Jean Morrison Gillis – 86, formerly of Kentville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 in Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Born in Oxford, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Mary Hiltz. She was an avid bridge player, a member of the Ken-Wo Golf and Country Club and a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program. Most of all she was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had a great love for animals and was a kind friend to all who knew her. She is survived by three daughters, Kathy (Harry) Oxner, Dublin Shore, Lunenburg County; Margaret “Peggy” Gillis, Halifax; Barbara Hawkes, Halifax; a brother, John Hiltz, Berwick, Kings County; five grandchildren, Christopher and Terry Oxner, both of Kentville; Paul Schofield, Alberta; Suzanne and Michael Hawkes, Halifax; three great grandchildren, Dana, Fiona and Matthew Purdy, Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, George; two sisters, Pauline Gregg and Marnie Bethune. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Kentville United Baptist Church or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. OKE, Hazel Irene, 87, of Roseway Manor, Sandy Point, Shelburne Co., passed away in Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point, Shelburne Co., on Wednesday, July 25, 2007. Born in Jordan Falls, she was a daughter of the late John and Eunice (Hollingsworth) Bell. Hazel was a hairdresser during her working life. She is survived by son, Bob (Jeanette) Bell, Hammonds Plains; Heather Goodick, Sandy Point; sister, Alice Thorburn, Alliston, Ontario; grandchildren, Joe (Brenda), Welshtown; Jamie (Lisa), Sandy Point; Jacintha Bell; Jim Bell; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 step great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. She was predeceased by her husband, Russell; brothers, Harold and Basil; sister, Gladys Freeman. Funeral service was held on Saturday, July 28 in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Jordan Falls with Rev. Marilyn Kathleen Atwell – 67, of Gaspereau Mountain, Kings County, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2007 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Wolfville, she was the daughter of the late Wilfred Veino and Marguerite (Cook) Cavanagh. She had been employed with the Steadman’s Store in Wolfville and later the Wolfville School. She most recently looked after housework and cared for many people throughout the Wolfville area. She enjoyed being home, taking care of family, and tending to her flower garden. She is survived by two daughters, Shannon (Danny) Legge, Blomidon; Marina Atwell (Mike Maillet), Halifax; three sons, Danny, Greenfield; Troy, Gaspereau; Raymond, Halifax; a brother, Leroy (Pauline) Cavanagh, Gaspereau Mountain; five grandchildren, Jason, Jeffrey, Emily, Evan and Cody. She was predeceased by her husband, Claude; a grandson, Aaron. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. CROSLYN, Charles Erle -74, Middleton, NS, passed away, Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at home. Born on Gates Mountain, he was a son of the late Charles and Anita (Fraser) Croslyn. Erle retired after 39 years of service with Public Works, Town of Middleton. He enjoyed playing cards and dearly loved his children and grandchildren. Erle is survived is by his daughters, Linda (David) Silver, Airdrie, AB; Yvonne (Steve), Folker, Brooklyn, Hants County; Darlene Croslyn, Rockland, ON; sons, Christopher and Calvin, both of Middleton; Michael, Grand Prairie, AB and 10 grandchildren. †He was predeceased by his wife, the former Susan Schnare; brothers, Carl and Hollis. Marie Isabel Skaling – 86, of Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, formerly of Greenwich, Kings County, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2007 in the Lodge. Born in Lower Burlington, Hants County, she was a daughter of the late Percy and Laura (Smith) Sanford. She attended school in Riverside, Hants County and eventually settled in Greenwich in 1948, where she lived until moving to Dykeland Lodge several years ago. Marie was employed for many years with the former White Spot Restaurant in New Minas, retiring as a Food Supervisor. She was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm “Mac”, and is survived by his daughters, Maxine Padovan and Olga Marsters, both of Hants Border; a sister in law, Cecilia Sanford, Sweets Corner, Hants County; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; five nieces and two nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Nellie and a brother, James. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Monday, July 30, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2007, Reverend Robert Billings officiated. FOWLER, Charles Maxwell, 79, Lydgate, Shelburne Co., passed away peacefully in Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point, Shelburne Co., on Tuesday, July 24, 2007. Born September 16, 1927, in Grand Bank, N.L., he was the eldest son of the late William and Alfreda (Driscoll) Fowler. Max was a people person who especially enjoyed spending time with his many family members and friends. Max worked with H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home through four generations of service. