April 29, 2007 to May 5, 2007 Melita Belle Kempton — 87, of Northfield passed away Sunday, April 29th, 2007 at home. Born in Maitland Bridge, she was the daughter of the late Everett and Ethel (Kempton) Merry. Melita was very active in the community. She belonged to Maitland Bridge Sewing Circle and enjoyed going to penny auctions, card parties and community suppers as well as cooking and baking for the suppers. She also enjoyed knitting mittens and socks for her family and friends, but above all, going to Gloria’s a couple nights a week to talk. Melita is survived by sons: David (Carrie) Delong of Northfield, Douglas (Pat Stadnyk) Merry of Maitland Bridge, Roger (Mary Jean) Merry of Winnipeg; grandchildren: Linda (Paul) Lambert of Winnipeg, Carla Merry of Winnipeg, Breanna, and Brittany DeLong both of Northfield; great-grandchildren, Rachelle and Eriq Lambert, both of Winnipeg; brother, Mervin of Maitland Bridge; best friend, Gloria Hirtle of Northfield. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph William; sisters Marguerite and Alice; brother, Charles. Funeral service was held Thursday, May 3 at St. Paul’s United Church, Maitland Bridge; Rev. Born April 26, 1920 in Wedgeport, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Alphonsine (Doucette) Boudreau. She was a homemaker. Surviving are her children, Paula (Jim) Smith, Novi, Mich.; Bernard (Joyce) Boudreau, Beaver River; Adeline Boudreau, Yarmouth; Margaret (Tom) Russell, Ancaster, Ont.; grandchildren, Matthew, Jeramy, Adrian, Donnie, Angela, Eugene, Arlin, Charmaine, Darlene & Earl; great-grandchildren, Justin, Brooke, Victoria, David, Eric, Laura, Ryan, Krystal, Joline, Derek, Danielle, Colin, Marcel, Gabrielle, Travis, Brittany, Clark & Ethan; a sister, Emilie LeBlanc, Tidal View Manor, Yarmouth. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Harold Boudreau; brothers, Everett and Leo; sisters, Ella, Grace, Anabelle, Evelyn and Jeanette. Visitation took place from 2-4 & 7-9 Tuesday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Wedgeport. The funeral mass was held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, May 2 from Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, Wedgeport, Msgr. Gerald LeBlanc officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. April 29, 2007 to May 5, 2007 Murray Hutchison Harkness– 88, of Port Williams, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, he was a son of the late Hutchison and Alice (Henderson) Harkness. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served overseas in Northern England and North Africa. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force for 23 years, having been posted across Canada. Upon his retirement from the Armed Forces, he was employed with Food Services at Acadia University for a period of 16 years. Murray was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Dr. C. B. Lumsden Branch 74, Wolfville and an honorary member of the Port Williams Lions Club. He is survived by a daughter, Ruth-Anne (Tom) Stirling, Upper Canard; a son, Thomas, Berwick; two grandsons, Jay (Heather) Billtown and Jeremy (Jennifer) Grand Prairie, Alberta ; two great grandsons, “Young Alex” and “Young Sydney”. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Marjorie Roscoe; a brother, Henderson “Pete” Harkness; three sisters, Ruby Innes, Jean Pekary and Bette Pepper. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2007 with a Royal Canadian Legion service held at 7:00 p.m., both in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2007, Reverend Michael Gibbons officiated. April 29, 2007 to May 5, 2007 LARKIN, Hilbert Irving - 88, Wellington, passed away April 29, 2007. Born December 28, 1918, in Springfield, Mass., he was a son of the late William and Mora (Nickerson) Beverly. Hilbert was a member of Hebron Baptist Church, and also a former member of the church choir. He was known as “The Muffin Man” for the Men's Prayer Breakfast. Hilbert was also a member of the Royal Arch Masonry, and the LampLighters Seniors of Wellington. He was a engineer for General Electric. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by daughter, Cynthia A. (Vern) Hunter, Virginia; sons, Raymond K., Michigan and Bruce D., California; four grandchildren, and one stepgrandchild. Hilbert was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine; brother, Avery; sisters, Gertrude, Laura Jean and one stepgrandchild. Visitation was held Thursday, May 3 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home. Funeral service took place Friday, May 4, at 3 p.m. in Hebron Baptist Church, Rev. Wayne Johnson officiated. April 29, 2007 to May 5, 2007 OGDEN, Donald Leonard “Barney” – 69, Prince Street, Yarmouth, passed away on Monday, April 30, 2007 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born September 18, 1937 n Yarmouth, he was a son of the late James and Marion (Berryman) Ogden. Barney served as a police officer with the Yarmouth Town Police, having trained at police colleges in Regina and Charlottetown. He then worked as an immigration officer with Immigration Canada. In his younger years, he was an excellent boxer with Yarmouth’s Shamrock Boxing Club, and also played baseball. He enjoyed bowling and was an inductee of the Yarmouth County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame. Surviving are his wife, Judith (Lusk) Ogden; children, Willard Lorenzo Ogden, Wood’s Harbour; Christine Ann (Dave) Muise, William Donald “Billy” Ogden, Donna Lee Ogden (Bill Muise), all of Yarmouth; Robert George Ogden, Little River Harbour; grandchildren, Candace, Trent, David Jr., Carmen, William Donald, Corey, Jessie, Shaunna, Judy, Robert Jr., Mattea, Trevor, Trinity; 5 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers, George “Cappy” Ogden, John “Dickie” Ogden, Gordon Ogden, Walter “Ippy” Siscoe, Stanley “Tootsie” Ogden, all of Yarmouth. