September 9, 2007 to September 15, 2007 continued ATKINS, Deborah Anne - Yarmouth Nova Scotia, (also a resident of Calgary Alberta), passed away on September 12, 2007 at the age of 50. Deborah was born on August 14, 1957 in Kentville N.S to the late William Melford and Cecilia Marie (Thibodeau) Atkins. Deb is survived by her brothers and sisters, Carol (Eric) Pinch, South Ohio; Monique (John) Hennessy, Cape Breton; Thomas Atkins, Hebron; Bernie (Wendy) Atkins, Mount Uniacke; Wendy (Norman) Deveau, Dayton; her children Angel (Dana) MacLeod, Gardner’s Mill; Tammie (Peter) Parker, Calgary and Daniel Doucette, Calgary. Deb was also a devoted Grandmother to 6 grandchildren: Cailey, Samwise, Fiona, Lorien, Cirdan and Quinn. Deb was a loving sister, a passionate mother and a really great friend. Visitation will be held at Huskilson’s Funeral Home on Thursday September 20th from 7:00-8:00 p.m., followed by a celebration of her life to be held in the home of Richard and Rosemary Pothier at 1 Sycamore Street, Yarmouth. Interment will take place on the following morning at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery in Yarmouth with Father John MacPherson officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. September 9, 2007 to September 15, 2007 continued Colin Elson MacGowan – 94, formerly of New Minas, passed away Saturday, September 15, 2007 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Veteran’s Memorial Building, Halifax. Born in Hillaton, Kings County, he was a son of the late Burpee and Alberta (MacLeod) MacGowan. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in Scotland as an aircraft mechanic from 1943-1945 with the 408 “Goose” Squadron. He was the proprietor of C. E. MacGowan Garage, Hillaton and a partner in both Saxon Sales Farm Machinery and Mailmac Motors, who were dealers for Austin, Dodge and Volvo. He later became sole proprietor of Valley Motors, one of Nova Scotia’s first few appointed Volvo dealers. He was a member and past master of Scotia Masonic Lodge No. 28, Canning and a member of the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville. He is survived by a granddaughter, Janis (Greg) Stauffer, Edmonton, Alberta; a grandson, Ian (Deanne) Hancock, Abbotsford, British Columbia; a niece, Judy (Gates) Cohoon, Wolfville; a nephew, Paul (Ann) Gates, New Minas; a brother-in-law, Harold Gates, Canning; two grandnephews, Christopher Cohoon, New York; Jarred Gates, Halifax. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Joyce McConnell; his second wife, the former Florence (Gates) (Armstrong) (Taylor); a daughter, Susan (MacGowan) Hancock; a son-in-law, Dr. Donald Hancock; a sister, Madalyn (MacGowan) Gates. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Monday, September 17, 2007 with a Royal Canadian Legion service held at 7:00 p.m. and a Masonic service held at 8:00 p.m. all in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2007 in the First Cornwallis Baptist Church, Canard, Reverend Peter Lohnes officiated. September 9, 2007 to September 15, 2007 continued KNOWLES, Ethel Ruth - 87, Avondale, Hants Co., passed away Sunday, September 9, 2007, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, after a very brave fight with cancer. She had been lovingly attended throughout her illness and stay in the hospital by her family. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Ethel May (Keating) Austen. She was very active in her community as a member of numerous groups and organizations. As a long-time member of Avondale United Church she participated in UCW, teaching Sunday school, and attended many Maritime Conferences, and was a member of the Valley Presbytery of the United Church of Canada. She was active with the Victory Credit Union, as secretary for many years, as well as president of Newport Landing Cemetery Corporation, Avondale. She was always involved in her children’s education through Home and School membership and leadership. She enjoyed traveling and had a special place in her heart for Cape Breton. She delighted in hearing about her children’s and grandchildren’s exploits. Her strong and beautiful voice was enjoyed by all who heard her sing. She participated musically in many choirs and often played the organ at home and church. Ruth is survived by her husband of 61 years, Gordon C. Knowles; daughter, Margy Knowles-Fletcher, Poplar Grove; son, Austen Michael (Ann), Poplar Grove; grandchildren, Jackie, Larry, Tammie, Danny, Raeanne, Keri (Simon), Calvin (Marlaina), Jessica (Rob), Andy (Alisha), and Katie; son-in-law, Gordon Bezanson, Kentville; sisters-in-law, Molly Austen, Halifax; Ethel McInnes, Summerland, B.C.; Libbie Knowles, Windsor; also several nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by daughter, Judie Bezanson; granddaughter, Becky Lynne Fletcher; brother, Kenneth Austen. Thanks are extended to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit of Hants Community Hospital for their care and kindness throughout Ruth’s illness. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). There was no visitation by request. Funeral service was held 4 p.m. Wednesday, September 12, in Avondale United Church, Rev. Shelley Pick and Rev. Bill Gibson officiating. September 9, 2007 to September 15, 2007 continued ANTHONY, Pearl A.S. — 78, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully September 13, 2007 at home. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Simon Edward and Sybil Edna (Young) Dorey. Pearl enjoyed looking after children especially her grandchildren and she enjoyed music, playing the guitar and sing songs. Pearl was an avid gardener and loved to play bingo, cards, paint and her occasional trips to the casino. She is survived by her husband Allison; daughter Joanne (Philip) Young of Halifax; son Tony (Janet) of Halifax; sisters, Billie and Florence Foster both of Liverpool; brothers: Vernon (Maxine) of Shelburne, Robert (Bernice), Arthur (Terry) and Gus (Ethel), all of Liverpool; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Victor. