The Valley Women’s Business Network presents Harvest Celebration of Small Business with Second City’s Newest Comedy Legend, Megan McDowell.
McDowell, who hails from Canning, was the winner of CBC’s Second City show, “The Next Comedy Legend.”
With her win, McDowell is now a member of the Second City Touring Company and will venture home to entertain at the Gaspereau Winery Barn Oct. 13 at 6:30 p.m.
The evening will also feature some of the Valley’s best for wine and food tasting. There will be a silent auction of goods and services and music by Steve Lee and the Jazz Generations.
Tickets are $10 at the door. Proceeds for bursaries awarded to NSCC-Kingstec women students in business programs and education for business women in the Annapolis Valley.
Dworkin to sing
October 13, Wolfville singer Susan Dworkin will be giving a concert at the Al Whittle Theatre at 8 p.m.
Also on the program are Jossee MacInnis on clarinet and Nicole Earl on piano.
Tickets are $18. A portion of the proceeds will go toward World Vision.
Open house
The Dukes of Kent will host an open house and guest night Oct. 16 at the New Minas Baptist Church.
Men of all ages who like to sing are invited to attend and learn about barbershop harmony. The singing will get underway at 7:15 p.m.

This weekend, The Rheostatic's Tim Vesely, Yukon singer Kim Barlow and Vancouver's Great Aunt Ida are making just one of two stops in Nova Scotia at the Union Street Café in Berwick.
The simplicity of Barlow’s down-to-earth vocals and folk instrumentation are embellished with glistening pop touches that linger in the ears. The band will play from Kim’s critically acclaimed new album, Champ.
The show starts at 9 p.m. Saturday and tickets are just $12.
Steven Bowers will be a special guest at the Open Mic Kitchen Party Friday. A highly entertaining performer with a powerful, versatile voice, Bowers has built a solid reputation as a gifted songwriter. His latest release, Tired Light, has earned him ECMA and Nova Scotia Music Award nominations for Songwriter of the Year, Pop/ Rock Album of year, and Producer of the Year (2003 and 2006). Originally from Newfoundland, Bowers lives in Halifax and is immersed in writing and producing his fourth full-length album. The music gets underway at 8 p.m.
Worldwide singing
In the spirit of a worldwide event Voices for Hospice, a group of community volunteers are presenting Memories: a Celebration in Voice Oct. 20 at the Al Whittle Theatre in Wolfville. Proceeds from this event will support the Valley Hospice Foundation.

Book sale and new library rally
In celebration of National Library Week, the Friends of the Kentville Public Library and the Annapolis Valley Regional Library invite the public to a book and new library rally Oct. 18 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Kentville fire hall.
Admission is free. Proceeds from the event will go toward the construction of the new library.

New book
Gaspereau Press has issued an invitation to the launch of The Stone Canoe: Two Lost Mi'kmaq Texts.
It has been translated by Elizabeth Paul, edited by Peter Sanger and illustrated by Alan Syliboy. Sanger and Syliboy will be on hand Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Vaughan Memorial Library, Acadia University.
