July 1, 2007 to July 7, 2007 continued Ladny Richmond – passed away peacefully at home in Wolfville on Wednesday morning after a long struggle with cancer. Ladny will be missed by hundreds of people, dogs, cats, crows, squirrels and others whom she has cared for during her 63 years in this life. She has devoted her last 25 years to the town of Wolfville, the Annapolis Valley, and the Buddhist and Quaker communities, keeping us conscious of the most important aspects of living, and giving selflessly of her large spirit of compassion. Ladny was born Lynda Pauline Pomeroy Magwood during the bombing of London in 1943. She grew up in England, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), and Florida. She attended Barrington College, Cornell University and the University of Hawaii where she studied zoology. She worked as a horse trainer, a lumber jill, a zoologist in the Australian wilderness, and a jackaroo on an Australian ranch. She traveled in Canada and England before going to Thailand in 1968, where she began her life-long Buddhist practice and trained to become a Buddhist nun in the Therevada tradition. Later she joined her mother, Paula Magwood, and grandmother, Marjorie Parsons, in Florida where she met her first husband, Paul Richmond. In Florida she worked as a lifeguard and swimming teacher, a foster mother, and ran a day-care from her home. Her daughter, Jenny, was born in 1972. Paul died in 1977, so she and Jenny moved to Tweed, Ontario to join her brother Gary and family. It was there that she began to study with the Shambhala (Tibetan Buddhist) community founded by the Vidyadhara, Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche who chose Nova Scotia as its spiritual centre. Ladny moved to Wolfville in 1982, where she was joined in 1985 by her husband, JP Huang, her best friend since Cornell University. She was instrumental in the formation of the Wolfville Area Animal Group (We are All Animal Guardians), the Annapolis Valley International Community Centre, the Festival of Cultures, the Wolfville Raging Grannies, and the Kings County hospice project. She worked as a palliative care volunteer for the Victorian Order of Nurses. She cared for many children and elderly people. Since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 she faithfully stood at the peace vigil in Wolfville every Saturday until weeks before her death. She volunteered for Project Ploughshares, Tools for Peace, the New Democratic Party, the Council of Canadians, the Maritime Natural Foods Co-operative, and the host family program for international students at Acadia University. She organized countless events for Buddhists and Quakers. At her request, donations in her memory can be made to the Annapolis Valley Friends Meeting and/or the Wolfville Shambhala Meditation Group and mailed to 40 Hillside Ave. Wolfville, NS B4P 2B2. Ladny was also a student, friend and supporter of Zen Buddhism. Ladny had an open spirituality which gave her a great strength. She was greatly influenced by the open heart and mind of the Mahayana, the simplicity and lack of pretension of Therevada, and the attention, care and natural discipline of Zen. She encouraged the practice of all three traditions. Ladny was pre-deceased by her Canadian father, Garth Magwood. A memorial service was held on Sunday July 8 at 1pm at Denton Hall, Acadia University, followed by a reception at the Wolfville Lions Hall on Elm Ave. Friends were invited to bring finger foods.
