House arrest for robbery

The court has sentenced a Kentville man to a term of house arrest for robbery.

Judge Alan Tufts imposed a six-month conditional sentence order (CSO) in Kentville provincial court Monday, July 23 on Carson Lee Bezanson, 22, for robbing a person of a sum of money. The sentence will be followed by 18 months of reporting probation.

The CSO includes three months’ house arrest, with the usual exceptions for employment, education, appointments and emergencies.

The probationary conditions include, among others, Bezanson refraining from possessing and/or consuming alcoholic beverages and/or non-medically prescribed drugs; have no association with persons with criminal, drug or youth records; and take assessment, counselling or treatment recommended by Corrections officials.

Bezanson committed the robbery in Kentville Oct. 1, 2006 and pleaded guilty to the charge May 9.

Jailed for credit card use

A Halifax man is off to jail for using a stolen credit card in New Minas in 2005.

Kenneth Albert Godsoe, 44, pleaded guilty July 23 to knowingly using a credit card that had been obtained illegally.

Judge Alan Tufts sentenced Godsoe to one month in custody. The sentence was a joint recommendation by Crown prosecutor Darrell Carmichael and defense counsel Rob Stewart.

Godsoe committed the offense Sept. 3, 2005. He had been remanded by consent since October, 2006.

Blood-alcohol twice the legal limit

Aylesford resident Reginald Garth Dempsey, 60, pleaded guilty July 23 to having care and control of a motor vehicle while his blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.

Judge Tufts fined Dempsey $850 plus a $127.50 victim surcharge, or 16 days in custody on willful default, and prohibited him from driving in Canada for a year.

The Nova Scotia Registry of Motor Vehicles will ban Dempsey from driving in the province for at least a year.

Dempsey committed the offense in Berwick June 2 when police found he had blood-alcohol readings of 190 and 180 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

The legal limit is 80 mg/100 ml and the Criminal Code allows for heavier penalties for those breathalyzer offenses involving readings in excess of 160 mg/100 ml.

Drove while privilege revoked

Aylesford resident Troy Higgins, 29, pleaded guilty July 23 to driving while his privilege of obtaining a driver’s license was revoked, contrary to the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicles Act. Judge Tufts fined Higgins $750.

Higgins committed the offense in Greenwood June 9.

Left the scene

Wilmot resident Frederick Vallis, 44, pleaded guilty July 23 to failing to immediately stop at the scene of a motor vehicle accident in which he was involved, contrary to the Government Property Traffic Regulations. Judge Tufts fined Vallis $500.

Vallis committed the offense at 14 Wing Greenwood May 4.

Didn’t drive carefully, prudently

Tremont resident Darrell Mark Toole, 42, pleaded guilty July 23 to failing to drive in a prudent and careful manner, contrary to the Motor Vehicles Act. Judge tufts fined Toole $100.

Toole committed the offense in Tremont July 9.
