Roger Joseph Paquin – 86, of Waterville, Kings County, passed away on June 27, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Montreal, he was a son of the late Stanislaus and Alice (Pothier) Paquin. He leaves a son, Réal, Ontario; a daughter, Suzanne (Roger) Sevigny, Coldbrook; brothers, Lucien, and George, both of Montreal; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a large number of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Antoinette; his sister, Blandie Leigh; his brothers, Treflé, Jean and Rolland; his granddaughter, Carlee Sevigny. Cremation has take place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. SURETTE, Gertrude Alma – 99, Dartmouth and formerly of Ste. Anne-du-Ruisseau, Yarmouth Co., passed away Thursday June 28, 2007 in the QE II health Science Center. Born July 5, 1907 in Massachusetts, U.S.A., she was the daughter of the late Esley and Emily “Minie” (Jacquard) Babin. She worked as a housewife. She was a woman of great compassion who cared very deeply for her family. She knew what serving others was all about. Her passion was to make sure that all her family would meet again in haven some day. She lived in Eel Brook until her husband passed away then she moved to Dartmouth to live with her daughter and son in law and their family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A great big thank-you to the home care support workers who came to her home regularly to give her some personal care and share a few funny stories. Surviving are daughter Simone (Rodney) McGregor, Dartmouth; Brothers; Camille (Marjorie) and Leodore, both living in U.S.A.; grandchildren; Michael, Victoria BC; Joanne, Moncton; Dionne (Sean), Dartmouth; Derek (Kate) Calgary, Alb.; Rodney (Shawn) Head Jeddore; Derek (Sherry) Waverly; eleven great grandchildren; one great great grandson; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband Amedee Surette; a son Kenneth; brothers; Gordon, Edward “Eddie”, Gerard, Louis, and Jacob; sisters; Esther and Celestine. Visitation was held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Sunday July 1, in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert St. Yarmouth, prayers at 8 pm. Funeral mass was held at 2 pm Monday July 2, from St. Anne’s Catholic Church, St. Anne-du-Ruisseau, Father Crepin Khonde officiated. Interment will followed in the parish cemetery. GUDGER, Margaret Jean "Marg"- age 83, of Windsor, formerly of Mosherville and Dartmouth, passed away on Friday, June 29th, 2007, at the Windsor Elms. Born on October 11th, 1923, in Tangier, Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late John and Katherine (Langille) Jennings. In her earlier years while a resident of Dartmouth, Marg worked for several years at the Oceanview Manor Nursing Home, and upon moving to Mosherville, was employed at the Masonic Home, and later at the Windsor Elms. She was very involved with the St. John Ambulance, where she volunteered at numerous sporting events and at the Hants County Exhibition. She was a former member of St. Luke's Church, Dartmouth and a member of St. Stephen's Church, Stanley, where she was also a choir member of both churches. Marg is survived by a son, Dennis (Nancy), Beaver Bank; a daughter, Cindy (Ron) McClair, Mosherville; grandchildren, Joseph (Shelley) Gudger and Matthew Gudger, both of Beaver Bank; Roger (Jen) McClair, Grande Cache, Alberta; Ellie McClair (Joe), Hinton, Alberta; great grandchildren, Alicia, Jordan, Jessica, Tyler and Ethan; sister, Dora Clark, Falmouth; brother, Charles "Chuck" (Lois) Jennings, Bala, Ontario. Besides her parents, Marg was predeceased by her husband, John Frederick Gudger (1998); sisters, Violet Strum, Mary Gudger, Lottie Langille and Olive Patterson; a brother, Avery Jennings. SAYAT, Alexander Dorneo - 40, of Rockport Maine, U.S.A., and formerly of Yarmouth passed away suddenly as a result of a single motor vehicle accident near Moncton, New Brunswick. Born December 19, 1966 in Regina, Saskatchewan, he is the son of Dr. Gregorio Lacopia and Maria Asuncion “Siony” (Dorneo) Sayat, Yarmouth. Alexander worked as the Accounts Payable Manager in his wife’s pediatrics practice (Rockport, ME), as well as being the Retirement Administrator at Merrill Lynch (New Jersey) and the Customer Service Representative at State Farms Insurance (Rockland, ME). Alexander was a graduate of Acadia University with a Bachelor of Science degree as well as Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He was an avid outdoorsman, collected antique muscle cars and memorabilia, and had an interest in photography. Alexander belonged to the Rough Grouse Society, and was an active member of his church, Our Lady of Good Hope, Camden, ME. He is survived by loving wife of 11 years, Dr. Edna Regala Sayat; he was a proud father to his two children Gregory (age 7) and Lauren (age 5); a brother, Jorge Dorneo (Alessia Torromeo-Sayat) Sayat, Montreal, Quebec; sisters, Dr. Cynthia Nova (Eric) Sayat-Geis, Toronto, Ont.; Elizabeth Christine Sayat, Toronto, Ont.; paternal grandmother, Florencia Lacopia Sayat, Halifax; two nieces, Sophie (age 4) and Olivia (5 months); paternal uncles Meynardo (Angelita) Sayat, Philippines; Rolando (Maria Luisa) Sayat, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; paternal aunt, Myrla (Amado) Foronda, Halifax Nova Scotia; maternal aunt, Gracita (the late Vicente) Olea, Philippines. GOW, Gordon— 81, of Liverpool, died Friday, June 29, 2007 in Queens General Hospital. Gordie was born in Saint John, NB. He graduated from Queens University in 1949 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and worked at Bowater Mersey Paper Mill until his retirement. Gordie was a past member of the Mersey Band, the Liverpool Kinsmen Club and the Liverpool Golf and Country Club. He was an honourary member of the VG Nursing Class of ‘48. Gordie will be remembered for his “campfire songs”, his passion for playing the clarinet and great sense of humour. