July 8, 2007 to July 14, 2007 KENNEDY, David A. —72, of Mersey Point, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, July 8th, 2007. Born in Dartmouth, he was a son of the late James and Myrtis (Hopkins) Kennedy. David began his working career at the Halifax Shipyards in 1952 as a plate fitter’s helper with the Canadian Frigate Program and completed the course in 1957. He transferred to the Joiner Shop that same year and completed the program in 1960. David transferred to the Engineering Department in 1961 where he performed drawings for the outfitting section and was promoted to Outfitting Section Leader in 1965. In 1968, Dave took on the responsibility of outfit superintendent during the construction of Sedco 709, an off shore, eight leg drilling rig and from 1970 to 1978, he became Outfitting Section Leader in the engineering office responsible for all outfitting drawings and requisitioning of all outfitting materials for the construction of Sedco 471 and off shore drilling ship. Following this project, Dave accepted the position of Marine Superintendent with Steel and Engine Products Limited in Liverpool and was responsible for all ship repair and refit activities. In 1987 Dave was promoted to the position of Plant Manager and in the spring of 1999, he was promoted again to the position of General Manager, a position he held until his retirement in December of 1999. In January of 2000, Dave accepted a position with Deep Sea Trawlers, a division of Clearwater Fine Foods as a Project Manager for the construction of two 43M Scallop vessels in Navia, Spain. He worked in the Lunenburg office until April of 2000, and then was in Spain for the completion of the project in 2003. In February 2004, he was contracted by Mersey Seafoods to oversee the conversion of a stern trawler to a scallop vessel at Steel and Engine Products Limited, which was completed in June of 2005. Since that time, Dave had been involved in small consulting jobs. Dave was a Sunday School Superintendent for several years at Saint Luke's Church in Westphal and was on the Board of Directors for the Liverpool Kiwanis Club for eight years. He is survived by his wife, the former Norma Mossman; sons: David (Cathy) of Dartmouth; Christopher (Roberta) of Bridgewater and Steven (Brenda) of Liverpool; grandchildren: Jennifer, Daniel, Shauna, Christine, Melissa and Krista and great granddaughter Haley; brothers, Robert (Betty) and Douglas (Cathy) both of Dartmouth. He was predeceased by a brother Donald and a granddaughter Samantha. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers Funeral Home, Liverpool. A Celebration of David's life was held Thursday, July 12, 2007 in Trinity Anglican Church, Liverpool, Lay Minister Judy Cross officiated. Burial was in Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Liverpool. Born in Shelburne County, he was the son of the late John and Marguerite Bartlett. Survived by his wife, Rose Marie Cecelia (Paul) of Tidal View Manor; daughter, Rowana Cecelia (Daniel) Harper of Maine; son, Stoney Bartlett of Maine; grandchildren, Ernie Harper, Florida; Daniel Harper Jr., Alaska; Jerry Harper, Florida; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by son, Cody. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 12, from 12 noon until funeral time at 2 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home Chapel, Yarmouth, Rev. Robert Baker officiating. July 8, 2007 to July 14, 2007 BRAWER, Rita Ruth - Of Yarmouth and Brooklyn, N.Y., passed away peacefully with her children by her side on July 8, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on March 5, 1917, in Yarmouth, she was a daughter of the late Leonard and Beatrice (Nelson) Shane. Rita was very involved with community activities. She was a member of Agudath Achim Society in Yarmouth. She was president of her Haddassah, and past president of various Jewish organizations in Brooklyn, N.Y. Rita is survived by daughter, Marsha (Jere) Turner, New Hampshire; son, Carl (Monica), Key West, Fla.; and brother, Dr. Aubrey Shane, Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry and her brother, Dr. Arthur Shane. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in Ritchie Memorial Chapel with Cantor Ari Isenberg of the Shaar Shalom Congregation of Halifax officiating. Loved father of Scott (Bonnie) of Bassanno, Alberta, Brenda (Chris) Wheeler of R.R.#3 Durham and the late Cathy Caldwell. Dear brother of Robert (Marie) of Ingersoll, Barbara (Allan) Ball of Embro and Pat Johnson of Tavistock. Wilf will be sadly missed by grandchildren Stephan and Stacey Caldwell, Ryan and Tyler Weaver, Adam Wheeler and Krista Elley and great grandchildren Shelby Caldwell, Katie and Courtney Terryberry, Kirstin and Xzyler Weaver, Sydney, Branden and Tyson Wheeler and Hayley Elley. Predeceased by his sister Betty Lunn. July 8, 2007 to July 14, 2007 Gordon Albert Burgess – 72, of New Minas, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Upper Dyke, Kings County, he was the son of the late Archibald and Priscilla (Gaudet) Burgess. He had been employed with Canada Foods, Kentville and with Joseph Fritz in both Windsor and New Minas for many years. He later managed the Old English Tavern, Kentville. He spent many hours picking apples and in the blueberry fields, both planting and picking. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him, especially three of his granddaughters, Melissa, Jenna and Calla. He is survived by his life long partner, Geraldine Pynch, Grand View Manor, Berwick; two daughters, Joan (Charles) Newcomb, New Minas; Catherine Eye, Kentville; two step sons, Donald (Marion) Pynch, Sackville; Robert (June) Pynch, Halls Harbour; two sisters, Mary (Gordon) MacKay, Mississauga, Ontario; Patricia (Paul) Ross, Kentville; four brothers, Richard (Sis), Ontario; Cecil, New Brunswick; Peter, Kentville; James, Upper Dyke; an aunt, Hilda Burgess, Kentville; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a step daughter, Sandra Doucette; step son, Laurie Pynch; son, Richard Pynch; five brothers, Kenneth, Wilfred, William, John and Paul. There was no visitation by family request. Born in New Mills, New Brunswick, he was a son of the late James and Velma (Sealy) Cooper. He had been employed with Ultramar and retired with 35 years of service. He enjoyed spending time with family, socializing, playing golf and curling. He was a member of the Ken-Wo Golf and Country Club and the Glooscap Curling Club. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Flo Gordon; a daughter, Joanne (Sandy) Van Blarcom, Kentville; a son, Michael (Marianne), Yorkton, Saskatchewan; two sisters, Judy (Bruce) McKeil, Tide Head, New Brunswick; Jean Dimock, Riverview, New Brunswick; two brothers, Glen (Noreen), Wheaton Settlement, New Brunswick; David (Donna), Oromocto, New Brunswick; three grandchildren, Brennen Cooper and Aaron and Ashley Van Blarcom; an aunt, Jean (John) Steeves and an uncle, Andy (Peggy) Sealy, both of Moncton, New Brunswick; many nieces and nephews. July 8, 2007 to July 14, 2007 THOMPSON, Robert “Bob” Daniel – 69, of Torbrook Mines, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2007 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Torbrook Mines, he was a son of the late Robert J. and Florence B. (Rutherford) Thompson. In his early years, he had a brief career with the RCMP and the Canadian Military. In later years he was self employed as a woodsman. Bob was an avid reader and outdoorsman and was known as a hard worker who had a dry sense of humor. Bob is survived by his wife, the former Joyce Babich; daughter, Lynn Croft, Dartmouth, NS; son, Ward (Verilea Warren), Nictaux; sister, Virginia Ward, Tremont and several nieces and nephews.
