LOMBARD, Russell Henry – 87, born in Weymouth North, died Oct. 3, 2007 in the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Funeral was held in Bethel Baptist Church, Ashmore. Interment in parish cemetery.

Ellis Albert “Al” Ford – left us on February 4, 2007 while enjoying his much loved winter sojourn in Florida. Born in Wolfville, he was the son of the late Freda and Denton Ford. He is survived by his wife and soul mate, Beverly; daughters, Susan (Bruce) Dunham and Jennifer Ford; a sister, Ruth (Harold) Reeves; five grandchildren and five nieces and nephews. Al started his career in banking, which took him to Ontario and Quebec, but the Annapolis Valley drew him home. He later worked for Archibald Farms and Valley Hillcrest, from where he retired. He was a longtime member of the Masonic Order and was a member and Past Master of Kentville Masonic Lodge No. 58, where he twice served in the office of Master. Al’s life was not long, but he lived every day to the fullest with integrity, enthusiasm and joy. He loved life, people and animals. He saw only the best in everyone and his glass was always half full. His family and friends will miss him forever and when we sit at “Al’s Lookout” and watch the sun sink over the bay, as he so loved to do, we will feel his presence. There was no visitation by family request. To celebrate Al’s life, there was a combined Masonic and funeral service, followed by a reception, held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 6, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend David Ogilvie officiated. Burial took place in the Fox Hill Cemetery. Family flowers only by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Kings Hospice Foundation. Harry Edward Alders Jr. – 74, of Kentville, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Canaan, Kings County, he was a son of the late Harry and Blanche (Langille) Alders. He worked with Canada Post as a rural mail contractor and was self-employed in housing construction and as a licensed mechanic. He was devoted to his family and together with his late wife, enjoyed cottage life and road trips. In his younger years, he enjoyed working around the yard and fishing with family and friends. He is survived by a daughter, Susan (Brian) Gibbon, Upper Falmouth; two sons, Gary (DeAnna Zinck), Kentville and Robert “Bob” (Jacqui Brown), Glenmont, Kings County; a sister, Paulette Cuilliver, Keswick, Ontario; a brother, Garnett (Sherry Vaughan), Aldershot, Kings County; a sister-in-law, Alma Aalders, Kentville; three grandchildren, Rachel Alders and Heather and Sarah Gibbon; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife the former, Rita “Joan” Schofield; a brother, Douglas. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 6, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Wineva Lillian Porter – 77, of Lakeville, Kings County, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Waltham, Massachusetts, she was the eldest daughter of the late Robert and Wineva (Craig) Foote. Wineva was a family and community minded person who especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a founding member of the Lakeville Women’s Institute, where she was instrumental in coordinating major renovations to the Lakeville Community Centre. She held many offices with the Women’s Institute, including many years as President and was bestowed the honour of being named a Life Member. She was also a member and former secretary of the West Kings Women’s Institute and a member of the Farm Women’s Institute. Wineva was the recipient of a volunteer service award presented by the Lieutenant Governor for her door to door campaigning with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Red Cross. She had a love for flower arranging and together with Pam Petrie, she prepared the floral arrangements for a recent visit of the Royal Party to Canning, Kings County. Among many other hobbies and activities, she enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, including a weekly get together on Saturday’s at 8:00 p.m. She is survived by her husband, Eugene; three daughters, Judy Webber, Ottawa; Gail (Paul) Hatt, Lakeville; Kathy (John) Turner, Woodville, Kings County; two sons, Ray (Nancy), London, Ontario; Steven, Vancouver; a sister, Roberta (Reggie) Sawler, Lakeville; two brothers, Hartley (Sylvia), Kentville and Gardiner, Coldbrook, Kings County; 10 grandchildren, Megan, Tara, Angela, Vanessa, Heather, Aimee, Alana, Ashley, Jamie and Nick; two great grandchildren, Keaton and Nolan; nieces and nephews. In recognition of the Saturday night card game, visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, October 6, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The family encourages those that