2007 Tri-County Lieutenant Governor’s Medal presentations made
Tri-County Regional School Board recipients
On Thursday, May 24, the Honorable Mayann E. Francis, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, was at Barrington Municipal High School to present 15 deserving students from the Tri-County Regional School Board with the prestigious Lieutenant Governor’s Medal.
The Lieutenant Governor’s Medal is presented to one male and one female Grade 11 student from each high school who maintains a high academic standing and is dedicated to the betterment of school and community life.
The Tri-County Regional School Board also recognizes congratulates all of the students who received this prestigious award. The Board recognizes their hard work & dedication to both their academics and community. “The drive and determination that these students exhibit will serve them well as future leaders in our region, our country, and the global village,” says Tri-County Regional School Board chair Faye Haley. “I am very proud of them.”
From Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School:
Jillian Marie Cottreau: With an outstanding average of 96 per cent, Jill has earned top honors and received many awards throughout school. She is on student council and a keen participant in winter carnival activities, Pentathlon, and dress-up days. She is a member of the Yarmouth Y Whitecaps Swim Team. This year she tried varsity volleyball and the squad placed second at the NSSAF championships. During the spring she played for the Black Ice Volleyball Club, which won silver medals at championships. She is a math tutor, volunteers at the local YMCA teaching young children competitive swimming, and is active in the youth group at her church. She recently earned her Lifeguard Nationals. She is a well-rounded individual who excels in athletics and academics and contributes to community life in many ways.
Taylor William Doucette: Taylor is a gifted, dedicated athlete who participates and excels at many team and individual sports. He is one of the most valuable players on the varsity soccer squad and played varsity basketball for many seasons. He is a member of the Yarmouth Y Whitecaps Swim Team, is an accomplished distance runner, and is a varsity cross country and track and field star with regional titles and top three placings at NSSAF Provincial Championships throughout junior and senior high school. He excels at triathlons and as a junior qualified and was selected to compete at the national level. He is a spirited member of the student body at YCMHS, always involved in winter carnival activities, Pentathlon and intramurals, and often variety and talent shows. This year he was chosen to be one of 10 students to participate in an exchange with a high school from East Boston. His perseverance in athletics and fine academic standing make him a very deserving recipient.
From Drumlin Heights Consolidated School:
Carrie d'Entremont: Carrie has maintained an overall average of 93 per cent in Grade 11. She is a member of the Drumlin Heights Spirit Committee whose main goal is to increase school spirit, and has participated in the Living Christmas Tree Production with the Yarmouth Wesleyan Church for the past three years. This summer she will once again volunteer her time at a summer Camp in Berwick. She also finds time to play on the basketball team.
Robert Stewart: Along with a good academic standing, Robert's volunteer experience and passion for historical and cultural preservation is impressive and includes: five years volunteering for the Cape Sable Island Historical Society and is a contributor for history research regarding shipwrecks; four years with the Cape Sable Island/Centreville Christian Education Building; two years for autistic children; being recognized by the RCMP in 2003 as a Barrington volunteer, and is involved with the genealogical society, local churches, Roseway Manor, local summer youth groups and raising money for new computers.
BARRINGTON MUNICIPAL HIGH SCHOOL
Kaitlyn Anne Harris: Kaitlyn is an in-school mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters, a representative for Student Council, and a member of the Special Events and anti-bullying committees, as well as the Youth Action Team. She is active in several sports such as soccer, basketball and track and field. Kaitlyn has won several awards for her athletic skills including Most Valuable Player on her soccer team and basketball team for two consecutive years. In her free time she enjoys horseback riding, swimming, and traveling.
John (Jack) Patrick O’Connor: Jack volunteers in his community as a coach for youth soccer and hockey. An excellent student, he has maintained a 90 plus average throughout his high school years. An All-Star Defenseman, he plays hockey for the school team and is proud to say that he has been a member of three provincial championship school and community hockey teams. Jack also plays on the school baseball, soccer and track and field teams, and is a member of the Youth Action Team. He enjoys automotive work and electronics as hobbies.
DIGBY REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Kelly Thompson: Kelly maintains a high academic standing ranking near the top of her grade class. She is very active in her high school community including Envirothon, Yearbook, and the Social Justice Club. Kelly also actively contributes to her community as a Ranger with Girl Guides of Canada and volunteering at a local seniors' residence. In addition, Kelly is a peer tutor and plays softball.
