August 12, 2007 to August 18, 2007 continued M. Louise (Fennell) 90, well known south end Halifax and Chester resident, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Windsor on Tuesday, August 14, 2007. She was the daughter of the late Francis Fennell and Adele (Carroll) Fennell. She attended St. Thomas Aquinas School, St. Patrick’s High School and was a graduate of Miss McGlaughlan’s Business College. She was employed at the main branch of The Royal Bank of Canada in Halifax prior to her marriage. Mrs. Donahoe was President of Miss Murphy’s Business College and Donahoe Holdings Ltd., both family owned companies. She was a member of the Waegwoltic Club, The Saraguay Club, The Halifax Curling Club and the Chester Golf Club. She was a founding member of Canadian Martyrs Church, for many years a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church and most recently of St. Mary’s Basilica. Mrs. Donahoe is survived by her daughter, Dr. Martha (Bruce) Jodrey, Windsor and Chester; grandsons James “Jay” (Michelle Warr), Calgary and Joel Jodrey, Halifax; sisters, Patricia Fennell and Irene (Mrs. C.W.P. Crookshank) both of Halifax and brothers, Frederick, Toronto and Dr. Francis Fennell, Halifax. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, Francis “Frank” J. Donahoe and a brother, Edward. Visitation will be from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm on Friday, August 17 in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax. The funeral mass will take place at Canadian Martyr’s Church, Inglis Street on Saturday, August 18 at 10:00 am with Father James Mallon and Father Lloyd O’Neill officiating. Reception immediately following for family and friends at Canadian Martyrs Parish Hall. Private family interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Chair in Learning Disabilities at Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax a cause which was very close to her heart. August 12, 2007 to August 18, 2007 continued Nona Weisner – 80, of Lower Canard, Kings County, passed away Monday, August 13, 2007 at home. Born in Canning, she was a daughter of the late John and Blanche (Spicer) Thomson. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She enjoyed attending jam sessions throughout the area and had a love for flowers. She is survived by a daughter, Janet (Neil) Cruickshank, Canning; a son, Ron (Jeannette), Weston; two sisters, Mary (Merlin) Barkhouse, Canning; Isabel (George) Addington, Kentville; a brother, Robert (Evelyn), Canning; a sister-in-law, Betty Thomson, Clyde River, Shelburne County; eight grandchildren, Bruce (Sandra), Scott (Angela) and Mark (Charlene) Cruickshank; Jennifer, Cheryl, Heather, Carly and Ashly Weisner; three great grandchildren, Danielle, Nicholas and Olivia Cruickshank; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of almost 60 years, Clyde; a brother, William “Bill”; a great grandson, Lucas Cruickshank. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, August 15, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 16, 2007, Reverend Phil Locke officiated. August 12, 2007 to August 18, 2007 continued CARVER, Weldon B. —43, of West Caledonia, Queens County, passed away suddenly at home on Aug. 14, 2007. Born in Caledonia, he was the son of Doris (Armstrong) Carver and the late Gerton Allan Carver. Weldon was a former stationery engineer with Gummed Paper Limited of Brampton, ON. He sheared Christmas trees for Kirk’s Tree yard and was an equipment operator for Freeman’s Mill in Greenfield. He was a big fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays and loved to fish and hunt. Weldon loved to play darts and cards and was a former associate member with A.L. Patterson Branch, #87, Royal Canadian Legion, Caledonia. He is survived by daughter Stevi MacIntosh of Lockeport; sons, G. Allan and MacKenzie, both of Caledonia; sisters: Helen (George) Uhlman, Janet (Freddie) Weare both of Caledonia; Jeanne (Stephen) Martin, of West LaHave; Carolyn (Hilton) Veinot of Hemford and Rosanna (John) Terpstra of Barrie, ON as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 21st, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in Caledonia United Church. Pastor Tom Watson officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Caledonia. August 12, 2007 to August 18, 2007 continued MUISE, Violet Mary - 96, Melbourne, Yarmouth Co., passed away August 15, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on November 26, 1910, in Lower Melbourne, Yarmouth Co., she was a daughter of the late John and Helen (Saulnier) Harrington. Violet was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. She loved to read, make quilts, knit, hook rugs and cook. She was a great mother and will be missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. Violet is survived by daughters, Kathryn (Edmund) Doucette, Arcadia; Pauline DeViller, Yvonne (Lloyd) Fitzgerald, Norma Surette, all of Melbourne; sons, Arthur (Mildred), Nelson (Audrey), Gerald, all of Melbourne; William (Alma), North Bay, Ont.; sisters, Cecelia DeViller, Melbourne; Marion Pothier, Melbourne; 22 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 22 great great-grandchildren. Violet was predeceased by her husband, Edward Stillman Muise; son, Douglas; brothers, Edward, Raymond, Michael; sisters, Mae, Eva, Georgina, Mabel, Katherine, Mary, Nettie; grandchildren, Shirley, Eric, Frank Jr., Gloria, Jerry, Neil, Arthur; great-grandchildren, Raymond, Andrea, and one baby boy in infancy. