July 8, 2007 to July 14, 2007, continued Gerald Thompson Keizer –78, of Halls Harbour, Kings County. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Gerald Thompson Keizer on Thursday, July 12, 2007 surrounded by his family in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Halls Harbour, he was a son of the late Willis and Katherine (Thompson) Keizer. Gerald was employed for 29 years with Hostess Foods, retiring as a field supervisor. He was an avid card and checker player. Gerald’s home was always open to anyone and all were welcome. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by two daughters, Diane (Basil) Simpson, Kentville; Karine Houghton, Halls Harbour; three sons, Grayson (Velma), Halls Harbour; Dean (Karen), Long Beach Road; Girvan (Cheryl), Halls Harbour; a sister, Edna Chesler, Kentville; a brother, Harold (Barb), Centreville; 13 grandchildren, Andy (Lora Boutilier) Quinn, Kentville; Matthew (Sarah Frank) Quinn, Kentville; Adam Simpson, Kentville; Natalie (Loni Shevkenek) Keizer, Bear Canyon, Alberta; Jason (Anne Martell) Keizer, Fort St. John, British Columbia; Tyson (Melanie Robertson) Keizer, Halifax; Lyda (Kelly) Lee Keizer, Long Beach Road; Ryan Houghton, Oren Houghton, Dustin Keizer, Daren Keizer, Tim Keizer and Craig Keizer, all of Halls Harbour; six great grandchildren, Joshua Atwell, Kennedy Shevkenek, Sheldon Shevkenek, Hazen Keizer, Jaden Keizer and Cohen Lee; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Adele Kaizer; a sister, Annie Fife; a daughter, in infancy; a grandson, James. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 15, 2007. July 8, 2007 to July 14, 2007, continued SHERIDAN, Joan Agnes - 85, Nictaux Falls, NS, passed away suddenly, Thursday, July 12, 2007 in Nictaux Falls, NS. †Born in London, England, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Annie (Rogers) Rawle. Joan served with the W.R.C.N.S. in Newfoundland during the Second World War. She was a member of the Nictaux United Baptist Church, past member of the church choir, member of the church craft group, the Women’s Missionary Society and a past member of the Nictaux Fire-ettes. Joan enjoyed her computer, loved to garden and knit, but most of all she dearly enjoyed and loved her family. Joan is survived by daughters, Judy (Mike) Upward, Saint John, NB; Heather Sheridan (Sheldon Crawford), Victoria Vale; sons, Warren (Linda McGrath), Annapolis Royal; Wayne (Marie); Keith (Wendy) and Kevin (Janice), all of Nictaux South and Tony (Brenda), Margaretsville; grandchildren Lisa & Mandy; Michael, Heather & Melissa; Trisha; Josh & Jesse; Kyle & Kristie; Emily, Amanda & Katy; 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Born on July 7, 2007, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, he was a son of Stephen and Jackie (Brown-Canton) White, Kentville. He is survived by a brother, Lucas; grandparents, Claude and Jannette White, Bedford; Joanne Metzler, Kentville; great-grandmothers, Ellen MacFarlane, Bedford; Viola Metzler, Kentville; five cousins, Alex, Alicia, Katelyne, Jack and Connor; several aunts and uncles. July 8, 2007 to July 14, 2007, continued Minas, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Toronto, he was a son of the late Arthur and Isabelle (Laing) Reid. He served with the Canadian Armed Forces for 25 years, including 17 years with the Black Watch, 2 years with the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry, and the remainder with the Royal Canadian Regiment. During his time with the armed forces, he also served in Vietnam for seven months and Germany for three years. He was later employed at the Kings County Correctional Centre for over 18 years. He enjoyed traveling and watching sports on television. He is survived by his wife, the former Peggy Schofield; three daughters, Heather (Lawson Millett) Reid, Coldbrook; Theresa (Ken Blanchard) Reid, Centreville; Lori (Jeff) Keizer, Coldbrook; a son, Ian (Marian), Kentville; a sister, Marilyn (Don) Franks, Toronto; five grandchildren, Ashley, Matthew, John, Jenna and Keeley and two great-grandchildren, Emma and Jacob. He was predeceased by a sister, Lorna Bradbury; a granddaughter, Carleen Marie Reid. Visitation was held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2007 with a Royal Canadian Legion service held at 7:00 p.m. in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. July 8, 2007 to July 14, 2007, continued Terry Leland Newcombe – Born in Canning, NS, Terry grew up in Kentville and later moved to Toronto, ON. His last 18 months were spent in Courtenay, BC. He had an entreprenerial spirit and was always the optimist. Ever the storyteller, Terry enjoyed sales, fishing, boating, watching golf, baseball and wrestling. Terry was predeceased by his brothers Reginald and Ron and his spouse of 25 years, Laurie Nyce. He is survived by sons Rick (Carrol), of Mississauga, ON., Robert (Marsha) of Courtenay, BC and daughter Wendy of Courtenay, BC, 6 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter, 2 nephews, cousins and many friends. There will be no service by his request. Donations in Terry's name may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