are part of the card playing group to still play and to dedicate the evening to Wineva. The funeral service followed by a reception was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 7, 2007 also in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Murray Shaw officiated. CHAMBERS, Jeanne M., 82—of Liverpool, formerly of Charleston, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Dykeland Nursing Home, Windsor, October 2, 2007. Born in New Glasgow, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Jean (Dick) Murray. Jeanne was a world war two veteran serving with the W.R.C.N.S. from 1944 to 1946. She was a computer operator and data processor for 18 years with Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited. She was a talented artist and, for 14 years, a cartoonist for the Liverpool Advance. She was a life member and first female president of Mersey Branch #38, Royal Canadian Legion, Liverpool. She was a dedicated member of Zion United Church, Liverpool, a long serving member of the choir and also served on the Board of Session. She was a board member and past president of the Queens Association for Supported Living and a member and past chairperson of the founding Privateer Days Committee. She was a recipient of the ‘Volunteer of the Year ‘Award, Queens County. Jeanne is survived by her loving family; daughter Jeanne Delany Chambers of Quebec; sons: William of Halifax; George (Laura) of Union Corner, Hants, Co. and Thomas (Holly) of Brooklyn, Queens Co; 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; brother Robert (Mavis) of Antigonish. She was predeceased by her husband William and infant daughter Kathleen. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool Funeral service was held Friday, October 5th, 2007 from Zion United Church, Liverpool. SMITH, Raymond A. - Age 87, Falmouth, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 3, 2007. Born in Windsor, Hants Co., on November 13, 1919, he was a son of Clifford Smith and Kathleen (Richardson) Smith. He was husband and best friend of the late Kathleen “Katie” Spidle, formerly of White Rock, Kings Co. In his early years, Raymond attended Windsor Academy. He was proud to serve his country during the Second World War, as a signal operator in Sig. Platoon, HQ. Coy, West Nova Scotia Regiment, serving overseas in the Italian Campaign. On his return to Windsor, he graduated from the Horological Division, Canadian Jeweler’s Institute in 1952. He was employed with John Evans Jewelry Store in Windsor, after which time Raymond had a long and successful career as co-proprietor of R.A. Smith Jewelers on Gerrish Street in Windsor with his wife, Katie, for 35 years. After his retirement, he enjoyed travelling with Katie and his lifelong friends, Garwin and Louise Smith. After the death of Louise, they continued their travels with the addition of Garwin’s daughter, Cathryn. Raymond never ceased to miss Katie, his wife and best friend of 54 years, to whom he was a devoted husband. Raymond will be dearly missed by many friends and acquaintances. He will long be remembered for his unique sense of humour and quick wit. He had fond memories from early childhood of living in the old Windsor Post Office where his dad was a caretaker after returning from service in the First World War. It was here that one of Raymond’s chores was to wind the old town clock, thus the beginning of his long fascination and career working with clocks. The family would like to extend a warm thank you to his devoted caregivers who made it possible for him to remain in his own home in his last years; as well as to Dr. Mark Kazimirski. Besides his parents and stepmother, Vonnie (Sanford) Smith, Raymond was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen “Katie” and brother, Gilbert Smith of Windsor. He is survived by sister-in-law, Haddie (Barker) Smith; nephew, Gary Smith and family of Windsor; niece, Heather (Smith) Fletcher and family of Windsor; as well as ‘special niece’, Dr. Cathryn Smith of Windsor and her husband, Dr. Howard Wightman and their children. Raymond was a member of the Canadian Jewelers Association and the Atlantic Provinces Jewelers Association. He was a former member of Windsor Lions Club and Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 9, Windsor. