It has been 100 years since the Halifax and Southwestern Railway blazed a trail through Shelburne County.
The now long-closed railway was a lifeline for county residents for decades and Fred Greenwood, who heads a local committee, would like to find a way to honour the many people in the area who served with the railway.
Greenwood made a presentation to Shelburne Municipal Council on Monday night asking for permission to mark the 14 former train station sites in Shelburne County from Sable River to Woods Harbour.
He was also asking for financial assistance to place a plaque at a significant former railway site in honour of the former service.
Trains started running in Shelburne County in 1907. Passenger service ended in 1977 and the last freight train pushed its way through in 1981.
During the presentation Greenwood lamented the lack of any significant marker about the county’s railway history.
Greenwood’s requests will be forwarded to the municipality’s grants committee.
