The Nova Scotia Government has made $250,000 available to successful applicants to help cash strapped volunteer fire departments buy expensive equipment such as pumps, hoses, extraction tools or defibulators. The fund will pay up to 60 per cent of the cost of equipment, excluding purchases of fire trucks. It will also help with construction upgrades at aging fire halls. Rural fire departments can access a new $5 million program to buy or replace aging equipment.

FIRE PREVENTION IN YOUR SLEEPING AREA

More than half of all fatal home fires happen while people are sleeping. You can save lives by installing smoke detectors and automatic sprinklers and by practicing family escape drills and remember this fire-safety rule: "Never smoke in bed or when you are drowsy."

Make your family escape plan - practice! Have two exits from each bedroom. Have everyone sleep with bedroom doors closed to protect against heat and smoke, giving time to escape the emergency.
