September 9, 2007 to September 15, 2007 HARTLEN, Thomas E., “Mickey”—87, of Stonehaven Lodge, Port Mouton, formerly of Milton, Queens County, passed away peacefully, Monday, September 10, 2007 in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool after a brief battle with pneumonia surrounded by his family in the final hours. Born May 28, 1920, in Milton, he was a son of the late Starratt and Helen (Legge) Hartlen. Mickey worked for Bowater Mersey for over 30 years in various positions, his last being as a train engineer. An avid sportsman, he excelled at baseball in his younger years and for most of his life was most happy when fishing the various lakes and rivers of the South Shore. Always an active outdoorsman, he enjoyed such varied hobbies as log rolling, bowling, horseshoes, canoeing, hunting and as a woods guide. He was one of the founding members of the Milton Canoe and Camera Club. He was also a member of the Milton Christian Church. Even in his last years, Mickey will be fondly remembered as that man seen sitting in the lawn chair in his canoe fly-fishing on the Mersey. He is survived by daughters: Cheryl (Christopher) Mansfield of Milton, Bonnie Muise, of Liverpool, and Peggy Zwicker (Charles Hunt) of Greenfield; grandchildren: Andrew of Dartmouth, Jason of Alberta, Vienna of Mexico, John of Alberta and Justin of Milton; four great grandsons and a great grand daughter; sister Fern of Vancouver. He was predeceased by his wife of 34 years, the former Dorothy Gilbert; sister Thora Huskins and Dorothy and brothers Sinclair “Duffy” and Forrest “Foggy”. Funeral service was held Sunday, September 16th, 2007 in Milton Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. Rev. Jennifer Garbin officiated. Burial was in Milton Community Cemetery. September 9, 2007 to September 15, 2007 Olive Minnie McKinnon – 79, of Port Williams, passed away Monday, September 10, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Bristol, Connecticut, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Gertrude (Leedham) Murphy. She was a member of the Port Williams Baptist Church where she had been a life-member of the Loyal Workers. She was a former member of the Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Port Williams Fire Fighters Auxiliary. Olive was also a member of the Senior Citizens of Port Williams. She is survived by seven daughters, Joan (Garth) Steele, Judy (John) Sawler, Susan MacIntosh, Jocelyn (Colin) MacKenzie, Linda and Patti (Alastair) MacLean, all of Port Williams; Nancy Morine, Coldbrook; one son, Robert, Port Williams; two brothers, Robert Murphy, Bridgewater; George (Paula) Murphy, Calgary; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three nieces and two nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Bruce McKinnon. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 13, 2007 in the Port Williams Baptist Church, Reverend David Ogilvie officiated. Interment was held in the Canard (Jaw Bone) Corner Cemetery. September 9, 2007 to September 15, 2007 Kenneth Avory “Benji” Benjamin – 63, of Cobourg, Ontario, formerly of Wolfville, Kings County, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 in the Kingston General Hospital, Ontario. Born in Greenfield, Kings County, he was a son of Margaret (Brown) (Benjamin) Whiston, Truro and the late Burton Benjamin. He had been employed as a truck driver with J & F Waste Management in Ajax, Ontario for many years and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, the former Helen Perez; a daughter, Kristine Benjamin, Halifax; a son, Bryan (Margaret), Halifax; a sister, Nellie Arnburg (Ray O’Donnell), New Minas; three brothers, Charles (Barb Rafuse), Kentville; Albert (Elizabeth), South Alton, Kings County; Clayton (Myrna), Truro; two grandchildren, Morgan and Bryce; several nieces and nephews and step-brothers and sisters. Visitation was held at 12:00 noon until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 17, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Pastor Thelma McLeod officiated. A reception was held in the funeral home reception room. Burial will take place at a later date in the Greenfield Cemetery. September 9, 2007 to September 15, 2007 BOLAND, James Roger “Jimmy”—61, of Bangs Falls, Queens County, passed away peacefully September 11, 2007 at South Shore Regional Hospital. Born March 17th, 1946, in Caledonia, he was the son of Harley Gordon and Mary Marie (Sutherland) Boland. For many years he was employed as a welder at Stenpro and Bowater Mersey Paper Company in Liverpool. Then later as a bus driver for the Bridgewater Community College. Jimmy loved the outdoors, wildlife, hunting, fishing and woodworking, but most of all his family. He