September 23, 2007 to September 29, 2007 continued Lee Guastini, 80, of Plympton passed away Sept. 28 in Annapolis Community Health Center. He is survived by his brothers, Raymond of Ocala, Florida; Robert of Greene, Rhode Island; and seven nieces and nephews and their seven children. His wife, Eunice, passed away Aug. 27, 2005. A 28-year-resident of Nova Scotia, Lee was born Leno James Guastini in Pennsylvania, the second son of Aldo Guastini and Julia Pellegrine Guastini. Aldo, an Italian immigrant, was a coal miner who later made his living in the textile industry when the family moved to New Jersey. He eventually settled in Coventry, R.I., where the family and had their own lace mill. Like so many others of his generation, Lee quit high school when the Japanese entered the Second World War and joined the US Navy, serving in the Pacific. For a while he was stationed in Shanghai, China. Lee was very proud of his military service and very patriotic. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. After his years in the US Navy, Lee took a job in the maintenance department of New Milford Hospital in New Milford, Conn. New Milford is on the west side of the state bordering New York State. It was at the New Milford Hospital where he met his wife Eunice, who worked in the surgery department. Lee loved to hunt and fish and he was always talking hunting and fishing with the staff of the hospital. It was a doctor at the hospital who introduced Lee to Nova Scotia. He first came up to Nova Scotia on a hunting trip. He loved the area immediately. It was the perfect place for his favorite pastimes and not long after that he bought land in Plympton. He built a camp and would spend two weeks of vacation time in Nova Scotia. When he retired from the hospital, Lee moved immediately to Plympton and built a house here. The last 28 years he lived in the Digby area fishing, hunting and beachcombing and living the way he wanted. He was a jack-of-all-trades. He could do carpentry work, mechanical work, electrical work, plumbing and furnace work, and he was always there to help out a friend or neighbour with a project. Lee loved to go to town. He and Eunice would go to town twice a day most days, for breakfast or lunch or just for coffee. In later years, his routine was to go to Josie’s Restaurant everyday. On Sundays, it was House of Wong at 11 a.m. for a number 5 with the egg roll on the side in a box so he could give it to a friend working across the street. He was always around town and could be found fishing on the pier nearly daily. He lived the way he wanted. Most of all, he wanted to live and die in Nova Scotia.
