Donald St. Clair Patterson – 87, of South Alton, Kings County, peacefully and gracefully passed away in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville on the 25th day of October 2007. Born in Kentville on the 21st day of October, 1920, he was a son of the late Charles and Glennie (Chase) Patterson. Don spent most of his life on his South Alton farm, his only time away from home being from 1942-1946, when as a veteran of the Second World War, he served as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. It was during those war years that he married Alice (Coleman) who remained his partner until her passing in 1994. Don was first and foremost a farmer, with a fierce respect and love for the land, but also worked as a carpenter, finishing off his working career with the Construction Engineering Section at 14 Wing Greenwood. Between the two professions, he regularly worked 14-16 hour days. Leisure time was a precious and rare commodity, but when it came, he enjoyed playing his harmonica or fiddle, cards, fishing, and, in the summer, family picnics at the ocean. Those who knew Don best will remember him for his wry sense of humour, his ability to tell a great yarn, his strong work ethic and the great respect he showed for his body, eating only the most healthy foods and following a regular early morning exercise regime. He will be greatly missed by his companion, Edna Forbes; his children, Gary (Nancy Harriman), South Alton; Roy, Toronto; Janet (Joe Binger), Whitehorse; his grandchildren, Charlie, John, Jeremy, Martin, Alan, Iris and Jamie. His family takes heart in knowing, however, that there will be a great celebration as he reunites with Alice; his parents, Charles and Glennie; siblings, Marjorie, Henry and Frances; daughter-in-law, Hsiu-Chuan; Air Force buddy and long time friend, Garth Mosher. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. A memorial service in celebration of his life was conducted by Reverend Archdeacon Lynn Uzans at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 28, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A reception followed in the funeral home. Following the reception, the interment took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. In lieu of flowers, you are invited to make a donation to the charity of your choice, or perform a random act of kindness. On-line inquiries may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com. A lover of nature and ‘natural ways’, she enjoyed many happy hours working in and around her home and in her garden.
