July 29, 2007 to August 4, 2007 continued Doris Almira (Whitney) MacDonald – much loved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, departed this world in the early hours of Saturday, August 4, 2007. She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Jessie (MacConechy) Whitney, her sister, Gladys, and brother, Gerald, all of West Halls Harbour. Doris is survived by John, her husband of 53 years, West Halls Harbour; her daughters, Joan (Lou) Snyder, New Minas; Jennifer (Mark Setterfield) MacDonald, Massachusetts, USA; Jessica (Patrick) Van Luxemborg, Kentville; her brother, Lewis (Myrtis) Whitney, East Halls Harbour; her sister, Margaret (the late Tom) Chambers, Carrolls Corner; her grandchildren, Scott (Jullie) Snyder, Massachusetts, USA; Anna-Leigh (Dorion Cudmore) Snyder, Fredericton, NB; Jane Snyder, New Minas; John and Andrew Van Luxemborg, Kentville; her niece, Jessie (Dan) MacDonald, Carrolls Corner; and nephews, Paul (Wilma) Chambers, Maryland, USA; Frank (Debbie) Chambers, Hammonds Plains; Tommy Chambers, Carrolls Corner; Gregory (Barb) Whitney, Coldbrook; Stephen (the late Kathy) Whitney, West Halls Harbour; Jeffery Whitney, Coldbrook; Mark Whitney, West Halls Harbour; Gerrit (Angie) Whitney, East Halls Harbour; and Sean Gervason, Coldbrook. Doris graduated from Miss Murphy’s School of Business and was a long-time member of the Tops Club (#NS 0378). She was an energetic member of her community; for many years she was the Fundy View Community Women’s Club treasurer and an active participant in the Fundy View Community Club. Her many and varied duties with the Halls Harbour United Baptist Church are well known to all members of the Church. Dedicated to her family, her love will remain with them always. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Monday, August 6, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where a funeral service, followed by a reception was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 7, 2007 with Reverend Gerald Zinck and Pastor David Cumby officiating. Burial took place in the West Halls Harbour Cemetery. Donations in memory of Doris may be made to the Halls Harbour United Baptist Church or the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation. July 29, 2007 to August 4, 2007 continued MACKINNON, Keith Ian—68, Bridgewater, died August 4, 2007 at home. Born February 12, 1939 in Liverpool, Queens Co., he was the son of the late Robert Kitchener and Margaret Jean (Smiley) MacKinnon. Ian graduated from Acadia University in 1966 with a diploma in education and was a teacher/principal in Arcadia, Yarmouth Co.; Newcombville, Mahone Bay and Hebbville, Lunenburg Co.; retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Bridgewater Curling Club, Olde Town Golf Club and the Bridgewater United Church, serving on the Board of Stewards. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 24, Bridgewater. He was an avid hunter and spent many hours at his camp on Turtle Lake, West Caledonia. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Lynn (Aitken); sons, Craig David (Yolanda), Thunder Bay, ON; Paul Kitchener (Erica), Halifax; grandchildren David Petteri and Bianca Skye; sister Shirley Babin, Liverpool; brothers R.K. (Dorothy Anne), Liverpool, James, Lachute, Que; nieces and nephews, Frank Babin, Barbara Snarby, Beverley Pettersen, Becky Mason, John MacKinnon, Scott MacKinnon, Shawn MacKinnon; several grandnieces and grandnephews; great grandnieces and great grandnephews. Cremation has taken place. A private family interment was held in Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. Memorial service was held at Bridgewater United Church, Rev. Ivan Norton officiated. July 29, 2007 to August 4, 2007 continued STANTON, William Ragan, 82, of East Ragged Island, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully with his daughters at his side on July 29th, 2007. Mr. Stanton was born in Belton, Texas. Beloved son of William T. Stanton and Leigh (Roberts) Stanton, predeceased by brother Richard. After a brief but amusing stint in the Navy, Mr. Stanton attended Baylor University earning a B.A. in History. He then went on to pursue his M.A. and Ph.D. at Brown University in American Civilization, publishing his thesis, The Leopard’s Spots: Scientific Attitudes Toward Race in America, 1815-1859, University of Chicago Press, 1960. After teaching at the University of Puerto Rico, Michigan State, Williams College, Massachusetts, and the National University of Ireland on a Fulbright Scholarship, Mr. Stanton became a Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. He taught for 1 year at the University of California, Berkley and on a Guggenheim Fellowship he took his family to Portugal where he worked on his book, The Great United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842, University of California Press, 1975. After teaching at William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia Mr. Stanton was a Senior Mellon Fellow in Bibliography with the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia. After retiring in 1994 he settled into the boating life as the proud captain of Killdeer and Julep and enjoyed many glasses of rum at sundown with his boatyard comrades. In 1995 Mr. Stanton moved to Nova Scotia where he spent his summers and wintered on Julep in Gloucester, Virginia. He loved both places but always “came home” to Nova Scotia. William was a man of wry wit, immense charm and endless hospitality. He will be greatly missed by his devoted daughters