September 2, 2007 to September 8, 2007 HARTLEY, Max Wayne - Retired sergeant with the Halifax Police Force, passed away in the VG Site, QEII, on Sunday, September 2, 2007, from mesothelioma, a cancer caused by asbestos. Max joined the Halifax Police Department in 1969 and rose to the rank of sergeant by 1993, before retiring from the Halifax Regional Police in 1999. During his career he worked in patrol, criminal investigation and special enforcement. Max was co-recipient of a police commendation for saving two children in a house fire. In 1998, he was recognized by the Halifax Regional Police as the first African Nova Scotian to be promoted in rank in the province's regional police services. Since 1993, he was a Racial Sensitivity Instructor providing the first ever racial sensitivity training to the executive management of the Halifax Police Department. Max lectured several times as an invited speaker on issues concerning the police, Black communities and black history to the Halifax Regional Police second recruit class (1998), to officers throughout Canada and at the Canadian Police College in Ottawa. Max was a member of the Visible Minority Recruiting Committee responsible for the hiring of the first visible minority policy recruit class (1993) and facilitated appointment of the first Black honorary police inspector, Chaplain Lionel Moriah, to the Halifax Regional Police. Max is survived by his wife of 29 years, Jackie (Downie) Hartley, and his daughters, Patricia and Joanne Hartley, all of Halifax. Born in Shelburne on February 16, 1948, Max was the youngest son of 10 children born to Ida Belle Hartley. Max leaves behind sisters, Joyce (Seldon) Bruce, Lorraine (Edward Jacklyn, deceased) Hartley, Julianne (Lawrence) Bruce, all of Shelburne, and was predeceased by his sister, Alberta (Hartley) Price, formerly of Ottawa, Ont. He is also survived by brothers, Lloyd (Eva) Hartley and Raymond (Aggie) Hartley, both of Sudbury, Ont.; Edward (June) Hartley, Shelburne; Lawrence (Charlotte) Hartley, Riverview, N.B. He was predeceased by brother, Wilfred (Jean) Hartley, formerly of Sussex, England. He also leaves behind sister and brother-in-law, Linda (Downie) Mason and Bill Mason of Lunenburg County and their family. Max is also survived by his best friend and cousin, James Hartley, as well as numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Max was happiest when his home was filled with relatives and friends. During his retirement he enjoyed the companionship of many retired police officers and he looked forward to his coffee times with former colleagues. Max took great joy and spent countless hours renovating his home and working in his garden with Jackie by his side. Max loved life, his family and his friends - and everyone knew it. He was known for his sense of humour, his mighty laugh, his big hellos and huge hugs. He is loved immensely and he will be missed. The funeral service was celebrated Thursday, September 6, in Birch Cove Baptist Church, Donaldson Street, Rockingham, Pastor John Wilton, Father Lloyd O'Neil and Pastor Lionel Moriah officiated. The family has requested that donations be made in Max's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.
September 2, 2007 to September 8, 2007 GRAHAM, Florence Mary “Flossie” - 88, Windsor, Hants Co., passed away Sunday, September 2, 2007, in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born February 2, 1919, in Birkshire, England, she was a daughter of the late Joel and Florence (Aldridge) White. As a young woman Flossie played hockey on a girls hockey team in Windsor and loved to skate. She was very active and a long-time member of St. John Ambulance, and always looked forward to working at the First Aid Post at the Hants County Exhibition. Flossie was a well-known employee of the Stedman Store in Windsor, where she worked for 28 years. Flossie was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her only son, Edward and daughter-in-law, Faye, Kentville; grandsons, Randy and Robbie (Jennifer); great-grandsons, Andrew, Hunter, and Brandon; and sister, Grace (Fred) Jackson, Dartmouth. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Edward “Ned”, in June 2007; brothers, Willie and Joel “Scott” White. The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to all the RN’s, PCW’s, and CCA’s at Dykeland Lodge for their care, kindness and compassion given to Flossie and her family. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). There was no visitation by request. A memorial service was held 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 5, in Lohnes Funeral Service Chapel, Chaplain Debra Mosher officiated. Private family interment was held in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor. September 2, 2007 to September 8, 2007 Fitzgerald, Joseph Horace “Joe”, 50, of St. Croix, Hants County, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2007 at home. Born in Wolfville, he was the son of the late Francis & Viola (Parker) Fitzgerald. Joe worked as a carpenter for several years. Joe was involved in a lot of sports and enjoyed playing crib & other card games. He was a wonderful husband, loving brother & friend and will be missed by all. Surviving are his loving wife the former Kathy (Holm) Fitzgerald; son, Joey Spencer, Medicine Hat, Alberta; step-son, Larry Pulsifer, Coldbrook; step-daughters, Angel Holm, Ohio; Auberta Prehoda, Ohio; step-grandchildren, Shianne, Ian, Allison Prehoda, Brothers, Blaine (Diane), Ardoise; Glen (Linda), Three Mile Plains; Bruce (Denise), Hantsport; Jim (Susan), Dartmouth; Bob (Carole), Moncton; Sisters, Faye Canning, Gays River; Rita Rockwell, Brooklyn; Sherral (Bill) Bowman, Garlands Crossing; Debbie (Reid) Swinamer, Three Mile Plains; many nieces & nephews; his best four legged friend Blackie. Born in Belldune, New Brunswick, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Clement Guitard. