Edward John “Jack” Salsman – 59, of Kentville, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at home. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Jack and Minnie “Jean” (Spencer) Salsman. He retired from the Canadian Armed Forces with 25 years service having served in five regiments and retiring as a Warrant Officer. He enjoyed spending time at the Legion with fellow veterans and always looked forward to the Black Watch Reunion. He loved country music, going for walks swinging his walking stick and his flower gardens. He is survived by his common law wife, Yvonne Viner; a daughter, Jodie (Chris) White, Kentville and a son, Jack (Laura), Canaan; two sisters, Betty (David Williams) Salsman, South Alton and Helen (Frank) Veinot, Kentville; two brothers, Willard and Robert (Sandra Masters), both of Kentville; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m., Thursday, May 3, 2007 with a Royal Canadian Legion Service held at 7:00 p.m. in the White Family Funeral Home, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 4, 2007, Reverend Robert Billings officiated. Barbara Joan Brewster – 75, of New Minas, Kings County, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, she was the daughter of the late John Conrad and Ruth (Webb) (Conrad) Armstrong. She had been employed for many years as a private home care worker with the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses and also worked with the Community Living Alternatives Society (C.L.A.S.) where she provided in home care for Ed Miller for 16 years. She enjoyed knitting, cooking, flowers, gardening and going for long drives. She is survived by her husband, Osborne Brewster; a daughter, Angela (Doug) Mills, Coldbrook; a son, Tim (Jeanette), Ontario; step-daughters, Elizabeth (Curtis) Simpson, Billtown; Cynthia (Lewis) MacDonald, West Halls Harbour; step-sons, Norman (Laurine) Brewster, Ontario; John, Berwick; Gavin (Karen) Brewster, Coldbrook; Michael (Joyce) Brewster, Centreville; Doug, Bermuda; five grandchildren, Jeanine, Ashley, Peter, Alison and Mike; 14 step-grandchildren and 9 step-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her step-father, John Armstrong. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. A private graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2007 in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Reverend Peter Lohnes officiated. There was also a public reception held at 3:00 p.m. in the vestry of First Cornwallis Baptist Church, Canard, Kings County. ELLIOTT, John Willoughby- 90, Carleton Corner, Annapolis County, (formerly of Halifax) passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, May 1, 2007 at Valley Regional Hospital. Born in Paradise, Annapolis County, he was the son of Murray and Ethel Victoria Elliott. He will be sadly missed by son John Kimberley (Sharon) Red Deer, AB; daughter Tanya Victoria (Doug) Dartmouth; granddaughters Lesley and Ainsley; Charlie the cat, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wonderful wife of 63 years, Betty (nee Ritchie) and brothers Murray (Mack), Rufus, Sinclair and Mathew.†John was an active member of Bridgetown Baptist Church. At the time of his retirement he held the position of Payroll Auditor with Revenue Canada. After retirement John took on the position of fundraising for Acadia Divinity College for the Annapolis Valley area for several years. Since losing Betty in 2005, John has become known as the Marmalade King of Carleton Corner, making orange marmalade from scratch and sharing it with his church family, and his neighbours on a regular basis. He loved to do woodworking making coffee tables and other pieces of furniture for family members and friends. He also took great pride in his property and actively took care of it up until the time of his death. The highlight of his day was to jump in his car and go on drives along country roads up and down the Annapolis Valley. At the end of this his final journey, may he hear “Well done, thou good and faithful servant”. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of John’s Life was held at Bridgetown Baptist Church Saturday May 5th, 2007 at 11 a.m., Rev George Neily officiated. HARRIS, Edna Catherine - 91, Villa St. Joseph du Lac, Dayton and formerly of Little River Harbour, passed away Tuesday May 2, 2007 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born September 11, 1915 in Comeau’s Hill she was the daughter of the late Edward “Eddie” and Jennie (Fitzgerald) Jacquard. She was a member of Saint Gabriel’s Catholic Church. Surviving are foster son, Wayne (Janice) Jacquard, Halifax; foster daughter Helen Jacquard, Yarmouth, grandchildren Christina Jacquard, Ottawa, ONT; Marc Jacquard, Halifax. sisters Isabelle (Francis) DeViller, Yarmouth; Dorothy Hubbard, Oromocto, NB; Virginia Chisholm, Cohasset Mass, USA; Juliana (Dolly) DeViller, Tewksbury, Mass, USA; brothers; Stanley, Vancouver; George, Comeau’s Hill; besides