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool where a funeral service was held Monday, September 17, 2007. September 9, 2007 to September 15, 2007 continued FITZGERALD, Lloyd Frank - 77, Melbourne, Yarmouth Co. It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Lloyd Fitzgerald on September 13, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born February 21, 1930, in Little River Harbour, Yarmouth Co., he was a son of the late Ralph and Cedulie (Harris) Fitzgerald. Lloyd was a well-known barber in the town of Yarmouth for the past 52 years. He also worked several years as a painter for J.J. Saulnier & Son, and earlier, worked in the apple industry, picking apples in the state of Maine, U.S.A., and in Nova Scotia. Lloyd was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, and at one time, was involved with the Bluenose Twirlers. He loved gardening, whittling, woodworking, and was a great storyteller. He enjoyed his time spent with the Breakfast Club and Cabin Crew. He was a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be sadly missed by family, friends, and numerous customers. Lloyd is survived by wife, Yvonne (Muise); sons, Larry (Sandra), Alvin (Amelia); daughter, Dianne (Ron) Trenholm; brothers, Joseph (Mary), James (Marion), Burton (Ida), Clarence (Marion), Paul (Joan), Arthur, Carl, Louis, David (Vicky), Bernie (Myrna), and Cecil; sisters, Catherine (Carroll) Saulnier, Lillian MacAskill, and Barbara (Richard) Muise; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Lloyd was predeceased by brothers, Willard, Arthur, and Delmar; brother-in-law, Earl MacAskill. Visitation took place Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, with prayers at 8 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services took place Monday, September 17, at 10 a.m. in St. Ambrose Cathedral, Father John MacPherson officiated. Burial took place in Melbourne Cemetery. Reception followed the graveside committal in Melbourne Community Centre. September 9, 2007 to September 15, 2007 continued KENNEDY, Malcolm Marshall “Mac” - 87, Hantsport, Hants Co., passed away peacefully Friday, September 14, 2007, at home. Born in Wallbrook, Kings Co., he was a son of the late Thomas and Bessie (Prescott) Kennedy. Mac was a veteran of the Second World War, having served with the Royal Canadian Army Services Corps in England, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was a member of St. James United Church and he was a former heavy equipment operator and mechanic for Butler Brothers and Fundy Gypsum Company. Mac was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by daughter, Glenna (Larry) Giffin, Amherst; son, Gregg (Cheryl) Ottawa; stepsons, Leslie (Betty Ann) Beazley, Windsor; Richard (Grace) Beazley, Halifax; Wayne (Cindy) Beazley, Bridgewater; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Mary E. (Benedict) Beazley (February 2005); sisters, Orpha, Ruby, Muriel and Jennie; brothers, James, Jasper, Frank, Robert and John. Florence – 94, Villa Saint Joseph-du-Lac, Dayton, Yarmouth Co., passed away peacefully on Friday, September 14, 2007, in the villa. Born September 18, 1912 in Wedgeport, she was a daughter of the late Arthemis and Martha (Cottreau) Surette. In her younger years, she worked with Harris’ Seafood restaurant in Yarmouth, and then became a homemaker. Florence was active in the former Notre Dame parish (Yarmouth), and she enjoyed sewing and playing bingo. Surviving are her children, Patsy (Fergus) McDonald, Tony Bourque, both of Sand Beach; Jerry (Nancy) Bourque, Calgary, Alta.; Bill Bourque, Sand Beach; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; a sister, Evangeline “Vangie” Deveau, Yarmouth. Besides her parents she was predeceased by three husbands, Joseph Bourque, Maurice LeBlanc and Edmond Pothier, as well as a sister, Hazel Bullimore (England). Visitation took place from 2-4 and 7-9 Monday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 10 AM, Tuesday, September 18 from Saint Ambrose Cathedral, Albert Street, Yarmouth, Father John MacPherson officiated. Interment followed in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Yarmouth. September 9, 2007 to September 15, 2007 continued Muise, Bernard Louis - Born in East Quinan, NS, 1936, Bernard, at his home in Grimsby, Ont., surrounded by the love and care of his family, and in his 72nd year went gently home to God on Friday, September 14, 2007. Cherished husband and best friend of Patricia (Kemp), Bernie will also be missed by his much loved children Jo-Anne Lawless, Kate Muise, Bernard and Laura Muise, Michelle and Mark LeMessurier and his beloved grandchildren Monique Muise, Matthew, Eric, Evan and Naomi Lawless, and Luke and Jake LeMessurier. Predeceased by his parents Abel and Cecile (LeFebvre) Muise; his siblings and their spouses Jeanette and Charles Doucette, Pauline and Raymond Surette, Walter Muise and Delbert Muise; his mother-in-law Rose Marie Kemp, and brother-in-law Jack Kemp. Bernie is survived by his brothers Edward Muise, Hector (Marguerite) Muise; sisters Bernadette Muise, Anne-Marie (Robert) Frotten and sisters-in-law, Albertine Muise Joyce and Ella Muise. He will also be fondly remembered by his father-in-law Jack Kemp, Patricia’s siblings and their spouses, his many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Grimsby, ON, Wednesday, September 19th, 2007, with interment at Mountview Gardens, Stoney Creek, Ont. If desired, donations to the Catholic Children’s Aid Society, Hamilton, Ont., the Suzanne Kemp Henderson Cancer Research or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by his family.