Chris Hersey: Chris is an avid athlete having competed in hockey at the AAA level and in track and field, while maintaining an impressive academic standing. He is also a member of student parliament. In addition, Chris was an ambassador at the Governor General Awards in 2006, a youth delegate for the Canadian Student Leadership Conference, and the recipient of a Community Service Award.
ISLANDS CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL
Renee Elizabeth Frances Titus: While maintaining a good academic standing and being an honor student since grade seven, Renee is proof that the spirit of volunteerism is alive and well in the community. She is a member of the school track and field team, the school advisory council, and students' council. Renee has represented the school at RCH Conferences, Young Women's Conferences, and at the Wind Hill Conference, and this summer she will attend the Gulf of Maine Summer Institute. Her community activities include being a member of the Volunteer Jr. Fire Department, Fundy Ground Search & Rescue Team, as well as working for the local Tourist Bureau and Recreation Association.
Ethan Archie Malcolm Titus: An outstanding academic and community-minded individual, Ethan has participated in students' council for three years and has been an honor student since grade seven. Ethan has worked supporting Remembrance Day events for several years. He has been involved with track and field, cross country running, and badminton; a sport where he has been named as MVP. Ethan's sense of good sportsmanship extends to promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles. He completed a coaching course and has been refereeing elementary and secondary sporting events for the past two years. Ethan enjoys helping his school and community to be better places in which to work and live.
LOCKEPORT REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Robyn Atwood: Robyn has always maintained a high academic standing. In grade seven she was awarded the Class Spirit Award and has been a member of the Greenwave Honors Club since entering LRHS. She has been the Class Representative for Student Parliament since grade seven; is an active member of the Yearbook Committee; member of the basketball, soccer, and track and field teams; and volunteers "working the clock and doors" at home basketball games. Robyn's community involvement included the Canadian Cancer Society during their annual Daffodil Campaign, the Canadian Heart & Stoke Foundation's "Big Bike Ride", the Terry Fox Run, and Roseway Manor, and she is currently a student volunteer for the Big Brother/Big Sister Elementary Mentoring Program.
ST. MARY'S BAY ACADEMY
Rachel Susan Mullen: An honor student since junior high, Rachel helps other students. At the high school level, she has been involved in making voice-recorded readings for students who are following adaptations in their courses and at the elementary level she is involved in the "After School Physical Activity Program". In her community she is involved in a church youth program and participates with other young children's programs. These interests will take her to a mission in Washington, DC this summer. During major school sporting events, Rachel can often be seen operating the electronic scoreboard and documenting sports data during varsity games. Having an interest in Music, the piano is the instrument which Rachel loves to listen to and play.
Justin Marshall: Justin has been an honor student since junior high. Teachers have often described Justin as a valuable asset in the classroom as he is willing to help any students who may be encountering difficulties. Justin is often seen working and assisting teachers with various school projects. School sports are a passion for him. As a team player Justin is a strong volleyball player, and he is valued and respected by all his school colleagues. It will not be long before we will be seeing Justin in the sports field training after school for the upcoming track and field season. Justin is also involved in church ministry and volunteers with the maintenance of his church.
SHELBURNE REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Laura Theresa Keeler: Laura is committed to sharing her passion to lead a physically active lifestyle with other youth. While maintaining an academic average of 92.3%, Laura has been actively involved with the Health Heart Action Team. She is also a member of Shelburne's Community Use "On the Move Leadership". Both programs allow Laura the opportunity to inspire youth to become and stay active. Her other extracurricular activities include participating in track, badminton, softball, basketball, and soccer. As captain for the soccer team, she led the senior girls to become the Division 3 Provincial Champions. This summer she is looking forward to participating in the Dartmouth College Soccer Camp in New Hampshire. Laura hopes to receive a sports scholarship to attend university where she will pursue studies in Sports Medicine.
Logan Alexander Harris: Logan is a valued member of his school's soccer and badminton teams and a class representative on student council. He is involved in "On the Move Leadership" through Shelburne's Community Use Program. Logan serves on the Sports Committee and for the past three years he has volunteered with the local Recreation Department organizing both youth sports and day camps. He encourages community members to stay active during the winter season by organizing Take the Roof off Winter Events. Logan successfully completed a Legion Leadership Training Camp in Truro last summer. He maintains an 87.3% academic standing and following graduation would like to complete a Kinesiology Program in hopes of becoming a Sports Conditioning Specialist.
