September 16, 2007 to September 22, 2007 PEACH, Rexford Conlon “Rex” - 90, Falmouth, Hants Co. It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather and brother on Sunday, September 16, 2007, in Windsor Elms Senior Citizens Home. Born September 19, 1916, in Hantsport, he was a son of the late W. Leslie and Bertha (Patterson) Peach. Rex was a Second World War veteran, serving with the navy. In his early years, along with his family, he operated a farm, also working with the Department of Agriculture as a Fruit and Vegetable Inspector until his retirement at the age of 65. He was a long-time volunteer at the Hants County Exhibition starting in 1932 at the age of 16. He became vice-president, director and chairman of the fruit and vegetable committee. Throughout his lifetime Rex received many awards for his volunteerism to agriculture such as “Showman - Farmer of the Year” in 1959 at the Hants County Exhibition, and also from his church. Other than his family, his other loves were gardening, woodworking and fishing. He was a fun loving, caring person who made people welcomed in his home. He will be remembered for his keen sense of humour, both sides of a practical joke and enjoying a good game of playing cards, and most of all, winning. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Nora (Graham); son, David (Elva), Falmouth; daughter, Dianne (Frank) Phillips, Sackville; grandchildren, Tammy (Marc) Blue, Sandra (Wayne Hopkins) Peach, David (Paula White) Peach, Shawn (Holly) Phillips, and Troy Phillips; great-grandchildren, Allison and Natalie, Chloe and Caleb, and Owen; also brother, George (Jean), and sister, Minnie Greeno. September 16, 2007 to September 22, 2007 CHIPMAN, (Richard) Peter - 71, of Shelburne died unexpectedly at home on Monday, September 17 of a heart attack. Born in Kenora Ontario on May 23 1936, he was the son of the late Robert and Natalie Chipman. He is survived by brother Robert (Bob), and sister Marilyn, both of Winnipeg. Another sister, Diane Hookway, of Parksville British Columbia, predeceased him. Sporting knobby knees and white shorts, this 5-foot 9-inch, balding and bearded man was a familiar sight in Shelburne’s historic waterfront district, where he lived for many years. Keeping fit by power-walking up and down the waterfront lanes, he had just resumed his autumn regime of over six miles a day in the weeks before his passing. Joining the Royal Canadian Navy at age 17 in September of 1953, Peter served five years on Canada’s West Coast. Reenlisting in January of 1962, he was posted to the East Coast where he served as a Sonarman on various naval vessels. He also completed a number of tours of duty at the SOSUS submarine listening station HMCS/CFS Shelburne. He had the distinction of being the first Canadian Sonarman to detect the USS Nautilus, the first operational American nuclear attack submarine. HMCS Algonquin was his last Canadian ship. His final sea posting was in 1976 onboard the Royal Yacht Britannia. He retired from the navy in January of 1979, returning to Winnipeg, where he grew up, for about a year to work with the Canadian Red Cross doing disaster control. But the lure of Nova Scotia’s “sunny South Shore” was too strong, pulling him back in 1980 to his beloved Shelburne, where he spent his remaining years. It was during his tours of duty at CFS Shelburne in the 1960s that Peter developed his interest in the theatre. He joined the Schooner Players amateur theatre group in Shelburne in the mid-60s, playing a major role, either as an actor or backstage, in every Schooner Players production from then until 1989, when Schooner Players staged its final production. He was also a member of Shelburne’s Dancing Beggars theatre group. He and long-time friend David Ott of Sandy Point toured elementary schools throughout the Maritimes with their show, David and the Wizard of Tales. For a number of years this talented duo was the leading act touring Maritime schools. They also had an adult-oriented show, Barebones Theatre. Educated by Jesuits, Peter carried the marks of both their intellectual discipline and their severity. Although a former naval officer, he did not glorify war; he was a sharp critic of what he viewed as American military excesses. He had an avid interest in weather forecasting, and always knew about approaching storms and the latest long-range and seasonal forecasts. Peter was both a curmudgeon and a dedicated caregiver. He did not suffer fools gladly, and few of his friends completely escaped his censure. As a volunteer caregiver, in his later years, Peter ran errands and provided comfort to several fatally-ill residents through until their final days. Among them was the late Peter Oliver of Shelburne, a fellow thespian, who ironically outlived Chipman, as these twin towers of theatre in Shelburne passed away on successive days in September. Chipman (as he was known to his friends) was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and did many personal favours for seniors in addition to his regular rounds. Although sometimes thought of as a recluse, he had many friends. He loved his four cats and let them roam free. Cremation has taken place, no service by his request. A wake is planned, date to be announced. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army or the Beulah Burman Society for animal welfare.

September 16, 2007 to September 22, 2007 WILKINS, Harold Archibald (Bear) - 73, of Sandy Cove, Digby County, was called home to be with his Lord on September 17 at Digby General Hospital after a long illness. Born in Digby on January 5, 1934, he was the son of the late Elton and Agnes (Dennison) Wilkins. He was one of the founding members of Digby United Pentecostal Church and remained active in the church until his health prevented him from attending. During his lifetime, Harold worked at the Pines, the Cornwallis Café (House of Wong), and spent many years digging clams with his uncle Anciel. Harold loved working outdoors and could be seen pushing his lawnmowers and whippers all over Digby, doing yard work as well as odd jobs for his many customers. Harold was a prayer warrior. His family, his church, its members, his pastor, and his friends as well as anyone needing special prayer were remembered during his prayer times each day. He supported his church and the ministry in every way that he could. Many people will remember Harold, especially in the summer, going through containers throughout Digby looking for bottles, and then giving the money he earned to Foreign Missions through his church. He was a wonderful and devoted husband, father, grandfather and a friend to so many people, not just in Digby, but all over the area and beyond. He always had time to help or visit with a friend, sometimes walking miles to reach them. He will be remembered for his love of gospel music as well as his wonderful harmonica playing ability. In his earlier years people knew he was coming long before they saw him because they could hear him playing his harmonica as he walked along the streets of Digby. He could always be counted on to play his harmonica in church, and he would often play for residents of seniors’ homes in town as well as Tideview Terrace. After his marriage, he and his wife traveled all over the eastern United States, the South Shore and much of P.E.I. and New Brunswick, and he enjoyed telling people about his trips. He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Genie; daughter, Louise (John) Harvey, Nictaux; son, Ronnie, Digby; stepchildren, Cindy (Dan) Smith, Windsor Locks, Conn.; and Scott (Tonya) Langhorne, Hunterville, N.C.; three grandchildren: Lisa (Mike) Sabean, Middleton; Tammie (Andrew) Phillips, Gillett, Pa.; and David Harvey, Middleton; six step-grandchildren, Kyle, Matthew, Nikolas and Geoffrey Smith, Connecticutt; and Madisyn and Aaron Langhorne, North Carolina; and four great-grandchildren, Corey, Aaron, Rachel and Andrew. Funeral was held Sept. 21 in Jayne’s Funeral Home, Digby, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, Digby. Donations in Harold’s memory may be made to Digby United Pentecostal Church or a charity of the donor’s choice. “Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”—II Corinthians 5:17
