On paper

An exhibition of mixed media art by Kentville artist Rachel Reeve will launch a new series of summer art exhibitions by new and emerging artists in Kings County. The exhibition runs until August 5 at Legge Gallery, located in the Charles MacDonald House Museum in Centreville, and is co-ordinated by the Alliance of Kings Artists. The exhibition will feature about 20 works that include printmaking, collage and mixed media.

The series of images share common ground in the artist's travel through Europe and Asia. The collage work includes actual elements of 16th century handpainted wallpaper from the famous Swedish convent, Notre Dame de la Maigrauge.

Jenn Grant, with opener Tanya Davis, will be in concet at the Mermaid Theatre Loft, Windsor July 19 at 9 p.m.,

On the Verge

The line up for a jazz festival at the Wolfville eatery is now set

Thursday, July 19 - Sillan & Young (jazz/ pop). The group has been described as a unique blend of acoustic folk and contemporary urban music.

Friday, July 20 - Language Arts. Classical guitarist Kristen Cudmore and double bassist Michael Vaughan formed the duo in May of 2004. They were a big hit at Christmas time when they played the Verge.

Sunday, July 22 - Ever popular singer/ songwriter Dave Carmichael has slotted Wolfville into his busy schedule - because he loves the town.

Some Enchanted Evening

Soprano Andrea Jeffrey, tenor Derrick Miller and pianist Simon Docki are giving a concert July 23 in the ATF Presents series.

Jeffrey, a Nova Scotia native, and Miller, from New Brunswick; plan an unforgettable recital of beloved songs and duets from favourite musicals and operettas. They will feature works by Bernstein, Gilbert and Sullivan, Andrew Lloyd Webber and many more.

The duo sang to sold out audiences last summer at the Nova Scotia Tattoo. Both trained in Toronto and sung professionally for a number of years.

Miller is a graduate of Acadia University who went on to a graduate degree in voice at the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford in Connecticut. Since, he has toured and performed all around the world in opera and musical theatre. He now resides in Toronto, where he performs regularly with the Canadian Opera Company and Opera Ontario.

The 8 p.m. concert will be at the Festival Theatre in Wolfville. Tickets at the Acadia University Box office: 542-4242 or 1-800-337-6661. Ticket price is $15 adults and $10 for students.

Hear Bob Wiseman, Bob Snider

July 20 at 8 p.m., Bob Wiseman and Bob Snider will entertain at the Al Whittle Theatre in downtown Wolfville.

Tickets are on sale at the JustUs Cafe and at Landmark East schhol, 542-0548; $13 advance and $16 at the door.

Art change over

The Valley Regional Hospital Gallery, sponsored by the hospital auxiliary, changes its art July 26.

The registration and hanging of new works will take place after that, with a new featured artist every second month.

Jam dance

The next Wolfville Community Jam Dance Video project is set for July 21, 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at St. John's Parish Hall, Main Street, next to Wolfville Fire Department.

All ages and abilities are welcome. This is a barrier-free opportunity to be part of creating a new song, and then make a music video.

Arts camps

The Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, north of Canning, is holding summer art academies that strike a balance between learning and honing artistic skills and the fun that comes with summer camp.

Professional artists are instructors, dedicated to help emerging, teenaged artists learn more about visual arts, theatre or film. Beginning July 29, teens from across Canada gather at Ross Creek for unbeatable instruction, artistic as well as personal confidence, friendships and memories.

The centre is holding its renowned drama camp for children ages eight to 13 from July 22 to 27.

Professional performers will lead children aged eight to 13 in workshops. Sherry Lee Hunter, a performer who was a founding member of the internationally acclaimed Jest In Time Theatre Company and now teaches at Halifax Dance, will help them develop new skills and excitement. Jammin' on the mountain

The Port George Country Jamboree is Saturday, July 28.

Just over the North Mountain from Middleton, the event features 11 hours of live country music, 200 flea market tables, fantastic food and fun for the kids.

Fundy Film

Fundy Film continues its Summer Series with The History Boys, which follows an unruly class of bright, funny history students as they prepare to apply to Oxford and Cambridge. The stage version swept the 2006 Tony Awards only months after its opening in New York.

Seek mentor

Mentorship for emerging writers

The Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia invites applications for apprentice positions in the 2007/08 mentor program for emerging Nova Scotia writers.

This program is designed to address the needs of emerging writers who are committed to their writing and creative development.

Writers must provide a maximum 10 page sample of work and answer a series of questions.

Applications must be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side of standard paper, unstapled; and received by the Writers' Federation by Sept. 14 to Mentoring at the Fed, WFNS, 1113 Marginal Road, Halifax, NS B3H 4P7.
