Bessie B. Taylor - 89, Berwick, Kings Co., passed away on Wednesday May 23, 2007, in the Evergreen Home For Special Care, Kentville. Born in Scotts Bay, Kings Co. she was a daughter of the late Alvin and Eva (Huntley) Steele. Bessie had graduated from the Provincial Normal College, Truro and had taught school in Melvern Square, Scotts Bay, Grand Pre and 20 years at Central Kings Rural High School, Cambridge Station. Teaching was her life, wanting everyone to be educated. After marrying and having her two children, she continued her education at Acadia University and received both her B.A. and B.Ed. She continued on with her studies attending almost all of the Maritime Universities, including U.N.B., Dalhousie, St. Anne’s, Mt. Allison, Mount Saint Vincent & St. Francis Xavier, never losing her quest for knowledge and completed her education with an additional B.Sc. and Masters Equivalent Program. She earnestly shared her education and self discipline with her students to the benefit of all. She was a lousy driver but she always got where she was going. She participated in many organizations, including the Berwick Baptist Church MacPherson Auxillary, Allied Youth, the Faith Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church, Berwick, and the Berwick Seniors. Her love of gardens and flowers stands to her testament to this day, with glorious tulips in bloom, to be followed soon by daffodils, peonies, lilacs, magnolias, lilies and many more. She delighted in visits from her former students and cherished the memory of all her former colleagues. Her life was joyfully extended after the death of her husband by loving caring friends and caregivers like, Dianne Jones, Doug Pelton & Bonnie Baker, without whom she would not have thrived. Surviving are her daughters, Dianne (Perry) Jackson, Scotts Bay; Janet MacInnes, Halifax; grandchildren, Lesley (Malcolm) Stevens, Steven Jackson, all of Kentville; Craig (Amanda) MacInnes, Edmonton, Alberta; Christine MacInnes, Toronto, Ont.; great-grandchildren, McKenzie & Matthew Miedema; Evan & Keegan Stevens; Jenna Jackson, all of Kentville; Ceilidh MacInnes, Edmonton; brother, Homer (Fran) Steele, Scotts Bay; sisters, Julia (Reid) Sangster, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; Gloria Greene, Blomidon, Kings Co.; numerous nieces & nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ronald S. Taylor; brothers, Cecil, Frank & Lorris Steele; sister, Alice Barnett; brother-in-law, Bert Greene. Visitation for Mrs. Taylor was held from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. on Saturday May 26, in the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, N.S., B0P 1E0, (902-538-9900), from where the funeral service was held 1:30 p.m. Sunday May 27. Rev. Murray Shaw officiated. Victor Vasileski – 88, of Kingsport, Kings County, passed away Friday, May 25, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on May 10, 1919 in Boston, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late Adam and Sophia Vasileski. He traveled extensively as he worked for Pan American Airways. He took voice lessons in Miami, Florida and while stationed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he had the teaching services of a retired American opera star, Madame Roxie King Shaw. He returned to Miami and for three seasons, sang with the Miami Opera Guild. In 1951, he began a 16 year career with the first television station in the state of Florida (WTVJ). Following his television career, he moved to Nova Scotia and taught music in the Yarmouth school system and later lived in Wolfville and Kingsport. He is survived by his second wife, Heather Jordan-Vasileski; three daughters, Cynthia (Michael) Lauritsen, Florida; Kathleen (Wayne) Nicholson, Centreville; Victoria Heart, Toronto; four grandchildren, Sara (Sollie) Solomons and David Westbrook, Nathan and Tabitha Nicholson; a step-daughter, Janiene Miner (Leroy Williams), Kingston; a step-son, Craig Miner, Kingsport; step-granddaughter, Alice Williams; two great granddaughters, Sabrina and Lauren Solomons. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Irma; a brother, Edward; twin siblings, in infancy. Cremation took place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Robert Billings officiated. Bernice Sabina Phinney – 86, of Kentville, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Barss Corner, she was a daughter of the late Dennis and Lila Bell (Wagner) Ramey. She was a member of the Salvation Army and had been employed at the former Palmeters Country Home, Kentville. