Barrington Municipal High School students were sent home at 11 a.m. Wednesday after a threat directed towards staff was intercepted by administration.
“We made the decision to release students as a cautionary measure,” said Joe Hazelton communications officer for the Tri-County School Board.
Members of the Barrington Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded to the school after receiving reports that a student may be coming to school with intent to harm. Members and school officials met the student at the bus unloading area and provided escort directly to a secure location where police conducted the investigation.
As a result of the investigation, Barrington RCMP are confident that the initial concerns were unfounded.
The investigation is continuing into the origins of the complaint. There are concerns that a third party or group may have started a rumour, which resulted in the situation.
School was dismissed after a number of parents arrived to gather their children after receiving phone calls and text messages from them. The number of students leaving school prompted officials to cancel classes for the day.
In addition to continuing their investigation, members of the Barrington RCMP are meeting with school staff to debrief the situation and address specific concerns.
Students will return to regular classes on Thursday, May 3. There will be Guidance Councilors available at the school for students to talk to if they wish to do so.
