Remaining green and family friendly
Queens County SeaFest Volunteers are no longer green at being green, says Planning Committee Chair, Jean Robinson-Dexter.
“It’s ongoing. We take it very seriously and ensure there are plenty of waste management stations in partnership, once again, with the (community group) Queens Association for Supported Living.”
SeaFest pays them for their work, which includes educating the public and picking up litter.
Robinson-Dexter says, “It’s a valuable employment experience for them and our grounds are just kept pristine. They provide a great service for us.”
She adds SeaFest works with their vendors to ensure most containers used are compostable and Region 6 Solid Waste Management personnel to ensure proper signage is in place.
In addition, the Resource Recovery Fund Board interactive recycling cart robot, MOBY S. LOOP will be on-site once again. The Board, for the first time, is a sponsor this year as well, Robinson-Dexter says.
She adds she wants to stress, “the overall program is of great value to families.
“We usually have one inflatable on site, which is free. This year, we have one on Saturday and a different one on Sunday, which is new.”
Numerous other family friendly events and activities include face painter, Patty Cakes, Dynamos in Action, a “dry” family section during the day in the entertainment tent, a planked salmon supper, and, new to this year, a Kids Dinky Car Show and Car Show n’ Shine on Sunday afternoon
Robinson-Dexter says, “SeaFest is very orientated towards families and also is orientated towards non-profit community groups to give them an opportunity to raise funds (through primarily concession stands and other fundraisers) for programs and services they offer to the community.”