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where visitation was held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, October 5, and also where the Royal Canadian Legion conducted a tribute service at 7 p.m. Funeral service was held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 6, in Lohnes Funeral Service Chapel, with Rev. Jeffrey White officiating; burial followed in Centre Falmouth Cemetery. It is respectfully requested there be family flowers only, but anyone wishing to make a donation in Raymond’s memory may do so to a charity of one’s choice. HAZEN, Neta Bateman, 87, Norwalk Conn., died October 3, 2007 at the Honey Hill Care Centre In Norwalk. She was the wife of the late John M. Hazen. Neta was born on Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia, the daughter of the late John M. and Mary E. Brannen Bateman. She was a graduate of Stamford high School, Class of 1938 and retired from A.M.F in Springdale, Ct in 1983 where she worked in the Accounts Receivable Department. She was an active volunteer at R.S.V.P and was a member of the Norwalk-Wilton Chapter of A.A.A.P. Neta is survived by two daughters, Judith A. DeWitt and her husband John of Pennsylvania and Barbara L. Rotelli of Norwalk with whom she made her home, grandchildren Michael (Margaret) DeWitt, Arthur (Bonnie) Rotelli III, Jennifer (Jeffrey) Denker and 12 great grandchildren. Services and interment was private. The Magner Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Eileen Mary (Nicki Nickerson) Wells – LPN, GT, Commissioner of Oaths of Wellington Dyke Road, Port Williams, formerly of Kentville, passed away at peace and without pain due to undetermined causes on Thursday, October 4, 2007 at the Victoria General Hospital Site of the QE II Health Sciences Centre, Halifax in the arms of her ever loving husband Dr. Donald Otis Wells and with family at her bedside. Eileen was motivated during her entire life by a deep love and belief in God and a dedication to serve others in need. The daughter of Jean Creelman and Robert McDougall, she began life as Aileen Agnes McDougall on January 5, 1947, in Halifax. She spent part of her very early years in St. Joseph’s Orphanage. At the age of four, she was adopted by Sarah and Edward O’Toole of Halifax. A graduate of St. Patrick’s High School and the LPN course at Camp Hill Hospital, she began her lifetime of service in 1968 as a nurse in the surgical and urology units at the BFM Hospital in Kentville. Beginning in 1980 she took a different path and became a Social Worker for the Community of Kings County, with a very large caseload throughout the county. Her focus shifted slightly from the sick to the poor and the disabled. 1994 saw her enroll at Mount Saint Vincent University to study gerontology, from which she was very proud to graduate in 1997. Eileen then returned to her beloved profession of nursing, again with emphasis on the elderly and the disabled. She worked at the Veterans Memorial Building and Abby Lane Hospital at the QE II; Ocean View Manor in Eastern Passage; Wedgewood House in Kentville; Hants Community Hospital and the Valley Regional Hospital on the Surgery and Medical Floors. The driving force for Eileen was always her passion for those less fortunate than she. She would often act as an advocate for those who could not advocate for themselves. When Eileen believed in a cause, she would fight hard and relentlessly for what she believed to be right, even when the consequences caused her personal harm. She was always honest and straight forward. The constant volunteer, she was active on many boards and committees. Among others, she was a volunteer at the Flower Cart, New Minas, at Hope Cottage, Halifax, in the Alzheimer’s Unit, Veterans Memorial Hospital, QE II, as an advocate for seniors with spiritual, mental or physical disabilities, a member of the steering committee for establishing a Palliative Care Program in the Kentville area in the 1980s, assisted in establishing the first two safe houses for battered women in Kings County, a member of the executive committees for the Municipal Social Services Association for Kings and Western District and the Annapolis Valley Work Activity Centre for the Provincial and Federal Governments. She was a team leader for EMO, Province of Nova Scotia. She also served as Chair of the Central Kings Community Health Board, Chair of the Eastern Kings Community Health Board and Co-Chair of the Council of Chairs for the Community Health Boards of the Annapolis Valley District Health Authority. She was recently appointed by the Honorable Chris d’Entremont, Minister of Health, to the Board of the Annapolis Valley District Health Authority, with a term beginning October 1, 2007. She was predeceased by her mother, Jean Creelman and father, Robert McDougall; her adopted parents, Sarah and Edward O’Toole and sister, Barbara Graves. She is survived by her loving husband Don, daughter; Johanna Nickerson, Halifax; son James, (Tanya) Nickerson III, Woodville, Kings County; granddaughter of one month, Julia Nickerson; sisters, Joan (Robert) Norris of Lethbridge, Alberta; Catherine (William) Chambers of Dartmouth; Linda (Amedee) Martell of Louisdale; Sheila (Eric) Hennessy