Somerset school’s May 25 Community Day Celebration was honoured with a special visit from Nova Scotia’s Lieutenant Governor Mayann Francis.
Francis dropped into the event before her stop at Central Kings, where she presided over the annual presentation of service medals to Grade 11 students within the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board.
Each year, Somerset school invites its community partners to a breakfast and assembly, where they are saluted for their role in contributing to school success.
“Some communities seem to have lost a sense of belonging,” said principal Heather Morse, “but our community is thriving because it is based on respect, teamwork, leadership and academics.”
Morse explained to Francis the Community Day Celebration is all about giving thanks to “those who help us create a caring environment in which children can achieve their full potential.”
As the first lieutenant governor to visit the school in its history, Francis’s arrival was heralded by a bagpiper and a colour party from Berwick’s Ortona 69 Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Students packed the multi-purpose room to hear her address the importance of community.
Growing up in Cape Breton, Francis said community was an important foundation in her life.
“There was a spirit of looking out for one another. That spirit is alive in this community.”
Francis acknowledged Somerset school for promoting peace and respect, “something that needs to permeate the province.” She also acknowledged the school for engaging veterans in the life of the school.
“They fought for freedom and democracy so I can soar, so you can soar.”
Individuals, community groups and parents were also thanked for their involvement at the school and their commitment to see “no children are left behind.
“Everybody has a stake in education and respect for learning leads to many other wonderful things.”
