Dwight d’Eon didn’t manage to win over judge Sass Jordan, yet again, with his singing – or judge Zack Werner with his choice of jacket – but Canadian Idol host Ben Mulroney got the crowd up on its feet to congratulate the West Pubnico singer on the first guitar solo in the history of the show.

For his Top 6 performance, d’Eon performed ‘Smooth’ by Rob Thomas and Carlos Santana. Rather than an acoustic guitar he brought an electric one on stage and delighted the audience, and the judges, with a guitar solo when he stepped away from the microphone.

“There were moments when your voice was off a little but overall it was a plus in terms of performance, a lot of energy,” said judge Farley Flex.

Judge Jake Gold said while he agreed with Sass Jordan that vocally d’Eon’s effort wasn’t that strong, he said the overall performance was great, adding he’d like to see more guitar playing from d’Eon in the future.

“I thought it was cool and the vibe of it, it was not Rob Thomas, it was your own thing,” said judge Zack Werner. “The fact is it was you, and if you’re still here next week the East Coast finally got one right.”

Skimming through comments posted on Facebook’s ‘d’Eon Nation,’ d’Eon supporters took full advantage of the two hours available to them for voting, although many lamented the busy signals they kept running up against.

Tonight the field of six will decrease by one when the results are announced and the Top 5 is unveiled.