of Halifax; brothers Robert Mason and Father Terrence O’Toole, both of Halifax; step daughters, Dr. Valana (Dr. John Rutherford) Wells of Scottsdale, AZ; Vanessa Wells, J.D. of Palo Alto, CA; Vanita (Mark Della Maggiora) Wells of San Jose; stepsons, Dr. Eric (Evelyn) Wells of Oakland CA; Dr. Barrett (Dr. Kathy Pae) Wells, Glastonbury CT and Barton Wells of Palo Alto, CA and six other grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her and loved her, especially those lives she touched and who benefited from her extreme generosity. In the words of one of the doctors at the Valley Regional Hospital, we will …..”find solace in the memory of an extraordinary woman who had energy for life that was infectious to others.” Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, October 12, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 13, 2007 in St. John’s Anglican Church, Church Street, Port Williams. Burial took place in the church cemetery. QUIGLEY – Hadsel Gordon, MDCM - aged 94, Sandy Cove, Digby County, passed away at Yarmouth Regional Hospital, on Oct. 4, 2007 after a brief illness. Born in Halifax, he was the son of Gordon Nelson and Elsie Mae (Hutt) Quigley. Dr. Quigley descended from the “Foreign Protestants” who settled Lunenburg in 1753, and the New England Planters and United Empire Loyalists who settled in Annapolis-Digby in 1760 and 1783. He was a survivor of the Halifax Explosion in 1917. He grew up in Eastern Passage, and was selected to attend the Imperoyal School, later attending the Halifax Academy. He entered Dalhousie University graduating with a Diploma of Engineering in 1939. He then attended the Nova Scotia Technical College, where he earned degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. He was a 1942 graduate of Dalhousie Medical School, and a member of the Sigma Chi and Phi Chi fraternities. Dr. Quigley was a General Practitioner in Halifax for 42 years and did post graduate studies in Neurosurgery at McGill in 1950. He was instrumental in the establishment of the in-patient Polio Clinic at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax during the epidemic of the early 1950s. He practiced Anesthesiology, Obstetrics, and Surgery and served on the staff of the Halifax Infirmary, the Children’s Hospital and the Grace Maternity Hospital over the years. He also lectured at Dalhousie Medical School. He continued in general practice and made house calls throughout Halifax County as a member of Family Practice Associates until his retirement in 1984. Dr. and Mrs. Quigley then moved from Halifax to their summer home, Quigley’s Corner, in Sandy Cove, Digby County. Dr. Quigley had little time for leisure pursuits, but loved his sailboat ‘Brigadoon’ which he sailed out of the Bedford Basin Yacht Club. He was a proficient photographer, developing and printing his own photos, a master gardener, a happy baker of cream puffs, a voracious reader, and was delighted to share with all his extensive knowledge on a host of subjects. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Lila Gwendolyn (Morehouse) Quigley, son Richard (Noelle), Adelaide, Australia; daughters Carol (Anthony) Measham, Chevy Chase, Md; Karen (Peter) Smith, Kentville; Gwendolyn (Gary) Wilson, Halifax. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Michael Quigley, Gillian Quigley, Adelaide, Australia; Mark (Alisa) Measham, Halifax; Diana Measham (Ben Stocking), Hanoi, Vietnam; Toby Measham (Pardo Pannunzio), Montreal; Jeremy (Felicity) Measham, Charlottetown; Claire Smith, Halifax; Benjamin Smith, Kanazawa, Japan; Caroline Wilson, Rachael Wilson, and Jonathan Wilson, all of Halifax; and four great-grandchildren, Sam and Lila Stocking, Matteo Pannunzio, and Henry Hadsel Measham. AMERO, Catherine (Kay) Lennie (Deveau) – 79, Deep Brook, passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007 at the Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Weymouth, she was the daughter of John and Maime (Gaudet) Deveau. Throughout her lifetime, Kay not only worked very hard at a variety of jobs – she also volunteered much of her time to various organizations. Kay’s family legacy includes six children: Lucy of Centreville, Jerry; of Canim Lake, British Columbia, Corinna of Calgary, Alberta, the late Donna, Joseph of Bear River East, and Joann of Pembroke, Ontario; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Kay leaves behind companion and best friend Barry Baxter. Kay loved music and dancing and especially loved the ocean and Nova Scotia . During her final years Kay was always in good spirits. She was well liked at Mountain Lea Lodge and we will all miss her. A memorial service was held Oct. 10 from Kaulback, Funeral Home, Annapolis Royal. Pastor Herb Anderson officiating.
