Dave Paterson, Bowater Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, visited Bowater Mersey Paper Company Ltd. in Brooklyn on July 6 to present newsprint mill and woodlands employees with the Directors’ Safety Award for working 250,000 consecutive hours without a recordable incident.
A recordable injury is one in which the person requires treatment beyond simple first aid.
Part of the Directors’ Award is a $5,000 U.S. donation to a community charity chosen by the winning site. Bowater Mersey selected the Queens General Hospital Foundation to receive the gift.
At a safety celebration held at the mill on Friday morning, Queens General Hospital Foundation Fundraising Chair, Robin Hemeon accepted the cheque from Paterson and Bruce Nunn, Vice President and Resident Manager, Bowater Mersey.
In the past two years, Bowater Mersey employees have achieved the best safety performance in the company’s 78-year history. The newsprint mill currently leads its class in the 2007 Safest Mill in Canada competition.
