KELLY (Haines), Karen Emma-Associate in Education, B.Ed., M.Ed., passed away peacefully in Windsor, on September 24, 2007, surrounded by the love of her family. The daughter of Kenneth and Olive Haines, Karen was born in Halifax, on June 15, 1956, when she became the younger sister to Bruce (Jeannie Phillips) and David (Linda Trefry) Haines. Her schooling was in Baddeck. In 1975, Karen entered Nova Scotia Teachers College, where she learned her craft as an educator. Karen taught in Labrador (North West River, Goose High) until 1984 when she began teaching at Hants West Rural High School (Science, Family Studies), West Hants Middle School (Science) and Avon View High (Agriculture, Science). Karen was a dedicated teacher, working with school administration and staff to develop NSDC ideas; with peers to develop school vision, discipline policy, curriculum co-ordination, teaching strategy in-services; and with students on Grade 9 Awareness Day, Peer Drug Education, as a French Club chaperone, on the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Star Lab, as a basketball coach and RCMP Restorative Justice Facilitator. More recently she was involved with Portfolio Development with colleges at NSCC, Nova Scotia Department of Education and with AVRSB, a consultant to Active Healthy Living. Karen will be very missed by her husband, Bernie; daughter, Laura; her Mom and Dad, her brothers and family and friends. Special thank you to doctors Bruce Colwell, Rhen Wholeness, Maureen Nolan, Janice Howse, Elwood Grandy, Cathryn Smith and your colleges for the knowledge, kindness and consideration shown to Karen. Sylvia Evelyn Roache – 76, of Kentville. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Sylvia, at the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville on Sunday, September 23, 2007. Born in Kingwell, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha (Stacey) Slade. Of her many accomplishments in life, Sylvia was most proud of her children and grandchildren. We will miss her strength, support and sense of humour; but most of all, her love, which was beyond what any words can express. She will be also greatly missed by her best friends, Holly Matthews, Ann (Niecey) Clarke and Eddie McNeil. She is survived by a daughter, Fay (James) MacNeil, Halifax; two sons, Michael (Debra) Roache, Kentville; John (Millie) Roache, Halifax; two grandchildren, Christopher and Nicole; four sisters, Laura Milley, Marcie Baker and Linda Rodway, all of Newfoundland; Ina McNally, Arizona; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Harvey; a daughter, Darlene Leslie. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, and at Sylvia’s request, there was no visitation or funeral service. A private family burial took place in the Lockeport Cemetery. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the nurses and staff of the Valley Regional Hospital – Medical Unit for their exceptional and loving care of Mom and our family during this difficult time. BOWER, Robert Augustus, 78, of Roseway Manor, formerly of Lower Ohio, passed away in Roseway Manor, Sandy Point, Shelburne Co., on Sunday, September 23, 2007. Born in Lower Ohio, he was the son of the late Robert Augustus and Allie May (Churchill) Bower. In his early years he worked with his father in the logging industry. He worked for J.C. Bower Cement Products for 20 years. He then worked for Gary Bower in Ohio Cement Products for 5 years, Harlow Construction for 15 years. He was caretaker and umpire at the Lower Ohio Ballfield for many years. He is survived by his wife, Leona, Lr. Ohio; sons, William “Buddy”, Lr. Ohio; Scott (Susan) Halifax; Sterling (Joanne), Lr. Ohio; daughter, Julie, Lr. J. Ruth MacPhail – 86, of Coldbrook, Kings County, passed away peacefully at home, Monday, September 24, 2007. Born in MacPherson’s Mills, Pictou County, she was a daughter of the late Alex and Lillian (Macleod) Urquhart. She was a homemaker and had been active in the community as well as selling Avon. She taught Sunday school in both Kingsport and Woodside and was a leader with Brownies in Woodside. Upon moving to the valley, she founded the Tom Thumb Bowling League in the fall of 1961 and was active in the league for many years, serving in various capacities, including president. She also enjoyed playing cards with family, friends and neighbours. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Harry Campbell “Cam” MacPhail; two daughters, Diane MacPhail, Eastern Passage; Camille “Kim” MacPhail (Dan Milsom), Spryfield; two sons, Gerald “Gerry” (Anne Marie), Dartmouth; Robert “Bobby” (Donna), Loon Lake, Kings County; eight grandchildren, Robbie, Michael, Jayne, Carla, Barbara, Alexandra, Elizabeth and Drew; a great granddaughter, Selena; many special nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Annie MacPhee and Betty Reid; five brothers, Jim, Bert, Charlie, Bob and Fraser. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, September 26, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 27, 2007. HARTLEY, Charles “Charlie” William, 66 of Shelburne passed away at Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point on Monday, September 24, 2007. Born in East Jordan, Shelb. Co., he was the son of the late Leaman and Annie (Brown) Hartley. Charlie started his working life as a boat builder at the MacKay Shipyard, he worked in the woods with Ralph Barclay, and operated heavy equipment with Burke Harris Construction. Charlie also drove Taxi for Bill Young, was an Auxiliary Police Officer for the Town of Lockeport, and also a School Bus driver for 25 years. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting. He was an avid collector of Model Cars and auto magazines. He loved all children, especially his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Cathy (Saunders) Shelburne; son, Jason (Danya Davis), Shelburne; daughters, Chastity (Jason) Enslow, Shelburne and Celsey at home; grandchildren Samantha Enslow, Alex Enslow, Jahnessa Hartley, Emma Enslow & Landen Enslow; brothers, Ritchie (Mary), Jordan Branch, Robert of Halifax, Lee (Colleen), Welshtown; sisters, Betty, (Robert) MacKay of Shelburne, Barbara, (Charles) Lyle of Shelburne, Sally, (Jim) D’Entremont, Sandy Point, as well as several nieces and nephews. KEDDY, Rodney Douglas “Doug” - 54, of Clarence, NS, passed away Monday, September 24, 2007 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Lester and Margaret Allalie (Gidney) Keddy. Doug was a self employed carpenter and loved carpentry. He was a member and leader for over 20 years with the Clarence 4-H Club where he taught woodworking and gardening. Doug loved hockey and played goalie for the Lawrencetown Hornets Hockey team and was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan. He loved hunting, fishing and gardening. Doug is survived by his wife, the former Grace Banks, Clarence; daughters, Christine (Kevin) Anderson; Rebecca (Charles Keddy), both of Berwick; son, Reigh, Clarence; sister, Wendy (George Pike), Pentz; brother, Randy (Barb), Pleasantville, Lunenburg, Co; grandchildren, Mackenzie and Alexander. POTHIER, Norbert – 80, Wedgeport, Yarmouth Co., passed away on Monday, September 24, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born March 28, 1927 in Wedgeport, he was a son of the late Jacques Abbe and Elodie Marthe Pothier. Due to a severe visual impairment, Norbert was confined at home for most of his adult life. He took interest in world events and genealogy. Surviving are a sister, Lorraine, Halifax; brothers, Vernon (Vina) and William, both of Halifax; his caregvivers, Jeanne and Brian Surette. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Loran, Gerald and Donald. Visitation took place from 2-4, 7-9 Wednesday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Wedgeport. The funeral mass was held at 11 AM, Thursday, September 27 from Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, Wedgeport, Father Wieslaw Papuga officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery.
