Photographers move in right direction
Taryn Jollimore (right) and Shelagh Anderson of Take One Photography moved to Milton shortly before participating in and working at Liverpool Regional High School’s 50th Anniversary Reunion. The former Calgary residents are shown “fixing up” their property. Jollimore’s childhood home is Liverpool. They hope to open their photography studio in 2008 but, because of their numerous off-site services, are already working. Take One Photography

THE ADVANCE

Taryn Jollimore is a young person who decided to move in the opposite direction of many Maritimers.
However, she calls it moving forward. “We’re going the right way. I haven’t been happy in Calgary for quite awhile.”

The former Liverpool resident made it home in time for Liverpool Regional High School’s 50th Anniversary Reunion but has wanted to return to Queens County for “a couple of years.”

She and her partner, Shelagh Anderson arrived June 29, less than a week before the school event. “The reunion was great and we were also able to showcase our work there.”

Jollimore explains she and Anderson, a now-former Calgary resident, have expanded their seven-year-old business, Take One Photography to Queens County and Nova Scotia. Both, of course, are photographers.

They are maintaining an office in Calgary to service their existing contracts and clients.

A quick airplane ride is all that is needed, Anderson says. “Our personal lives have changed but our business is now expanding across Canada.”

She adds she was in a “terrible accident” last year that changed how she thought about “enjoying life” and helped accelerate the timing of their move to Queens County.

They purchased a house in Milton that residents have advised is at least 150 years old. It requires extensive renovations but will eventually host a photography studio and office space in addition to being their home.

Much of their business, however, involves their mobile studio, complete with lighting gear, in the form of an RV. Their services range from commercial work and weddings to portraits, events, sports, and fine arts, to name just a few examples. They also plan to teach photography.

Jollimore says, “There’s more work in Liverpool than what people think.” She says people from the area already go to Halifax for some services Take One offers and they have no problem with expanding their territory.

“We’re from Calgary so we’re not afraid of driving.”

Anderson adds, “We’re also good at what we do.”

Jollimore earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design while Anderson’s background is journalism.

Their first event in this area was the reunion, where people could purchase photographs on the spot with the use of Take One’s high-quality printer. They also presented a slide show of the event at the end of the reunion.

Jollimore has been in Calgary for eight years. “It was a big city when I got there. Now, it’s just too big, it has too many people, road rage, construction – all the bad things. I was ready to come back home and to be close to my family.”

Anderson says, “My reasons are quality of life.” She says she still likes Calgary, “but it’s the day to day living that’s changing. If you’re not in the oil industry, as each month goes by, there are less benefits to living there.”

She admits, however, she misses her family.

Jollimore adds, “It got to be so busy we couldn’t take advantage of the fun things that were going on. We look forward to going out. We even look forward to going to the grocery story because that’s a social occasion.”

Anderson adds, “I was in rush hour here for five minutes. There were only five or six cars ahead of me.” She smiles.