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son in infancy, James Joseph Ogden; brothers, Tommy Siscoe, Clifford “Whimpy” Ogden; a sister, Pauline “Girlie” Ogden. Visitation took place from 2-4, 7-9 Tuesday, followed by the funeral at 3:00 PM, Wednesday, May 2, all in H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Pastor James Ogden officiated. April 29, 2007 to May 5, 2007 Marie (Coffey) Naylor - Greenwood, passed away peacefully (April 30, 2007), at the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, N.S. after suffering a massive stroke. Born and raised in Toronto and Tottenham, Ontario, she was the second child of the late John and Leila Coffey, and was predeceased by her brother Harry. She was employed for many years as a bookkeeper in the insurance business in Toronto. When she retired in Nova Scotia 12 years ago, she fulfilled a life-long dream of owning property in the countryside. Marie had a deep appreciation for nature and all living things connected to it. She will be remembered by her neighbours, friends and family for being blessed with a gentle touch, a loving nature, an optimistic outlook on life, an upbeat manner and a good sense of humour. Marie will be sadly missed by her loving and devoted husband Harvey, and "adopted" godson Charles Salmon and his wife, Shelley Rowan (Halifax). Marie Naylor is survived by her cousin Sharon Faulkner, whom she lovingly called her little sister, (husband David) and their grown children (Christa and Jason), (Burlington, Ontario), as well as her cousin Don Hutchison and his wife Jean (Toronto), her cousin Margaret, Hanna (Beeton, Ontario) and grown children (Carolyn, John and William) and cousins Jim Hunt, Joanne Hunt and Bill Hunt (Toronto), sister-in-law Joan (George) Funnell and sons Larry, David, Doug and families (Toronto) and brother-in-law Joseph (Jane) Naylor and children Shawn and Myriam (Graham) (PEI). Marie leaves many dear friends in Ontario and Nova Scotia. Her ashes will be laid to rest beside her parents in Beeton, Ontario. A memorial service was held on Thursday May 3, 2007 at 2:00 pm at the Kingston United Church, Kingston, Nova Scotia. A funeral service is also planned for a future date in Ontario. Her husband Harvey wishes to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Marsters, (cardiologist) and the dedicated team of doctors and caring nurses and staff of the Valley Regional Hospital who provided expert care and attended to Marie's medical needs and filled her final days with comfort and dignity. To honour the memory of Marie Naylor and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an animal shelter or a charity of your choice. April 29, 2007 to May 5, 2007 Lucy Emilie Whitman – 92, of New Minas, passed away Monday, April 30, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Dutch Settlement on September 19, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Laurie and Emilie (Schaefer) Isenor. She graduated from the Maritime Business School in 1932 and was employed as a bookkeeper for Austen Brothers. In 1941 she married Fred Whitman and together they had three children. In 1957 they moved from Dartmouth to Bedford to open Whitman’s Hardware Store. In 1982 they retired to the Annapolis Valley and have resided in New Minas. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for over 50 years, beginning with Zeta Chapter and ending with Gamma Master Chapter. Lucy was also a member of the Brightwood Golf and Country Club for many years. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed. She is survived by her husband, Fred; a son, Ron (Gwen); a daughter, Deborah; two grandsons, Ian and Eric; three brothers, Calvin, Neil and Clark; a sister, Beatrice. She was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy; five brothers, Laurie, Alexander, Clifford, Curtis and Theodore; two sisters, Anna and Sylvia. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 3, 2007 in St. James Anglican Church, Kentville, Reverend Catherine Desloges officiating. Born in the United States on March 30, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Archibald and Annie (Williams) Stroud. Mrs. McKay was a war bride. She loved to garden and be in the outdoors. Her family was the love of her life. Mildred was a member of the Milton Improvement Society. She volunteered for the Girl Guides in Yarmouth for many years. She was very active in the community of Yarmouth. Mrs. McKay is survived by daughters, Gail (John) MacDonald, Moncton, N.B.; Shelley McKay (Dave Goguen), Yarmouth; sisters-in-law, Maxine Crowell, Yarmouth; Catherine McKay, Amherst; Joyce Stroud, Ontario; sister, Shirley Fox, England; grandchildren, Kristen (Walter) Dunsford, Summerside, P.E.I.; Michelle MacDonald, Moncton, N.B.; Brett Chipchase, Yarmouth; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard P. McKay and infant daughter, Susan. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. April 29, 2007 to May 5, 2007 Rupert Leo Buckley – 80, formerly of Upper Dyke, Kings County passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 in the Windsor Elms. Born in Greenwich, Connecticut, he was a son of the late Leo and Gladys (Pelton) Buckley. He had been employed at the former Nova Scotia Sanatorium, with Irving Oil Limited and later as a carpenter. He was best known for owning and operating Buckley’s Fly and Tackle Shop. He was an avid sportsman, especially fishing and hunting. He enjoyed listening to Hank Snow and playing the guitar, violin and mouth organ. He was a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville. He is survived by his wife, the former Beatrice Wallace; four daughters, Joan Atwell, Kentville; Shirley (Brian) Keddy, Cambridge; Barbara (Ron) Francis, Sherbrooke Lake; Christine Hudson, New Minas; two sons, David (Dora), Halifax; Kenny, Kentville; a sister, Theresa (David) Young, Kentville; 20 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Brian; two sons-in-law, Larry Atwell and Vernon Schofield; three sisters, Nellie Galbraith, Dorothy Petrine and Mary Roy; three brothers, Nelson, Patrick and Jack; a great granddaughter, Olivia. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 3, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Thelma McLeod officiated. Burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County.
