News from area fire departments
ALARM AT HOSPITAL
A 10:30 p.m. alarm and three pages for manpower last Tuesday May 15, kept Yarmouth firefighters busy for approximately an hour and 15 minutes at the Yarmouth Hospital. Because of smoke showing on ward 4 south, patients were removed from the area by staff and firefighters, as others searched for the problem. Eventually a malfunctioning light was discovered and removed. There were no injuries or damage to the ward.
FIRE SERVICE TRAINING PRESENTATION
On Monday May 28, at 7:30 p.m. David Burnet, a senior officer with H.R.M. fire service will be at the Yarmouth fire hall. He will be looking for information regarding training in the province and its future needs. All local fire departments are encouraged to attend and will be able to take part in discussions as well as present ideas that will benefit this fire area.
FORMER FIREFIGHTER’S WIFE DIES
We sadly announce the death of Betty Newell. Betty was the wife of Brownie Newell; he was on staff for many years. Our sympathy to her family.
ISLANDS AND DISTRICT FIRE DEPARTMENT
When fire badly damaged the Islands and District fire hall and a number of pieces of equipment on Nov. 13, 2006, it put them out of service, Even though other nearby departments were ready and able to step up. Since then repairs have been on going and a good number of fire departments have come to the Surette's Island department with equipment. One of the latest is a 1979 International 625GPM pumper, a gift from H.R.M. with cash donations as well as members have been working hard and expect to be back in full service in a very short time.
DATE IN HISTORY
May 24, 1898 a 3 p.m. fire in the home of George R. Earl, Bond Street, caused three alarms from box 14. The building and contents were ruined. About $2500 insurance on building and contents. The owner had left for a drive to Tusket Lakes about an hour previous to the outbreak.
UNATTENDED FOOD FIRE
Another case of unattended food being cooked caused some excitement and considerable smoke in one apartment at 76 Main St., last Wednesday, May 16. The 4:17 p.m. page kept firefighters at the scene for a half hour.