her parents she was predeceased by husband Joseph Stillman Harris; a sister Madeline Deveau; brothers; Charles “Charlie”, Everette, Joseph, Louis, Levi and Stephen. Visitation was held Thursday, May 3, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 with prayers at 8pm, both in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert St. Yarmouth. Funeral mass was held Friday, May 4, at 2PM from Saint Gabriel’s Catholic Church, Comeau’s Hill, Father Wieslaw Papuga officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. HILFIKER, Theodore Paul "Ted" - 58, Summerville, passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 2007. Born in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a son of the late Rev Wharren and Carol (Koepf) Hilfiker. Ted was a man of many talents. He was a very inspiring person and always gave it 100 per cent in what he was doing. Ted enjoyed teaching, writing, especially poems, and had a great love for music, singing the Blues with the bands; "Floor Boards" and "The Classfieds". He enjoyed gardening, fishing and was an avid hunter with his dog "Zoot" and his recently to be trained "Vista". He was a member of the Eastern Fly Way Retriver Club. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by; his wife Geri (Nolan), step-mother Marian Hilfiker, Waverly, Ohio, Sisters; Lois "Fred" Kanter, Boston, Laurie (Paul) Francois, Dassell, Minnesota, Barb (Charles) Zaugg, Clevland, Ohio and Ellen Cronk, Rochester, New York, brothers; David (Marja), Washington, D.C. and David (Ellen) Cronk, Plattsburgh, New York. John Rogers Boylan - 74, Berwick, Kings Co. passed away Wednesday May 2, 2007, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Cremation has taken place. There was no visitation or funeral at John’s request. The family received visitors & shared their memories of John on Saturday May 5, from 1-4 p.m. at the home of John’s daughter, Gail Spicer, 136 Cottage Street, Berwick. Stevens, William Ernest "Bill" - 68, Hantsport, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2007, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, after a five month struggle with reoccurring cancer. Bill was the eldest son of the late Albert "Lad" and Bernice (McClare) Stevens. He was a lifelong resident of Hantsport, retiring from CKF in 2002. In his youth Bill was a member of Ground Observers and RCSC Corps Minas. From a cadet he went on to become a Commanding Officer giving many years of leadership. Bill was a member of St. Andrew‚s Anglican Church, where he shared his talents with the choir as a member, and two terms as director and church organist. He was also a member of Poyntz Lodge No. 44, A.F. & A.M., Hantsport. Bill was a devoted father to Andrew, Sally and Amy; brother to David, Edith (Arthur Parkin), Mary and Robert (Jan Turner); wonderful uncle to several nieces and nephews and Grampie to Jayden. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family received visitors 7-9 p.m. Sunday, May 6, and also where Poyntz Lodge No. 44, A.F. & A.M., Hantsport conducted a tribute service at 7:30 p.m. Cremation followed. TOOLE, Paul Manson - 85, of Wilmot passed away May 3, 2007 in SMH, Middleton. Paul, born April 4, 1922, was the son of the late Alvah and Lois (Allen) Toole of North Kingston. He attended Kingston School, leaving to help support his father and family. During the war years he obtained factory and farm work and later worked to prepare a new runway at CFB Greenwood. When his first wife, Myrtle (Tupper) passed away, leaving him with three young children to raise, he moved into his brother, Morley and Kathleen's home and the two brothers farmed together for many years. A highlight of Paul's life was to accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and to be baptized in Lake George by Rev. Harry Gardiner. He served his church for many years, as a member of the board of trustees and in various other capacities. Paul and second wife, Marguerite operated "Toole's Rest Home" in Wilmot for more than 15 years. One of his aims in life was to see his children educated, happy and healthy. We thank you, Dad. After his marriage to Marion Pigott (Sydow) in 1998, Paul and Marion joined the Board of Directors of Future View TREA (Middleton Railway Station). Paul is survived by and will be sadly missed by his wife, Marion; son Merlyn (Joan) Wilmot; daughters, Helen (Gordon) Rodgers, Middleton; and Shirley Ann Hyrtle (Bertram Shaw) Lawrencetown; stepchildren, Gerald Ryerson (Valerie) Halifax; Gordon Ryerson (Beverly) Yarmouth; Maxwell Ryerson (Patricia) Melvern Sq.; Arthur Ryerson (Gail) Arizona; Sheila Ryerson, Bridgetown; Michael Sydow, Halifax; Jeff Sydow, Middleton and grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Florence Lessard and Ardith Clayton, both of Calgary; brother, Richard (Mary) Kingston; nieces Jean Hughes (Jim) Wilmot; Frances Fleming (Peter) Gananoque, On.; Sylvia Mitchell, Meadowvale; nephew Gordon (Mary) Wilmot.