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Albert and Harriett (Schofield) Brown. He had been employed with security for many years with the former Nova Scotia Sanatorium and the Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital, as well as the Valley Regional Hospital. He is survived by two sons, Donald (Shirley) Brown, Glenmont and Wayne (Elizabeth) Brown, Kentville; five grandchildren, Matthew (Cindy), Wetaskiwin, Alberta; Kenneth and Eric, at home; Kirk, New Minas; Angela (Morgan) Swinamer, Kentville; three great grandchildren, Alison Brown, Kaija Cashin-Brown and Ashlea Swinamer. He was predeceased by his wife, Muriel “Tooky” (Pearl) Brown; a son, Bobby, in infancy; three brothers, Ted, Jim and Walter; two sisters, Hazel and Marjorie. August 12, 2007 to August 18, 2007 continued Stefan Joseph Henry Haley – 63, of Kentville, passed away Friday, August 17, 2007 in Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. Born in Kentville, he was a son of Adeline (Anderson) Haley, Kentville, and the late Joseph Haley. He graduated from Acadia University in 1967. Stefan was an avid collector and lover of classical music, a poet, a writer, and enjoyed reading. He had been employed as a free-lance writer and was most recently working in Korea as an editorial consultant to the Senior Editor of YBM Publications, which included CNN, Newsweek, and National Geographic. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Matthew (Helena Arente), Toronto; three sisters, Donna Giffin, Bedford; Betty Haley (Stephen Crosbie), East Bay, Cape Breton; Cathy (Andrew) Lewis, Kentville. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 23, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Mr. Alan Sloan officiating. August 12, 2007 to August 18, 2007 continued HICHENS - Honorable Walter W., 90., of 2088 State Road Eliot, Me. Summer home 3124 Hwy #3 Barrington, N.S. Canada went to be with his Lord Sunday morning July 22,2007 He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, following months of failing health. He was born March 8,1917 in Lynn, Mass. Son of Walter G. and Mary (Norton) Hichens. The grandson of Benjamin K. Hichens better know as Dr. Hichens. Who lived in Barrington all his life. Senator Walter W. Hichens and his wife Elmira spent their summers in Barrington from 1967 thru 2002 when Elmira went to be with her Lord. They attended the Temple Church in Barrington and the Stone Church in Clarks Harbour regularly. They both participated in the exhibitions there and one lots of ribbons for the flowers, produce, and bakery items the entered in the contest. Senator Hichens was the author of three books that he wrote in memory of Nova Scotia- They were Island Trek, Back to my Father and Home, and Light in the Darkness. Walter and his wife Elmira spent 61 wonderful years together raising their children. He is survived by his Sister Ethel (Hichens) Smith age 102, and his seven children, two sons Walter Jr. and Jared, and 5 daughters, Mary, Jan. Judy, Kathy and Bethany. he leaves behind 24 grand-children and 44 great grandchildren, and expecting a great-great grandchild that is due in October. Good byes are the law of earth, reunions are the law of heaven. He would like in lieu of flowers donations made to the Historical Society of Barrington, The Temple Church in Barrington, and the Stone church in Clark’s Harbour.
August 12, 2007 to August 18, 2007 continued It is with profound sadness that the families of Anne “Annie” Sophia Dauphinee (Gates), 75, of Richibucto, New Brunswick, formerly of River Hebert, Cumberland County, announce her sudden passing surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 in the Stella Maris Hospital, Sainte Anne De Kent, New Brunswick. Born in River Hebert, she was the daughter of the late John and Cora (Miller) Gates. She was a retired nurse’s aide. In her earlier years, she played an active role in youth organizations. Prior to moving to Richibucto, where her daughter Cora cared for her, she was a member of the Mall High Club in New Minas. She enjoyed crafts, reading and quilting, but her greatest accomplishment was raising eight children. Besides her husband, and best friend, William S. Dauphinee, New Minas, she is survived by her sons, John (Susan), Springhill; Paul (Donna), Halifax; Terry (Tracy), Halifax and Mike (Tracy), New Minas; daughters, Cora “Coreine” Paul (John Richard), Richibucto; Carmel (Alan Hudson), Kentville and Rachel Kennedy (Troy), Timberlea; brothers, James (Phyllis) Kamloops, British Columbia; Harold “Huckey” (Emma), River Hebert; Henry, Amherst; sisters, Doreen (late Edwin Hurley), Maccan; Margaret (Perry White), Amherst; Vera (late Hiram Mills), Joggins; Cora “Mamie” (Donald Hoeg), Joggins and favorite aunt, Dorothy (late Llewelyn Hounsell); 33 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Anne was predeceased by brother, Arthur; daughter, Carol; son-in-law, John “Sonny”; grandsons, Gary Paul, John Paul Jr., Paul Jr. and 1st great grandson, Brandon Babineau. Special thanks to the Emergency Department Staff at Stella Maris Hospital, as well as the staff on the 2nd Floor Palliative Care Unit, especially Dr. Josette Vautour, Dr. Lise Langis, attending physician, Huberte Hebert, Vincent Scully, and Bernice Tucker, the Red Cross Society in New Brunswick, meals on wheels, and care-givers Anne Diggs, Maria and Diane. Visitation was held from 3:30-5 and 7–9 p.m. Sunday, August 19, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 20, 2007, Reverend Gary Manthorne officiated.
