The dance collective SINS (Sometimes in Nova Scotia), presented by Dance Nova Scotia, presents a lecture and showing August 24 at 5 p.m. at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts.

The self-produced, eclectic troupe consists of three dancers Susanne Chui, Jacinte Armstrong and Elise Vanderborght, choreographer Sara Coffin and composer Phil Thomson. Known as a collaboration of collective talent, SINS have been acquainted for years, but came together to perform in May 2006.

“We’ve been rehearsing and creating a dance piece derived from the Seven Deadly Sins” explains Chui. “Sara will be the choreographer of the first piece, entitled Gluttony.”

Taking turns at choreographing the sins, the collective has performed in Halifax, Toronto and Vancouver.

“We like our audience to let go and use their imagination… drawing audiences in a web of music and dance” says Vanderborght.

Ross Creek Centre for the Arts is host to SINS while DANS Summer Dance training intensive for senior dancers is in full swing.

Dianne Milligan, Dance Nova Scotia executive director says, “There’s not very much professional dance in Nova Scotia and to have these artists come home to work is a true reflection of the reality of living in Nova Scotia.

“A lot of dancers feel that they must go to larger centers to work. We’re using this showing to let young people and local audiences know that dance is alive and well and the dream is achievable.”

The highly physical movement of this piece showcases dance on all plains and demonstrates the possibilities of where you can be in just 10 short years.