is survived by his loving wife Linda (Uhlman) Boland; two daughters, Sherri Young (Rudy Hebrang) of London, Ontario, and Nicole (John) Cross of Wilmot, Nova Scotia; six grandchildren, Danielle, William, Christopher, Ryan, Lyndsay and Lauren and sister Virginia (Peter) Stafford of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in Maple Grove Cemetery, Chelsea. Rev. September 9, 2007 to September 15, 2007 DEMMONS, Edith "Niel"—86, of Maitland Bridge, passed away peacefully in her sleep September 11, 2007, at North Queens Nursing Home, Caledonia. Born in Maitland Bridge October 22nd, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Doris (Lohnes) Christensen. Niel was a lifelong active member of St. Paul's United Church, Maitland Bridge, and the UCW, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and enjoyed helping with all community events. In addition to raising and caring for her family, (and preparing delicious meals!) she enjoyed knitting and quilting, having made or helped to make over 100 quilts in her lifetime. For over 30 years she assisted her husband, Alton, in the operation of Demmons General Store and Post Office. Her infectious laughter and helping spirit endeared her to all who knew her. She thoroughly enjoyed swimming, and traveling, whether to Liverpool or Bridgewater with a friend, to the US or Canada with Alton to visit family, to Denmark to visit the home of her ancestors, or to the Holy Land to visit the "home" of her faith in her Lord. She is survived by son George, of Maitland Bridge; son Peter (Paulette), of Pembroke, Ont; and grandson Tim (Kelly) and great-grandchildren Myles and Katie of Pembroke, Ont; grandson Michael (Emilie) of Verona, Ont; son Carl (Susan), and grandchildren Tracy, Jillian, and Mark of Dartmouth; and sister Mary Helen Dodge of Middleton. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Percy “Alton”; brothers Allison and Dirck; sister Shirley Fancy. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chandlers' Funeral Home, Liverpool. Funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007 from St. Paul's United Church, Maitland Bridge, Pastor Tom Watson officiated. September 9, 2007 to September 15, 2007 POTHIER, Stephen Joseph – 51, Sluice Point, Yarmouth Co., passed away suddenly on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 in the New Halifax Infirmary, with his family by his side. Born April 7, 1956, he was a son of the late L. Donald and Phyllis (Muise) Pothier. He worked with the Parts Department at Tusket Sales and Service, enjoying every day of his 22 year career with Ford. He enjoyed hunting and going to the camp with the boys, but his true passion was his family. Surviving are his wife of 26 years, Sylvia T. (d’Eon) Pothier, whom he met and fell in love with back in 1973, and their daughter, Anja, who could always count on her loving dad for a drive anywhere she needed to go. Stephen also leaves to mourn his brothers and sisters, Donnie (Ellen) Pothier, Sluice Point; Gail (Alan) Creaser, Halifax; Pamela (Joseph) Muise, Sluice Point; Cynthia (Steven) Pothier, Mississauga, Ont. Visitation took place from 7-9 Thursday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 10:30 AM, Friday, September 14 from Holy Family Catholic Church, Amirault’s Hill, Father Maurice LeBlanc officiated. Interment took place in the parish cemetery. Born in Clarence, NS, she was a daughter of the late Eldon and Winnifred (Elliott) Marshall. She was a charter member of Annaval Chapter #31 Order of Eastern Star. Marguerite taught school in a one room schoolhouse, was employed with Maritime Telephone & Telegraph, and along with her husband, Murray, they kept books for several businesses in the area. They also operated a poultry farm selling eggs in Wilmot. She is survived by her sons, Ron, Wilmot; John (Irene), Victoria, BC; brother, Reg Marshall, Halifax; grandchildren, Kirk (Karen) Dodge and Brien Dodge, both of Wilmot; Leroy Dodge, Montreal, David Dodge, Vancouver and Carol Ann Dodge, Victoria, BC; great grandchildren, Stacey Dodge (Matt Asbury), Cold Lake, AB; Kimberly Dodge (Alan Bent), Middleton; Dana Dodge (Sarah Young) and Trevor Dodge, both of Halifax and great great granddaughter, Trinity Asbury, Cold Lake, AB. She was predeceased by her husband, Murray; brother, Ernest, sisters, Belle and Louise. Visitation was held Sunday, September 16, 2007, with Annaval Chapter #31 Order of Eastern Star service in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street (902) 825-3448 where the funeral service was held Monday, September 17, 2007. Rev. Glen Kent, officiated. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Middleton. Donations in memory may be made to a Charity of Choice.