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She especially enjoyed family get-togethers, no matter what the occasion. She also enjoyed cross-word puzzles. She is survived by three daughters, Marena (Marshall) Jones and Maxine (Donald) Bezanson, both of Kentville; Malita (Robert) Garber, Bridgewater; three sons, Malcolm, at home; Mervin, New Minas; Marshall (Patricia), London, Ontario; a sister, Erna (Lloyd) Stevens, Northwood Manor, Halifax; ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a good friend, John Rafuse; son-in-law, Ronald Winkelman, Canning; daughter-in-law, Jackie Phinney, Kentville; two sisters-in-law, Beulah Ramey, Barss Corner and Beulah Ramey, New Germany; a brother-in-law, Ervin Dorey, Chester. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald; a sister, Gloria Dorey; four brothers, Lloyd, Mervin, Donald and Carroll; a son-in-law, Gordon Adams. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2007 in the Salvation Army – Kentville Citadel, Majors Bond and Marina Jennings officiated, assisted by Pastor Thelma McLeod. Marguerite Victoria Gardner — (1914-2007) Passed away at her residence Wednesday, May 23, 2007. It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of our beloved Aunt, Great-Aunt, and Great-Great-Aunt. She was the oldest daughter of the late Ivan and Mary Gardner, Liverpool. She was predeceased by her sister, Leila Gordon. She was a pharmacist and worked in Liverpool and also in Dartmouth, at the Nova Scotia Hospital. She is survived by her two nieces, Sylvia Stevens of Cole Harbour and Brenda Johnson of Bridgewater; her great-niece, Shelby Janes of Porters Lake; her great-nephew Adam Stevens of Cole Harbour; her great-great-nephew, Brandon Stevens; and her great-great-niece, Brittany Stevens. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held in Liverpool at a later date.

Adell Marie Schofield - 77, Wolfville, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, NS. Born in Kentville, Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late Aubrey and Vera (Adams) Burgess. Adell is survived by her loving husband Parker, children, Gary Graves (Jackie), Noel; Wanda Paquin, Calgary; Randy Schofield (Cathy), Wolfville; Dena (Wade) Bowerman, Red Deer, Alberta; grandchildren, Steven, Rhonda, Andrea, and Tammie. Also surviving are brothers Harvey Burgess, Fredericton; Nelson (Joan) Burgess, Shilo, Manitoba; and Mervin (Ilsa) Burgess, New Minas, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters Elsie Burgess, Ann Harris, and brothers Aubrey Burgess, Garfield Burgess, and Howard Burgess. Cremation has taken place. No funeral service was held at Adell's request. A private family Graveside Service was held with Rev. Gary Manthorne officiated. DOUCET, Rose Alma – 91, South Belleville, Yarmouth Co., passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, May 23, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born July 2, 1915 in Amirault’s Hill, she was a daughter of the late Avite and Elizabeth “Liza” (Muise) Landry. She loved to entertain family and friends with her piano playing. She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Comeau, South Belleville, and Dolores Bourque (Martin K.), Haverhill, Mass.; son-in-law, Lubin d’Entremont; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John Doucet; two daughters, Dolores, in infancy, and Jeannette d’Entremont; a sister, Jeanette (Zackery) Dulong; brothers, Andre, Francis in infancy and Louis (Christine). Visitation took place from 7 to 9 Sunday, May 27, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral mass took place at 2 PM, Monday, May 28, from Saint Anne’s Catholic Church, Ste. Anne-du-Ruisseau, Father John MacPherson officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. WALSH, Bertha May - Yarmouth, passed away May 24, 2007, in The Adelaide Respite Inn. Born in Millview, P.E.I., she was a daughter of the late Henry and Eva (Waterman) Mutlow. