White Point Golf Club born in early 1930s
Mersey Paper Company Limited began production of newsprint in 1929. That meant employment for many Queens Country folk; and an influx of mill executives and the heads of the various departments from other paper mill towns in Ontario, Quebec and elsewhere.
At this time, Colonel C.H.L. Jones arrived in Liverpool and became the company's first President and General Manager.

B.J. Waters was the Assistant General Manager. These men, along with other members of the executive staff, were golfers and it was not long before they acquired property at White Point to construct a nine-hole golf course.

It was common knowledge at the time that the company sponsored and paid the bills for the operation of the course. In those days the club professional toiled on the course in the summer and worked in the Mill Stores in the winter months. Tom Tonks was the first to come here under that arrangement.

John Jackson followed him. Then Jim Dumeah, who had come to Nova Scotia from Ontario in the 1950s to pitch for the Kentville Wildcats in the Halifax and District Baseball League, and his son Richard took over the professional's job and carried out that role for over 25 years.

Things have changed in the world of golf professionals. Today, the Pro must be a teacher, marketing manager, and accountant, know his sods and grasses, how to operate a pro shop and be amiable and learn the art of treating all members alike.

I think the current club professional and manager fits all the above criteria. Dave Kemshead was born July 25, 1961 in Georgetown, Ontario, where he graduated from that city's high school and went on to obtain a business degree from Sheridan University. His wife Colette is a native of Cape Breton and they have two sons, Ryan and Logan.

He started his golfing career at age 16, shagging balls and cleaning clubs for the Georgetown Golf Club pro. He started playing golf at three years of age when he learned to hit a golf ball with a sawed-off hockey stick. His first golf club, at the age of five was a cut off wood. His mentor was the Canadian golfer Bruce Harper, who taught him all facets of the business of operating a pro shop.

Young Kemshead's golf game progressed quickly under Harper's expert eye and as an amateur he captured 10 Ontario Senior championships and was his home course champion for many years. At age 16 he placed fifth in the Ontario Junior Championships.

He turned professional at age 18 and is a member of the Canadian Professional Golf Association, the American Professional Golf Association and the Ontario PGA.

Dave, who has signed a contract with the club, and his family have become involved in the community. Dave is highly involved in hockey, for example.

His program for juniors at the Liverpool Golf and Country Club is exceptional and boasts 100 boys and girls; a most ambitious program.

The Kemshead family - a welcome addition to our Queens County family.