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret Chant, Lydgate, and his children, Alfreda (Norman) Savoury, Belleoram, Fortune Bay, N.L.; Ethel (Bill) Ringer, Truro; Stella (Charles) Whynot, Brooklyn, Queens Co.; Eugene (Donna), Wallaceburg, Ont.; Shirley (Frank) Nicoll, Shelburne; Lorna (Richard) Swansburg, Little Harbour, Shelburne Co.; Peggy (Bobby) MacIntosh, Lunenburg; Dan, Toronto, Ont.; Robert, Lydgate; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren with another great grandchild to be born any day, as well as his brother, Norman, Grand Bank, N.L. Richard Arthur Earl "Dick" Rawlins – 72, Bishopville, Kings Co., passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 25, 2007, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Cornwall, Ont., he was a son of the late Earl and Evelyn "Molly" (Lafever) Rawlins, as well as a stepson of Dorothy Rawlins. Dick was well-known for being the first privately owned tree servicer in Atlantic Canada. He was a past president of Kings-South Progressive Conservative Party, a former member of Kings County School Board, past president of the Truckers Association of Nova Scotia, and a former member of the Masonic Lodge. Dick was an active member of the Upper Vaughan, Bishopville and Hantsport Baptist Churches, and in his spare time enjoyed fishing and curling. He is survived by his wife, the former Barbara Smith; sons, Joel (Paulette Sanford), Centreville, Kings Co.; Daniel (Susan), Bishopville; Shane (Kimberley Wright), Centreville, Kings Co.; daughters, Cathy (David Owen) Rawlins, Black Rock, Kings Co.; Karen (Mike Cochran) Rawlins, Hantsport; Kim (Tom) Selinger, Brantford, Ont.; Melanie (Randy Payzant) Rawlins, Bishopville; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Richard lost his mother when he was only two and a half years of age, and besides his dad and stepmother, he was predeceased by sisters, Joyce MacKinnon and Audrey Ditmars. CARTER, Walter Daniel—71, of McCormick, South Carolina, passed away suddenly at home on July 27, 2007. Born in Guelph, Ontario, he was the son of the late Walter and Mary Carter. Walter served in the United States Air Force for 20 years as an electronics technician, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant. He was a former employee for Hughes Aircraft and was a Master Mason. Walter is survived by his daughter Faerlie (George) Desilva of Cumming, Georgia; grandchildren: Jennifer, Jonathan, Nadine and Gregory and three great grandchildren; sister Dorothy Normand of Ontario; sister-in-law June Mole of British Colombia and brother-in-law Angus Doggett of Shubenacadie. He was predeceased by his wife the former Faye Doggett and son Phillip. A graveside service was held Friday, August 3, 2007 in White Point Cemetery. Croft, Joan—Joan passed away peacefully on July 27, 2007, ending her long and courageous struggle with multiple sclerosis. Her wonderful sense of humor, sharp mind and tremendous inner strength saw us through all the rough times and will lead us on. She was born on September 20, 1932 to Guy Lamont and Lilly May (Jollimore) White. Always leading an active and hard working life, her early careers were as a grocery store clerk, car hop, candy factory worker, cook and waitress at a diner and receptionist for Dr. Lloyd MacLeod, a position she held for many years. She always enjoyed meeting and serving the public. She also served God in her active years as a member of Grace Anglican Church and as president of the Grace Anglican Church Guild for many years. She will be missed by her family and her old and dear friends. We will take comfort in a poem that she wrote “No Tears For Me” and strength from her motto “The Lord will never give you more than you can bear.” She is survived by her husband of 55 years, William “Bim” Edward; daughters: Carolyn (Kent) MacDonald of Timberlea, Donna (Michael) Herman, of Western Head; son Alan of Walden; sisters Florence (Fred) Robar of Dartmouth, Marion (Clyde) Whynot of Milton; brother Jack (Charlotte) White of Western Head; sister-in-law Verna White of Western Head, brother and sister-in-law Avery and Jean Croft, of Western Head; sister-in-law Viola Henley of Timberlea; grandchildren: Daniel MacDonald, Kristin (Herman) and Ritchie Lake, Michelle Herman and Nathan Croxen, Tonya Croft and Matthew Croft. DAVIS, Douglas Randolph “Randy” - 58, Yarmouth, passed away July 27, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital after a short but valiant fight against cancer. Born in Digby on June 23, 1949, Randy was a son of Hazel Davis and the late Ira Davis. Randy was the owner and operator of Swifty Automotive. He will be remembered as a hard-working, highly respected man, known for his integrity and fairness to all, as well as his humour and engaging smile. His other careers included the RCMP (1970-1983), as well as several positions in the automotive business. Randy is survived by his loving wife, Martha Muise-Davis; his mother, Hazel; his former wife, Jill, and their daughters, Christa Moran, Edmonton; Greta (Russel) Nauffs, Dartmouth; and his stepchildren, Lynette (Ted) Niles, Toronto; and Darren Smith, Carleton; brother, Bryan (Verna), Digby; nephew, Michael (Tanya) Davis, Dartmouth; as well as grandchildren, Brandon, Carson, Mikayla and Colton. He was predeceased by his infant brother, Stephen. He is dearly loved and will be deeply missed.