July 8, 2007 to July 14, 2007, continued DOYLE, Denise J.—51, of Vogler’s Cove, Lunenburg County, passed away peacefully at home on July 12, 2007. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, she was a daughter of Walter and Jean (Fairgrieve) McKay of Toronto. Denise immigrated to Canada with her family in 1958 and grew up in Toronto. Denise raised her children in Ottawa where she met her soul mate and moved to Iqaluit for some adventurous years before settling in Vogler’s Cove. Mother, Wife, friend and reality TV watching aficionado, Denise or “D” stepped over regrets - her wings were wide. Family was her passion; acting and singing her joy and her partner in crime her muse. “D” looked cancer in the eye and battled it with her spirit and soul. Everyone she touched will remember her vibrant animated personality marked by her infectious smile. Denise is survived by her husband Greg; daughter Elizabeth Lusk; son Cameron Lusk (children of Kenneth Lusk) both of London, ON; sisters: Fiona (Jack) Miller and Alice (Barry) Power, both of Toronto and brother Walter of Toronto as well as several loving nieces and nephew. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A memorial service was held Wednesday, July 18, 2007. Born in Yarmouth on May 18, 1929, he was a son of the late William Henry and Eva Frances (Post) (Powers) Hamilton. He was a handyman all of his life. He enjoyed woodwork, painting, and mowing lawns, among other things. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by sisters, Jean Stewart, Stewiacke, Colchester Co.; Dorothy Wile (Daniel) Martock, Windsor; brother, Douglas Powers, Oshawa, Ont., along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Ella; brother-in-law, Frank, and nephew, Douglas Kutsogotiz (Connecticut, U.S.A.); stepfather, Leslie Hamilton; brothers, Bill and Joe Powers. Remains were resting in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Visitation was Sunday from 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home. Funeral service took place Monday, July 16, at 2 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Dennis Leamont officiated. Burial took place in Chegoggin Cemetery. July 8, 2007 to July 14, 2007, continued FOLEY-WHITTAKER, Ella - 88, Tidal View Manor, formerly of Chegoggin, Yarmouth Co., passed away July 13, 2007. Born on August 22, 1918 in Manchester, England, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Leah (Dyson) Whittaker. Ella was employed by Nova Scotia Tourism for over 30 years, working at the Celtic Lodge in Cape Breton and later as manager of the Nova Scotia Tourist Bureau in Yarmouth. She was an active member of the Progressive Conservative party. Ella had a great fondness for all animals. She really enjoyed spending her summers at her cottage in Island Pond. She is survived by sons, Gary (Gayle) Williams, South Ohio; Roger (Diane) Williams, Hamilton, Ont.; brother, Howard Whittaker, Chegoggin, Yarmouth Co.; grandsons, Greg (Sarah) Williams, Middleton; Robert (Erin) Williams, Deerfield, Yarmouth Co.; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Ty. She was predeceased by her husband, William Foley; brother, Albert Whittaker Jr., and son, Ronald Whittaker. A private family service will take place in Chegoggin Cemetery at a later date. July 8, 2007 to July 14, 2007, continued Joan Elizabeth Andrews – We mourn today the passing of a most courageous, compassionate and formidable soul. J.E (Chipman) Andrews, of Kentville, passed peacefully in the evening of Saturday, July 14, 2007 at Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born March 7, 1926 in Tupperville, she was the only child of the late Thomas Handley and Elsie (Black) Chipman. Joan was a proud Infirmary nurse from the class of 1948 who worked at the Halifax Infirmary, Colchester Community Hospital and the Lillian Fraser Memorial in Tatamagouche. Upon retiring from nursing she relocated to Kentville with her second husband and began an 18 year career at the Kentville Library. Joan was a strong supporter of the Friends of the Kentville Library and their vision for a new facility. Joan was a very active and outgoing person who never met a stranger. She took an interest in and enjoyed people of all ages. In Kentville she was a member of the I.O.D.E., the Kentville Gyrette’s, the Duplicate Bridge Club and was a former member of the Ken-Wo Golf and Country Club. While raising her busy family and living in Truro she was active with the Truro School Band Auxiliary and in the United Church. Joan was an avid life long reader who enjoyed the theatre and knew her Shakespeare. She very much enjoyed the Acadia Concert Series and particularly vocal music. She herself was a talented pianist and as a young woman gave many people joy with her singing. She was predeceased by her second husband, Alex Andrews. She is survived by her five children, Joanne (Mike) Chamberlin, Santa Cruz, California; Thomas A. Flemming, Tatamagouche; Susan Flemming, Toronto; Rose Flemming, Bridgetown; Robert L. (Louise) Flemming, Bella Bella, British Columbia; six grandchildren; one great-grandson. Also survived by her first husband, Albert Flemming, Truro and her cat, Tiggy. She will be deeply missed by special friends, Sue Mullen and Ed Cooke of Kentville. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A private family interment will take place at a later date in the Round Hill Cemetery. Family flowers only, by request.
