There was no shortage of individual and team accomplishments to celebrate as Northeast Kings Education Centre handed out its annual year-end athletic awards June 4.
NKEC had a particularly stellar year in 2006-2007, with six provincial team championships and another nine provincial banners won by individuals in team sports such as badminton, cross-country and track and field.
With that in mind, it was no surprise that there were co-winners in three of the four Athlete of the Year categories.
Nathan Coffill and Ian Brown were co-winners as Senior Male Athlete of the Year. Both were valuable members of the provincial D-2 champion hockey team, and shared the hockey MVP award. Coffill also won provincial titles in soccer and badminton.
Joelene MacIntyre and April Rand were co-winners as Senior Female Athlete of the Year. Both girls were members of the provincial D-2 champion soccer team, and each participated in several other sports as well.
Similarly, the choice for Junior Female Athlete ended up in a tie between Laura Roy and Britany MacArthur, the latter a provincial cross-country champion (and regional track and field champion) and the former a team leader in basketball and badminton.
James Floyd, who played golf, hockey and softball, was picked as Junior Male Athlete.
Devin Tetlow and Jacobi Vanderweit were the choices for NKEC Titans Sportspersons of the Year, recognizing their all-round excellence. Katherine Power, Mason Foote and coach Jenn Healy represented NKEC at the NSSAF Celebration of School Sport.
