An 80-year-old model of the original Bluenose has been donated to the Queens County Museum in memory of the model owner’s wife.
Captain Angus Walters, who mastered the original ship, owned the Bluenose model.
On Aug. 3 Edward Albers Junior along with his family presented the model ship to the museum.
“I think it’s one of the most exciting donations we have received,” said Queens County Museum Director, Linda Rafuse.
Sometime before 1930, Walters gave it to his friend, Charles William Zinck of Brooklyn.
Zinck was the grandfather of Alber’s late wife, Harriet Louise Albers Zinck.
Zinck then left the model to his son, Charles Elwood Zinck, formerly of Liverpool before he moved to Florida.
In 1954, Alber married Harriet, the daughter of Charles and the model ship was given to him.
The Albers live in Knoxville, Tennessee, where the model Bluenose has rested for many years.
Alber and his wife had planned on presenting the model to the museum last September, he explained in a letter.
However, his wife passed away on July 4, 2006.
Alber, their three daughters and their families gathered in Liverpool on Aug. 3 to present the model ship to the Queens County Museum in memory of Harriet Louise Zinck Albers.
“My wife would be please,” he said during the presentation. Besides being on the back of the dime, the Bluenose lives on.”
