May 20, 2007 to May 26, 2007 Paul Alexander Bennett – 42, of Thailand and Kentville, Nova Scotia, passed away, at the home of his parents in Kentville, surrounded by the love of his family, on Sunday, May 20, 2007. Born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia on July 28, 1964, he was the first-born son of Robert “Bob” and Charlene “Bunny” Bennett, Kentville. He graduated from Kings County Academy, Kentville and attended Acadia University, Wolfville, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Chemistry and Mathematics. After working for a few years he returned to Acadia University to earn his Bachelor of Education degree. Having grown up in Kentville, like his brothers, Paul played baseball and hockey, became an official in those sports and also coached minor baseball. Paul travelled and worked around the world gathering many friends along the way. The last twelve years or so he worked in South Korea, China and mostly in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He was most recently teaching physics and chemistry at Assumption College in Bangkok. Thailand has become his "home" and where his ashes will be returned to complete his cycle of life and rebirth. Although Paul was only 42 years old when he died, he had a lifetime full of travel, adventure, friends and love. Paul is survived by his wife, Supon "Sook" (Chaliewchalad) Bennett, Surin, Thailand and their unborn child; a daughter, Willow Bennett, Ottawa and her mother, Candace MacKay; two brothers, Geoff “Woody” (Monique), Whitehorse, Yukon and their children, Mary and Michael; Sean (Heather), Falmouth, Nova Scotia and their children, Alex and Jack (“Jackie” to uncle Paul); three uncles, Frank (Sheila) Simons, Kentville; David (Claudine) Bennett, Whycocomagh; Ross (Glenda) Bennett, Reserve Mines; an aunt, Ceci Thomson, Wolfville; many cousins. He is also survived by his in-laws and extended family members in Thailand. He was predeceased by paternal grandparents, Alex and Mary Bennett, Glace Bay and maternal grandparents, Charlie and Midge Simons, Kentville. In celebrating Paul's faith in Buddhism, a memorial gathering for family and friends, with a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 26, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. May 20, 2007 to May 26, 2007 SWIM, Helen Lucinda of Newellton, Shelburne Co passed away Sunday May 20, 2007 In Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Newellton on October 20, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Leora(Smith) Newell. Helen was a member of the New Horizons Seniors Club, former member of the Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed bowling and was involved in all activities of the Newellton Community Hall. Helen truly enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Wentzell, sons, Rickey (Louise), Kevin (Carolyn), Craig (Iseisa), all of Newellton; brothers, William, Herbert, Newellton, sister, Bessie, Stoney Island; grandchildren, Stacey, Melanie, Marty, Kristen, Ashlee, Andy, great grandchildren, Brendon. Joshua, Jessica, Benjamin, Paige; step grandchildren, Logan, Rylie. She was predeceased by brothers, Douglas, Leroy, Victor; sisters, Effie, Elizabeth, Edna, Lorraine in infancy. May 20, 2007 to May 26, 2007 CRAFT, Marie Elise - 97, Yarmouth, died May 20, 2007, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born July 17, 1909, in Meteghan, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Lucy (Gaudet) Comeau. She was a shoe model in the United States, an avid jigsaw puzzle and bingo player. She lived most of her adult life in the United States and in 1994 moved back to Nova Scotia. She is survived by sisters, Octavie Tobin, Halifax, and Regina Comeau, Meteghan. She was predeceased by her husband, Rodney Craft, in 1988; sisters, Marie Adele Wilson and Gertrude Belliveau; brother, Camille Comeau. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. As per Mrs. Craft's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Burial will take place at a later date. May 20, 2007 to May 26, 2007 SHAPIRO, Lorne Richard “Dick” - 60, Yarmouth, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2007, at home. He was the loving and devoted only son of the late Maisie and Gerald Shapiro. Dick was best-known as owner of Louis Shapiro Ltd., and dedicated himself completely to his store and his customers. He held a keen interest in the Yarmouth Fire Department and enjoyed watching sports, both baseball and hockey. A funeral service was held on Friday, May 25, at 5 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, Rabbi David Ellis officiated. Burial took place in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery. May 20, 2007 to May 26, 2007 VanTassel, James Lawrence – 74 years old, passed away May 20 after a long battle with cancer, with his wife and children by his side. Jim left Digby at a very young age and went to Dawson Creek, B.C. where he married and raised a family. Jim is the son of the late Howard VanTassel and the late Robena (Rice) of Digby. He is the brother of the late Richard Vantassel of Winnipeg; the late Florence Corkum of Halifax; the late Joan VanTassel of Digby. Surviving are brothers Norman of Winnipeg, Neil of Dawson Creek, B.C.; sisters Donna Kranstz, Burlington, Ontario, Sharon Hayes and Pauline Trangredi of Digby. May 20, 2007 to May 26, 2007 MUNROE, Jessie Lydia - 86, Windsor, passed away peacefully Monday, May 21, 