Carrie-Lynn Perry, Matt Teeter, Julie DeMaeyer, Lawrence DeMaeyer and Heather Ginzel formed a contemporary folk group known as Big Love in 1994. The band plans to stop in Windsor and play at a free outdoor concert July 27.

Big love for the community marks why a free family concert will be held July 27 at Victoria Park in Windsor.
The Windsor Recreation Department, Windsor Business Enhancement and Moe’s Place Music Sales are hosting a free outdoor concert featuring local musical groups Easily Distracted and Simons Funk Garden, along with Ontario-based contemporary folk band Big Love. Big Love is currently on an east coast tour.
Carrie-Lynn Perry, bass guitarist and back-up vocalist for Big Love, says the band comes across as the Indigo Girls meet R.E.M. with a Canadian twist, and offers a contemporary folk sound to which people can relate.
“The group believes in the power of words. The lyrics are about love, life and experiences people can connect to,” she said. Members of Big Love consist of Perry, lead vocalist Julie DeMaeyer, multi-instrumental musician Heather Ginzel, lead guitarist Lawrence DeMaeyer and drummer Matt Teeter.
The band is excited to play in Windsor because this smaller show will allow for a more intimate setting, Perry said. “Those are some of our favourite ones to do because the people attending those types of show are really there to listen to music.”
Nice thing for the town
Event organizer Willard Wood, owner of Moe’s Music Sales, says the event is entirely free and will be a nice thing for the Town of Windsor. “The free concert does a couple of things: it gives us pride in our young people, and it’s great for the people around here who are all great people to work with.
“The goal is to create a nice family atmosphere around our town,” Wood said. “I’m proud of our young people and our area. I’d like to see us do something like this concert every year because this event is not about promotions or money. It’s about the community cooperating together.”
It would be neat to see other businesses in the area contribute to a similar event in the future and to see these free concerts develop into a big festival, Wood said. “I’m hoping this event leads the charge to have more stuff.”
The Hants-West/Kings-Hants PC Associations are onboard for the outdoor concert, supplying free hot dogs and drinks for the event. The show runs from 7-10:30 p.m. and people are encouraged to come out with lawn chairs in hand.