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Kentville; a dedicated homemaker, who enjoyed quilt making, her pets and playing bingo in Kentville. She had been employed for a short time at Canada Foods, Kentville. She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth (David) Amburg, Berwick; two sons, Garnet and David, both at home; a granddaughter, Heather (Jason) Levy, New Minas; great granddaughters, Sarah, Meghan and Rebekah; sisters-in-law, Nellie MacLeod, Oromocto, New Brunswick; Mildred (Francis) LeBlanc, Haneytown, New Brunswick; Marion Dance, Montreal, Quebec; brothers-in-law, Donald Beach, Kentville; Fred Beach (Leona), St. Stephen, New Brunswick; several nieces and nephews. September 2, 2007 to September 8, 2007 PARKER, Wilbur Obadiah – 99 passed away peacefully at Tideview Terrace, Digby, N.S. on Sept. 2, 2007. Born in Bear River on March 7, 1908, he was the oldest son of Lulu (Rice) and Alfred Parker. He was predeceased by his first wife, Florence (Peck) and his second wife, Jennie (Peck). He is survived by daughters Alberta; Leona (Jud) Sibbins, Mount Uniacke; sons Basil (Dorothy), British Columbia; David (Beverley), Bear River; Paul (Debbie), New Hampshire, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Wilbur was also predeceased by brothers Frank, Carl and Malcolm, sister Frances Peck, son-in-law Ken Dotson and grandsons Peter Parker and Nathan Parker. At his request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service of praise and thanksgiving will be held on Sunday, Sept. 3 at the Advent Christian Church, Bear River, N.S., at 3 p.m., with a reception to follow. September 2, 2007 to September 8, 2007 Ellen “Nellie” Gertrude Lockhart -93, Avonport, passed away Monday September 3, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Hortonville, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Mary (Rathburn) MacIntosh. Nellie will be sadly missed by her many family and friends. She is fondly remembered as being a caring foster mother for over 45 years to over 100 children. Nellie loved gardening and bird watching. She was a lifetime active member of the Avonport Baptist Church being involved in the choir, ladies auxiliary and the decorating committee. Nellie was well known for her beautiful Christmas displays at her home that many looked forward to seeing each year. She is survived by her sons, Jack (Regina), Avonport; Neil (Sharon), Hantsport; Donnie (Glenda), Lockhartville; Jimmie (Linda), Avonport; daughters, Kathy (Jack) Hayward, Bridgewater; Beth (Murray) Corbin, Avonport; beloved foster children, Shirley Principi, David Butler; brother, Harry MacIntosh; brothers-in-law, Harris Hartlin, Earl Lockhart; sister-in-law, Violet MacIntosh; 15 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents Nellie was predeceased by childhood sweetheart, her husband of 58 years, Murray Lockhart; brothers, Stewart, Donald, Stephen (In Infancy) MacIntosh; sisters, Mary Hartlin, Eva Urban, Bessie Pulsifer; granddaughters, Andrea and Jacqueline. Visitation for Mrs. Lockhart was held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday September 5 in the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home 568 Main Street, Wolfville (902-542-2151) A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday September 6 in the Avonport Baptist Church with Pastor Gail Whalen-Dunn officiating with a reception to follow. Burial took place in Lower Horton Cemetery, Grand Pre. September 2, 2007 to September 8, 2007 Gerald David “Bush” Fisher – 73, of New Minas, formerly of Pasadena, Newfoundland, passed away on Monday, September 3, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville with his family by his side. Born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Christopher and Irene (Pye) Fisher. He had been employed with the former Newfoundland Telephone (Aliant) for many years and was involved with the Telephone Pioneers. He was a member of the Masonic Order AF&AM and had been active with Lodge Humber in Deer Lake, Newfoundland. Gerry enjoyed life to the fullest and since receiving his heart transplant 20 years ago was ever thankful for the gift of life. He was a loving and caring grandfather to his two special grandchildren, Kate and Olivia. Together with his wife they retired in Nova Scotia in 1993 and he was a member of the Glooscap Curling Club, Kentville. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, the former Elizabeth “Beth” Mews; two daughters, Jill Fisher, New Minas; Jo Ann (Scott) Inness, Dartmouth; a sister, Edna (Bryant) Goosney, Brighton, Ontario; two brothers, Robert (Yvonne) Bathurst; Dean (Shirley), Deer Lake; mother-in-law, Mary Mews, Windsor; sister-in-law, Mary Lou (Bramwell) Chaulk, Bonne Bay Pond, Newfoundland; two grandchildren, Kate and Olivia; several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 6, 2007 in the New Minas United Church, Reverend Larry Doyle officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Pasadena, Newfoundland. Family flowers only by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
