SINCLAIR (Levy), Karen, Jane – 50, passed away peacefully in Northwood Centre, Halifax on Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, with her husband Bill, sister Margo Nesbitt, and her brother-in-law Bobby at her side. Karen had been stricken with kidney failure a week earlier, and was fully aware that her final journey was beginning. Born in Digby, she was a daughter of Richard “Dick” and Donna (Hubley) Levy of Digby. She will be sadly missed by her husband, William “Bill” Sinclair, with whom she had just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Karen spent her first five months of life at Digby General Hospital. She had had several surgeries at the Children’s Hospital in Halifax and Shriner’s Hospital in Montreal. Karen began school at Ardmore in Halifax and returned to Digby in 1967 to finish her education. She graduated from Digby Regional High School in 1978. After graduation, she relocated to Park Haven in Halifax where she met her soul mate, Bill. They lived independently for a time in Dartmouth and later moved to their permanent home at Northwood. Karen was born with Cerebral Palsy and she had spent her life confined to a wheelchair, but that did not hinder her sheer determination to accomplish whatever she set her mind to. Karen was an active volunteer at Northwood, where she worked at bingo, and did errands for other residents. She regularly attended the residents’ council and was instrumental in organizing a young people’s group. She also made a presentation to the organizing board of the new Northwood facility to address the needs of younger adults. It was important to Karen to be a teaching tool for graduating students on placement, who were fortunate enough to meet her. Karen had overcome many, many medical adversities in her lifetime, including a near fatal experience in May 2006. Karen and Bill were members of the Salvation Army and were responsible for having one of the “red kettles” located at Northwood. Karen had many friends (staff and residents) in Northwood who all visited her in her final days. Special note must be made of the Hospice team (Pamela and Mary) and the interdenominational prayer chain that watched over Karen, which included Rev. Jim Anderson, Harvey Seasons, Captains of the Salvation Army, and several priests and ministers. She is survived by her beloved husband, Bill; parents, Dick and Donna Levy; sister, Margo (Robert) Nesbitt; nephew, Colton; nieces, Brooke and Madison; beloved aunt, Muriel Levy, Digby; aunt Flo (Barry) MacKnight, Halifax; cousins, Laura (Shawn) Lewis and family, Timberlea; Rick (Kristen) Hubley, Mount Uniacke; aunt Janice Street of Calgary; uncle David (Lois) Street, Cremona; cousins Michael (Judy), sons, Dave and John; and daughter Amy Street; Peter (Janice), son Curtis, and daughter Hannah Street, all of Calgary; Paul (Cindy) Street of Whistler; aunt Joanne (Mike) Mossman; cousins Rick and Scott, Saint John. Karen was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Chester and Ella Levy; maternal grandparents, Otto and Laura Hubley; her biological grandmother, Lola Geldhart; her brother, Peter in infancy; as well as uncles, Donald Levy and Dickie Hubley. Cremation has taken place under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Rd., Spryfield. A celebration of life service was held at Northwood Centre on Sept. 26, and a second service was held in Digby Baptist Church, on Sept. 28. The family has requested no flowers, in lieu; remembrances may be made to the Northwood Foundation for Pastoral or Hospice Care (451-8311), or to the charity of one’s choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family at: wfh2005@ns.sympatico.ca.
