After a successful tour of western Canada last fall, critically acclaimed singer-songwriters, Ron Sexsmith and Jill Barber will reunite to perform eight shows throughout Atlantic Canada, including a performance Oct. 12 at the Astor Theatre in Liverpool.
Praised by the likes of Paul McCartney, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Radiohead, and Bono, Sexsmith has been making music for over 20 years. He first gained mainstream recognition for his 1997 release Other Songs for which he won the 1998 JUNO Award for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year. He went on to duet with Coldplay’s Chris Martin on the song “Gold In Them Hills” from 2002’s Cobblestone Runway and won the 2005 JUNO Award for Songwriter of the Year for his album Retriever.
Sexsmith’s latest release, Time Being recently garnered him two 2007 JUNO nominations for Songwriter of the Year and Adult Alternative Album of the Year. The collection of songs has strong yet gentle melodies and range in tone from sad to surreal, melancholy to magical. The Toronto Star said, “Ron Sexsmith has produced a body of quality work that’s unequalled in contemporary Canadian music in originality and musical daring.” CANOE.ca said, “…flawless tunes, carefully crafted and exquisitely produced, all in the name of examining mortality.”
Described by Kris Kristofferson as, "a real songwriter... a damn good songwriter," Barber is touring in support of her latest release, For All Time, which recently won her the 2007 East Coast Music Award for Factor Recording of the Year and Female Solo Recording of the Year. She also performed on CBC’s nationally televized Gala Awards Show.
For All Time’s 13 tracks strike a balance between classic and contemporary songwriting styles, further demonstrating Barber’s keen melodic sense and compelling lyrical abilities. The Toronto Star declared the album, “...a little masterpiece by a singer and composer with a breathtakingly pure voice and big future.” Edmonton’s Vue Weekly said, “For All Time stands out as a distinctly excellent contribution to Canada’s rich landscape of singer-songwriters.”
