Historically, it was the first of its kind, but in every other aspect the same-sex marriage of Kings-Hants MP Scott Brison to long-time partner Maxime St. Pierre was as traditional as they come, right down to the little country church.
There was standing room only at the United Church in Cheverie once rains foiled plans for an outdoor ceremony. Well-known Windsor United church minister Rev. Bill Gibson officiated the nuptials described by Windsor's Deputy Mayor Andy Kirk as a “very moving and joyous ceremony.”
Kirk, a friend of Brison’s for more than 20 years, said that aside from being a historic event, the wedding was a time for rejoicing. He said the applause was a clear sign of support.
“People were applauding, then wondering if they should stop, then starting again because they just couldn't help themselves. We were all so happy for the couple. It was a time to celebrate.”
Rain and a media onslaught did little to deter the happy occasion. Security for the very private wedding was provided locally by Security Management Group, owned and operated by Scott Furlotte of Falmouth. As well, access to the road to the church was managed by RCMP members.
The festivities continued at the couple’s home on Kipp's Beach. Under a large white tent, fine fare from Le Caveau at Domaine de Grand Pre afforded guests a full-course meal.
Kirk said the food was excellent, the music was good and there was plenty of dancing. “It was a wonderful party,” he said. “The rain didn't cause any problems at all. It was all so carefully and beautifully arranged.”
Parents and family members from both sides joined the couple and the traditional wedding toasts paid tribute to the union. “As in most weddings it was humorous and merry, but there were serious and touching moments as well,” Kirk said. “An ambiance of celebration permeated the entire wedding. Janet (wife) and I are so very happy for him.”