Jennifer Stanton Stuart, Alison Stanton and Susannah Stanton and his 6 grandchildren as well as countless friends that he shared good times with throughout his life. A Celebration of William’s life will be held at a later date. July 29, 2007 to August 4, 2007 continued HEMLOW, John Jeremiah “Myers” - 75, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 31, 2007, in Dartmouth General Hospital following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born January 29, 1932, in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Alexander and Florence (Moffatt) Hemlow. Over the past six years, John had been a faithful and active member of South End Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the Korean War with PPCLI. He was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 27 years as a paratrooper, infantry and completed his career as supply technician. John is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Gloria (Smith); children, John, Ontario; Sandra (Al) Wilson, Calgary; Robert “R.G.” (Deb). Calgary; Bruce (Judy), Winnipeg; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; siblings, Etta Brown, Hamilton, Ont.; Mae Morsh, Yarmouth, NS; Muriel Baker, Hamilton, Ont.; Bruce, Vancouver, BC; Brian, Toronto, Ont.; Kay Cockram, Hamilton, Ont. He was predeceased by siblings, Melvin, Joan and Sandy. The family would like to thank the nurses of the 3rd Floor, Dartmouth General Hospital and the pastor and friends at South End Baptist Church. Arrangements were entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, where John's family received friends from 6-9 p.m. Thursday. July 29, 2007 to August 4, 2007 continued MILLER, Hugh Theodore “Ted” – 91, passed away peacefully on Aug. 2, 2007, in Digby General Hospital following a short but courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Bear River, a son of the late Josephine (Riley) and Carl Miller. He was a veteran of the Second World War and was very proud to have served in the Royal Canadian Navy doing convoy duty in the North Atlantic on such ships as HMCS Ottawa, HMCS Granby, HMCS Drummondville and HMCS Chaudiere. After the war, he worked as a supervisor in the “Clothing Stores” at HMCS Cornwallis. He was a past president of the Digby Pines Golf Club and Digby Curling Club. He was a member of the Valley Seniors Golf Club and a life member of the Maritime Seniors Golf Club, He belonged to the Bear River Legion. He enjoyed mixed marathon bridge, men’s bridge and was an enthusiastic member of The $10 Poor House Poker Club. He was a faithful member of the Irving Coffee Club. Ted was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Rice); brothers, Beverly, San Diego, Calif.; Frank and Reginald, both of Bear River. He will be sadly missed but wonderfully remembered by brother, Clinton, Wilmot; sons, Douglas (Debby), Smith’s Cove; Gary, Bedford; grandsons Aaron (serving in Afghanistan), Colin (Michelle), Fredericton, N.B.; his good friend Jean Raymond, Digby; other family and friends. Arrangements are under the direction of Jayne’s Funeral Home. No visitation. Interment will take place in September, date not yet determined. July 29, 2007 to August 4, 2007 continued WHYNOT, David Herbert—37, of Milton, Queens County, passed away Friday, August 3rd, 2007, in Milton. Born in Liverpool, he was the youngest son of the late Herbert Jr. and Emma (Fisher) Whynot. David was a kind, loving and giving man. He had a true talent when working with his hands, a real handyman. He enjoyed listening to music and spending time with his friends. He is survived by his sisters, Joyce Whynot (James Wolfe), of Brooklyn, Laura (Wade) Oickle, of Halifax; brother James, of Milton; nieces Jill Wolfe and Candace Rhyno; nephews Ashley Whynot and Jamie Whynot; two great nieces and three great nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Brooke and sister Julieann. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. July 29, 2007 to August 4, 2007 continued LEVY, Elizabeth Anne passed away peacefully in Roseway Hospital on Sunday, July 29, 2007 with her husband and two sons by her side. She was born in Lockeport April 17, 1941, the daughter of Muriel (Wamback) and the late Archie Chetwynd. She was a loving wife and mother and will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by husband, Kenneth; sons, Paul, Robert and John; daughter, Charmaine; mother, in Shelburne; sister, Dorothy Scott, Lockeport; brothers, Robert & Cathy, Winnipeg, Man.; James & Darlene, East Jordan. She was predeceased by her father and sister, Nellie Louise. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. No memorial or visitation by request. Interment of ashes will be in Rockland Cemetery at a later date. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Canadian Kidney Foundation.
July 29, 2007 to August 4, 2007 continued AMERO, Joseph William, of Burnaby, B.C., formerly of Acacia Valley, Digby County, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2007, at the age of 68. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Elizabeth; his sisters, Louise, Ottawa; Atholean, Oromocto, N.B.; Adeline (Gerry), Digby; Joan, Dartmouth; Anna, Digby; Eileen, Digby; Mary (Jake) Wellandport, Ont. He was predeceased by parents, Hugh and Margaret Amero; brothers David, James and Edward. Joseph retired from the Canadian Forces after serving 24 years, and Canada Post. Funeral service was held in Vancouver, B.C. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke or Kidney Foundation or charity of choice.