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She moved to Charlottetown at an early age, graduated from Prince of Wales College and taught in Murray Harbour, Cape Traverse and Albany. She later taught at Arcadia Consolidated School. She was married in 1935 and lived in Albany until moving to Arcadia, Yarmouth Co., in 1938. Bertha was a member of Arcadia United Baptist Church and served as Church Clerk for many years. She was a member of the Arcadia Women's Institute and was made a Life Member some years ago, and in 1998 received a 50 year Long Service Award. As well, she served on the Provincial Executive of the Nova Scotia Women's Institute Association. She was a past member of the Arcadia Silver Seniors. In 1968 she joined Opal Rebekah Lodge No. 45 in Yarmouth, was a past Noble Grand and was awarded her 25 year pin in 1993. She was a past member of the Yarmouth PC Women's Association of Nova Scotia. Bertha loved her flower gardens, enjoyed reading, cards and getting out among people. She had a special talent for public speaking and writing. Over the years, she wrote many plays, skits and poetry for community and family events. After her retirement from teaching, she and her husband spent a number of winters in Largo, Fla., and always spent their summers at their much loved cottage in Stanhope, P.E.I. Bertha is survived by son, Ian (Remy) Walsh, and granddaughter, Raquel Walsh, all of Dartmouth; nephew, Dr. Neils Hansen, Ontario, and her Prince Edward Island "just like grandchildren", Andrew, Sarah and Matthew Stewart. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Norman; daughter, Sylvia (Walsh) Lanton; sister, Olive Hansen, and brother, Gordon Mutlow (both of Prince Edward Island). Bertha will be greatly missed by family and friends. Remains rested in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, where visitation was held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday, May 26, and where funeral was held Sunday, May 27, at 2 p.m., Rev. B. Densmore officiated. Burial in Arcadia Cemetery. Reception followed at 2 Park St., Yarmouth, for a time to meet the family. Jeffrey Albert Garber -19, Somerset, Kings Co. passed away Friday May 25, 2007, as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Born in Berwick, Kings Co., he was the wonderful son of his proud parents, Donald and Brenda (Shepherd) Garber, Somerset. Jeff was a graduate of Central Kings Rural High School, Cambridge Station, as well as a recent graduate of the Heavy Construction Program at the N.S.C.C., Dexter Institute, Akerley Campus, Dartmouth. He was proud to be starting a career as the operator of a portable asphalt plant for Dexter Construction. Jeff loved life, which he shared with an older brother whom he looked up to, Jospeh Donald Garber, Grand Prairie, Alberta and twin sisters he adored, Tracey Jayne Garber, Prince George, B.C.; Jennifer Eileen (Jason Ringuette) Garber, Bonnyville, Alberta. He will be missed by grandparents, Robert & Eileen Shepherd, Black Rock, Kings Co., Faye (Bruce) Chase, Windermere, Kings Co., Ethel Garber, Lake Paul, Kings Co.; “special” grandparents, Gordon & Florence Carter, Somerset. He is survived by uncles and aunts, David (Sherry) Shepherd, Donald (Beth) Shepherd, Linda (Derrick) Ettinger, Darrell (Patti) Shepherd, Mike (Mary) Garber, Annette (David) Pulsifer, and several cousins. He was predeceased by grandfather, Albert Garber; Uncle Earl Garber. Jeff loved to polish his truck, play with his dog Rudy and go fishing. He was respected by those he worked with and was loved very much by his family & friends. He will always be remembered for his quick wit and ready smile. Vivian Huntley, age 81, of Windsor Forks, Hants Co., passed away onFriday, May 25, 2007, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born on February 19, 1926, in Windsor Forks, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late James and Myrtle (Smeltzer) Begin. Vivian was a member of St. Michael's Anglican Church, Windsor Forks, and also the Church Guild. At the age of 14 she was a knitter for Nova Scotia Textiles. She was Caretaker of the Windsor Forks District School and a Homemaker for the Town of Windsor. She is survived by sons, Harold "Wayne" (Judy), Falls Lake; Russell (Lorraine), Falmouth; Michael (Anna), Truro; daughter-in-law, Sandy; grandchildren, Darlene Hancock, Paul Humphreys, Jenna-Lee Huntley, Danielle Huntley, Jessica Huntley, Brandon Huntley; great-grandchildren, Bailey Hancock, Morgan Hancock; sister, Sybil (Sue) Swinamer, Three Mile Plains; brother-in-law, Tom Bassett; several nieces and nephews.