2007, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. She was the daughter of the late Everette Mansfield and Hilda (Frail) (Mansfield) Grimm, and stepdaughter of the late Fred Grimm. Jessie enjoyed crocheting, knitting and watching the Blue Jays play baseball. She will be sadly missed by her husband of 65 years, Cecil, Windsor; daughter, Sharon (Richard) Barkhouse, Lower Sackville; grandson, Rick (Angie) Barkhouse, Smith Falls, Ont.; granddaughter, Heather Barkhouse (Dave Rogers), Dartmouth. May 20, 2007 to May 26, 2007 ROCKWELL, M. Jean, age 91, of Windsor, formerly of Mount Uniacke, Hants County, passed away on Monday, May 21, 2007, at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born on November 21, 1915, in Ardoise, Hants County, Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Jane (Collins) Davis. Jean loved nature, was an avid gardener and card player. Her greatest enjoyment was her family. She was a life long member of the Church of the Holy Spirit, Lakelands. She is survived by her sons, Larry (Mary) Rockwell, Mount Uniacke; Kenny (Gail) Rockwell, Mount Uniacke; grandchildren, Brian (Leona) Rockwell, Enfield; Wayne (Donna) Rockwell, Ottawa, ON; Karen (Craig) Swatuk, Oakville, ON; Annamarie Rockwell (Darryl Hebb), Mount Uniacke; Tanya (Gary) Blackburn, Belle Valle`, ON; 10 great-grandchildren, Lauren Rockwell, Andrew Rockwell, Benjamin Rockwell, Hannah Rockwell, Thomas Rockwell, Samuel Swatuk, Kate Swatuk, Tannamarie Blackburn, Garrett Blackburn and Wyatt Blackburn; several nieces and nephews. Jean was the last surviving member of her immediate family. May 20, 2007 to May 26, 2007 Fyke Offinga – 78, of Coldbrook, Kings County, formerly of Trenton, passed away on May 22, 2007 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, after a short illness. Born on February 7, 1929, in Haarlem, The Netherlands, Fyke was the daughter of the late Johannes and Jean Schiltman. She was married in The Netherlands and then immigrated with her husband to Canada in 1952 through Pier 21 in Halifax. Fyke and her family resided in Ontario before moving to Trenton, in 1972. After her husband’s death 12 years ago, Fyke moved to Coldbrook, until her recent illness. Fyke is survived by her five children, daughters, Grace (Maurice) Pearce, Trenton; Hilda (Jeff) Hunter, Fall River; Joyce (Ron) Delorey, Cambridge Station; sons Paul (Janice) Scarborough, Ontario; Mark (Trish) Cambridge, Ontario, seven grandchildren, Keith and Jennifer Delorey, Karla, Kirbey, and Scott Hunter, Heather and Kenda Offinga; brother, Henk (Riet), The Netherlands; sister, Lena (Bill) McKee, Stevensville, Ontario. Fyke was predeceased by her beloved husband, Lorne A. Offinga. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. The funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2007 in the Christian Reformed Church, 118 Oakdene Avenue, Kentville, Pastor Michael Veenema officiated. May 20, 2007 to May 26, 2007 Shirley Irene Hazelton - 64, New Minas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Ida (Fenton) Smith. Shirley enjoyed playing cards with friends and family, and the many people she met through the Avon Company. She adored her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and the time she spent with them was very special to her. Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by brother William Smith in infancy. Shirley is survived by her husband, Sydney Hazelton, New Minas; daughters Debbie Rines, Alberta; Doreen (Ron) Williams, Ontario; Beverley (Donnie) Dominey, Waterville; Tammy Hazelton, Kingston; son Kenneth Rines (Angela Balcom), Coldbrook; 13 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is sister Margaret Smith, Lunenburg, and brother Donald Smith, New Minas. The Memorial Service for Shirley was held Saturday, May 26, at 4:00 pm from Port Williams Baptist Church with Rev. David Ogilvie officiated. The interment followed at Fox Hill Cemetery, Port Williams. There was a reception following the burial at the home of Kenneth Rines, 2463 Loretta Avenue, Coldbrook, NS. Everyone was welcome to join the family for a time of reflection and fellowship. Visitation took place on Friday, May 25 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and from 7:00 - 9:00 pm at Serenity Funeral Home & Crematorium, 1212 Parkway Drive, Port Williams, NS. May 20, 2007 to May 26, 2007 Bernie Owen Lutz – 85, of Torbrook Mines, NS, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at home. Born in Lake Paul, NS, he was a son of the late Lloyd and Lois (Oickle) Lutz. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of Berwick Ortona Branch #69 Royal Canadian Legion. Bernie was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved camping and dancing. He retired after 20 years as a truck driver with Irving Oil, prior to that he drove for Thompson’s Transfer, Middleton. He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Chute; daughter, Gail (Max) Gates, Kingston; sons, David (Cheryl), Waterville; Jim (Susan), Wilmot; Darrell (Sharon), Tremont; step-daughter, Debbie, Bridgetown; sister, Myrtle (Doug) Mewton, Lake George; brothers, Aubrey (Nellie) Lutz, Lake Paul, Calvin (Edith) Lutz, Nictaux; grandchildren, Allen, Michael, Karen, Robert, Natalie, Theresa, Kathleen, Jerry, Charlene, Michael, Greg, Tim and Tamara; step-grandson, Lee and 15 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Madeline Lewis; sister, Maxine Nelson; brothers, Medford and Judson.
