Director, Annette Burke said the play “Peter Pan” entered the planning stages just after Christmas and rehearsals began in February.
With 40 students cast in the play and five more working on the crew, there are also seven staff members along with parents involved in the production.
Burke said the school normally puts on some “fabulous musicals” but it was not possible this year and a teacher came up with the idea to do “Peter Pan” as a play.
So far it has been going very well and Burke said everyone has been good at showing up for rehearsals, which are usually a couple days a week and some Saturdays.
Although it is a challenge to work with that many students at once, she said they are doing a really great job.
They have doubled up the main characters Burke explained, and each child gets a chance to perform in two shows out of the four.
This is Burke’s first time directing a play, which she said has been a learning experience.
“It’s fun to get to work with them outside of the classroom,” she said. “We’ve got some very talented young people in this school and it’s going to be a good show.”
Peter Pan will be played by Wesley Harding and Gavin Raddall.
Cassidee Kempton and Emma Norman have taken on the role of Wendy and Courtney Whynot and Lilliwyn McGlynn will play Tinkerbell.
Captain Hook will be played by Brandon Johnson and Mitchell Alexander.
The production of Peter Pan, which will be performed by students from Grades 4-6, begins the morning of May 24 with a performance for Dr. John C. Wickwire School and Mill Village Consolidated School students.
A second performance just for the schools will be held the morning of May 25.
Performances on the evenings of May 25 and 26 are open to the public. The shows begin 7 p.m at the Astor Theatre.
Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 dollars for students and can be purchased at the Astor Theatre.
