Comedy for museum

The Kings County Museum is delighted to present its second annual Night of Comedy Oct. 19. The inaugural event exceeded expectations and raised over $10,000.

A Night of Comedy II will now be the primary fundraising vehicle for the museum, which is owned and operated by the Kings Historical Society.

Featured are two great comedians. Steve Patterson was nominated as the Best

Male Stand-up Comic in Canada this year, as Scott Harris was in 2006. Both performers have worked in all of the entertainment mediums. Scott was most recently on CBC radio’s "Madly Off In All Directions" and Steve appeared on The Comedy Network. They have also both headlined at Just For Laughs Festival in Montréal and the Halifax Comedy Fest.

Emceeing this dynamic duo is Albert Howell, who has hosted his own show on The Comedy Network and just finished his first writing season for This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

The comedy night starts at 7 p.m. with a complimentary reception and silent auction, followed by A Night of Comedy II.

Presented by the Ritcey team at ScotiaMcLeod and produced by Make It Happen, event organizers are Bruce Mansour and Cathy Margeson.

Tickets are available now at the Acadia University box office at the arena. Tickets are $40 and $30 for students, plus applicable service charge if ordered by phone at 542-5500 or 1-800-542-8425.

Laugh with Ron

With his unique poetic style and performance-driven physicality, comedian Ron James catapults audiences everywhere into paroxysms of wheezing delight.

His newest special, East Coast Bound, filmed in Halifax, will air nationwide on CBC-TV Dec. 31. However, live is where his comedy sings the loudest.

Tickets are on sale for a double show Nov. 10 and 11 in Wolfville at the Festival Theatre. Box office phone is 542-5500. Reserved seating ranges between $40 to $42.50.

Hear the McDades

Kate Adams is recommending the McDades’ concert in Wolfville this week. She says the 2003 performance of this Celtic roots family band from Alberta became legendary at the Union Street Café. The popular Berwick restaurant has hosted hundreds of performers, but the McDades were something truly special.

In August, this same band came to the Lunenburg Folk Festival. “This is family of musical virtuosity. As performers they’re intuitive, engaging, exciting and mesmerizing. The McDades are high-energy entertainers, amazing to listen to and just flat-out fun to watch,” Adams says.

The McDades are coming back to Nova Scotia to be part of the Celtic Colours Festival in Cape Breton and will stop off in Wolfville. The concert takes place Thursday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. in the Al Whittle Theatre. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Advance tickets are available at the Just Us! Café in Wolfville or by phone using VISA/Mastercard/American Express.

Rescheduling

Fundy Film continues its Autumn Main Series with the rescheduled screening of Ten Canoes. It was winner of six categories at the 2006 Australian Film Institute Awards including Best Film, Best Direction and Best Cinematography.

Collaborating closely with the Ramingining Aboriginal community in Australia’s Northern Territory, the film is part ethnography, part anthropology and, above all, a rollicking good time. The humorous and mythical tale gives a clearer appreciation of a little-understood culture.

In Yolngu Matha and English with English subtitles, it will screen at the Al Whittle Theatre in Wolfville Oct. 7 at 4 and 7 p.m. and Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. For further information, see www.fundyfilm.ca or call (902) 542-5157. Tickets ($8) are available 30 minutes prior to the film.