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Etta; son Jim (Patsi), York Harbour, NL; daughters: Heather, Duncan, BC; Pam (David), Halifax, NS; Sherri (Gerry), Waverley, NS; 13 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; sister Isobel Smith, Maine. He was predeceased by sisters Rose MacIntyre, Natalie Evans, son-in-law Burl Whittaker. In keeping with Gordie’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A private family graveside service will be held in Trinity Anglican Cemetery. AMIRAULT, Glenn E. — 49, of Liverpool, Queens County, died Friday, June 29, 2007 in Queens Manor, Liverpool. Born in Liverpool, he was a son of Marion (Johnson) Amirault and the late Earl Amirault. Glenn was a dockworker for Bowater Mersey for over 20 years. He loved hunting, fishing in Kedji Park, canoeing, beagles and ice caps from Tim Horton’s. He was a former Boy Scout Leader and Beaver Leader and was a Montreal Canadiens fan as well as a former broomball player. He is survived by his wife, the former Donna Keans; son Kirk of Liverpool; sisters: Patricia “Pat” (Doug) Lohnes, Yvonne (Paul) Clarkin, Christine “Tinie” (Giffy) Fralic, all of Brooklyn, Angie (Walter) Croft of Western Head; brothers: Byron (Janet) of Middle Sackville, Bernard (Stephanie) of Brooklyn, Chris (Bev) of Yarmouth, Stephen (Vicki) of Liverpool. CHURCH, Minnie Josephine - 88, Union Corner, Hants Co., passed away unexpectedly Saturday, June 30, 2007, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Poplar Grove, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Foley) Burke. Minnie was a member of the Windsor Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and she was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Minnie is survived by her children, Raymond (Mary), Newport Corner; Mary (George) Hauer, Union Corner; Fred, Union Corner; David (Lois), Union Corner; Dell (Cheryl), Brooklyn; Reid (Sandra), Brooklyn; and Susan (Bernie), Dunlap, Falmouth; daughter-in-law, Diane Church, Windsor; sister-in-law, Winnie Betten, Gypsum Mines; 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; half-sisters, Marie Anthony and Betty (Basil) MacAllister; half-brothers, Charles Jr. (Eleanor) Burke and Gary Burke; also several nieces and nephews. Minnie was predeceased by her loving husband, George Howard Church (February 2007); son, Robert “Bob” Church; daughter-in-law, Sharon Church; son-in-law, Jim Williams; sisters, Anne Willet and Chris Baker; brothers, William, Fred and Earl Burke. Eleanor Florence MacLeod – 91, of Kentville, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2007 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late John and Annie (Legge) Fitch. She had been employed for many years with the former Paramount Cinemas in Kentville. She was a member of the United Church of St. Paul and St. Stephen, Kentville, where she taught Sunday School. She was a member and Past Noble Grand of St. Eulalie Rebekah Lodge, Kentville and was a Past President, holding many offices in the Past Noble Grand Club. She is survived by three daughters, Jean Higgins, Ottawa; Joan (Donald) Cyr, North Alton; Annie (Edward) Cyr, Woodville; three brothers, Arthur (Vera), Robert (Muriel) and Frank (Freda), all of Kentville; eight grandchildren, Jack Higgins, Terry Higgins, Andrew (Kathy) Higgins, Joanne (Stephen) Hall, Allan (Karen) Cyr, Heather (Gary) Cyr-Baxter, Alicia (Dean) Debreceni and Jason Cyr; 14 great-grandchildren, one great great grandson; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth MacLeod, Halifax; several nieces and nephews. WHYNOT, Maxine P. — 67 of Liverpool, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2007, at Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Bridgewater she was the daughter of the late Everett and Dora (Whynot) Oickle. Maxine worked for Mersey Seafoods and was also a member of the Canoe and Camera Club. Maxine is survived by her husband Sydney "Buster"; daughters Doreen (Leo) Smith of Liverpool, Darlene (George) Hatt of Lunenburg, Donna (Michael) Arenburg of New Canada and Marjorie Cosby of Milton; sons, Syd (Midge Balcom), Mark (Louise) both of Milton and Stephen (Joan Wamboldt) of Liverpool; sister Brenda (John) Cunningham, of Milton; brothers, Robert of Lockeport, Gary (Deborah) and Ronnie (Shelia) both of Milton; 10 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, and a number of great grandchildren and step great grandchildren. Elsie Jane Gavel (nee Kehoe) passed away peacefully at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in Barry's Bay, on June 25, 2007, at the age of 85.
Elsie was predeceased by her husband Jack, by her parents, Edwin Frank Kehoe, and Elsie Jane Killam and by her siblings, Don, Victor and Annie. Elsie will be fondly remembered by her brother Percy, and his wife June of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; and by her many nieces & nephews and her friends, particularly Gayle Weichenthal and her family, of Palmer Rapids. At Elsie's request, there was no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place at Elmwood Crematorium in Belleville, with private interment of her remains in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Bancroft, at a later date. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Baragar Funeral home.
