Fred Giffin

In his career, he was assistant mill chemist, then mill chemist, Control Superintendent, Production Manager in 1989 and retired in 1994 as Quality Development Manager and a member of the company's Management Team.

Fred Griffin prepared himself well for his outstanding career by attending Carleton University, Ottawa, in 1964, and the University of Maine in 1965, for Advanced Statistical Methods courses, which were sponsored by the paper industry and Bowater. In 1978, he attended University of King's College for Advanced Management courses, also sponsored by Bowater.

He served on several industry-related boards, including the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association's Environmental Committee, and the Research Direction Board for the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada. During his career, he also wrote and presented several technical papers for industry conventions and trade publications. In spite of an active career at Bowater, Fred managed an outstanding record in this community.

He served a two-year term as a member of Liverpool Town Council, he was president of the Liverpool Golf Club for two years, and served three years as the president of the Liverpool Curling Club. He was a member of the Liverpool Kinsmen club, and is currently a member of K-40 and served that group as president. He also served terms as Chairman of several boards of the Liverpool United Baptist church, including the Board Of Management and Finance, while singing in the men's choir for several years. He was a charter member and served on the Board of the Mersey Hockey League. He was also a charter member and served on the board of the Liverpool Chapter of the Barber Shop chorus group. He also sang in a quartet with Dr. Dave Large, Director, Dennis Grant and Richard Ward.

Believe it or not, but this remarkable man finds time to curl and play golf, and represented the Liverpool Curling Club on five Provincial championship rinks. He also enjoys trout fishing and canoeing on Ponhook Lake, where the family's cottage is located. Wind surfing and walking his three active dogs keeps him in good shape. Bowling was a favourite sport of Fred's and he likes to reminisce about bowling in the mid-1960s in the South Shore Candle Pin Circuit, when his team won the championship at Middleton. Members of that team were Doug Lucier, Roger Rafuse, Jim Dumeah, Frank Leslie and Lew Freeman (who was reputed to be the best one-armed left-handed bowler in Nova Scotia.) Friends will remember that Lew lost his right arm in an accident in his youth.

In Fred's days with the Kinsmen Club, members were active in producing stage shows on a yearly basis. He was responsible for writing the script for a couple of these shows, which were a howling success. Climate Research is an on-going activity with Fred Giffin and he has kept records of the climatic conditions in this area for many years. It is his Number One hobby, and for years he has published his findings and predictions about eight times a year. His accuracy is phenomenal.

Fred was married to the late Margaret Anne Mouzar and they had three daughters, Terri (Frank), Kathy (Ralph) and Linda (Ivan), and five grandchildren, Kailey, Regan, Adam, Jeremy and Caden.

Fred Giffin is a solid citizen of Liverpool and Queens County and always a contributor to the life of the community.
