Loft concerts lively, entertaining

Opposite ends of the musical spectrum collided beautifully Friday night in Windsor when Halifax singer/songwriter Ruth Minnikin and Saskatoon’s The Cracker Cats played the Mermaid Theatre Loft.

Minnikin was in town to promote her latest album, ‘Folk Art’, and she was all style and substance, with funky lyrical journeys punctuated by sweet sounds on the guitar.

The Cracker Cats – Kamila on mandolin; Melissa on guitar; and Eliza working the banjo – upped the tempo for the latter half of the evening in support of ‘Livin’ on the Run’, and offered traditional roots music with some good old-fashioned kick. The result was a heck of a show for a small but enthusiastic audience.

The Cracker Cats play On the Verge in Wolfville Aug. 12. For more information, call On the Verge at (902) 542-9399. For information on upcoming shows at the Mermaid Theatre Loft, call 798-5841, ext. 7.
