Fire department news
THREE IN TWO HOURS
Three is a crowd; things come in threes. These are a couple of sayings that have been around for years and last Tuesday the Yarmouth Fire Department responded to three emergencies in an hour and ten minutes, believing in the above.
Starting with a 11:27 call for a vehicle fire on Herrington Avenue where fire destroyed a van, followed by a page for an MVA at 12:52 p.m., requesting the rescue jaws. Upon arrival of Engine 4 the driver had been removed from the car and the jaws were not needed. This response was near the Frenchy's store along the airport stretch.
At 1:37 p.m., before Engine 4 had returned to quarters a page for a fully involved house fire at 31 Starrs Rd., brought Engine 1 and 4, Units 14, 26 and 27 to the intersection of Brunswick and Starrs. Volunteers who had returned to quarters after the MVA were still at the station and made a quick run. The one and a half storey frame home was badly damaged, despite the quick work by firefighters. There were no injuries but several animals died.
LAKE VAUGHAN STRAWBERRY SOCIAL
The department will be holding their annual strawberry social on Saturday, July 7 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This includes strawberries, sweets, a cold plate, tea and coffee; all of this for the price of $10 per person. For advance tickets or further information contact Gordon Raynard at 740-3018.
EAST PUBNICO MONTHLY MEETING
The regular monthly meeting of the East Pubnico Fire Department will be held on May 30 at 7:30 p.m. at their fire hall.
DICK SHAPIRO
The death of Dick Shapiro last week undoubtedly saddened many around the Yarmouth area. Probably very few knew of his feelings regarding the Yarmouth Fire Department. His memory of fires that had occurred over the years was better than most and the interest he maintained and shared was appreciated.
Dick will be missed not only by the members of the Yarmouth Fire Department but by his many friends who visited his place of business on Main Street. May he rest in peace.
DATE IN HISTORY
June 21, 2003 - What was considered as suspected arson caused considerable damage to the outside and fire, smoke and water damage inside to Bonda Textile at the corner of Parade and Pleasant Streets. The 12:30 a.m. page held the Yarmouth Department at the scene for two and a half hours.
MARITIME BOWLING TOURNAMENT
It appears that interest in the Maritime Firefighters Bowling Tournament is losing steam. Only eight teams appeared in Riverview N.B., Yarmouth and Carleton from this area. Yarmouth was not able to field their usual strong team, but Carleton who has been one of the top teams over the past few years were runners up. Hopefully interest will pick up as younger firefighters come along.
