April 22, 2007 to April 28, 2007 continued Jerry Ronald “Bubby” Reid – 33, of Kentville, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2007 in New Minas. Born in Wolfville, he was a son of Rachel (Stevenson) Stevens, Kentville and Jerry Reid, Canning. He had been employed as a wormer for many years. He enjoyed sports, especially hockey and ball hockey and also loved listening to music. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his step-father, Peter Stevens, Kentville and his step-mother, Cindy Reid, Canning; a son, Nicholas Keddy, Manitoba; three sisters, Angela Reid, Kentville; Shanda and Tasha Reid, both of Canning; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Visitation was held from 7p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 28, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 29, 2007, Reverend Robert Billings officiating. April 22, 2007 to April 28, 2007 continued Marguerite Mae Graves – 80, of Canning, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Wolfville, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Mildred (Spencer) Porter. She had been a homemaker who enjoyed traveling on Kings Transit, doing puzzles, walking, knitting and crocheting. She is survived by three daughters, Carol Graves, Kentville; Lillian (Donald) Sanford, Waterville; Susan (James) Hines, Centreville; five sons, Lawrence (Wendy), Windsor; Richard (Eleanor) and Paul (Debbie), both of Canning; Brian (Christine), Kentville; Michael (Sue), New Minas; a sister, Joyce Lennex, Winnipeg; 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick; a daughter, Edith Wentzell; two brothers, Percy and Alfred. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, April 29, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 30, 2007, Reverend Ray Fisher officiated. April 22, 2007 to April 28, 2007 continued Jerome Leo Kay – 83, of Canaan, Kings Co. passed away Thursday April 26, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Guelph, Ont, he was the son of the late James and Margaret (Miller) Kay. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 17; fought in World War II and the Korean conflict and served 3 years on loan with her Majesty’s Royal Navy in Faselane, Scotland. He retired as Lt. Commander after 25 years of service. Later he spent a number of years with the Halifax - Dartmouth Bridge Commission as General Manager. He was a member of the Valley Cursillo Movement. He was a great story teller and loved to entertain children with his tales. Speaking with him for a short time, would soon show you how much he loved his grandchildren. He loved life at his cottage and to go fishing and hunting with his son-in-law, Dave. Every year, he and his late wife, Mim had looked forward to going south with Gord and Sylvia Lothian and their endless games of bridge. Surviving is his daughter, Paula (David) Hasler, Canaan; granddaughter, Shannon (Mark) Eastman, Canaan; grandson, Ryan, Canaan; sisters: Dorothy Fallie, Val Herbert, Mary Gould and Lucille Burleigh all of Ontario. He was predeceased by his wife and soul mate of 59 years, Miriam "Mim"; brothers; Jim and Bill; sister, Margaret. There was no visitation by family request. Funeral service was held, Monday at 11:00 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Kentville. Father Craig Christensen officiated. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. Following the burial, a reception was held in the church hall. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Jerry’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or to the Last Post Fund.. April 22, 2007 to April 28, 2007 continued Joseph “Joe” Daigle Leonard - passed away Friday April 27, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Jacquet River, N.B. in 1933 he was the son of the late J. Clement & Mary (Matthews) Daigle. Surviving are his wife Alice (Arenburg), Son David (Kim) White Rock, Kings Co., Grandsons Thomas, Chad, Zackery. Brothers Trueman, Riverview N.B., Aubrey, Duncan B.C. , Sister Carolyn (Ron) Gaudet, Riverview N.B., Sister in law Mary, St. Stephen N.B. and Helen, Dieppe N.B. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his beloved daughter Sherrie Ann Banks in May 2005, Brothers Clement Jr. and Earl. Cremation has taken place and in keeping with Joe’s wishes there was no funeral service. Private burial will be held at a later date. April 22, 2007 to April 28, 2007 continued Gary Allen “Bubby” Buckley – 57, of Kingston, passed away on Friday, April 27, 2007 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Kentville, he was a son of Margaret (Swinamar) Mitchell, Kingston and the late Nelson Buckley. In the past he had been an avid volunteer at the Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre in Waterville for many years and was a well-liked member of the Kingston community. In addition to his mother, he is survived by three sisters, Deanna Buckley, Moncton; Betty (Blair) Barry, Spryfield; Margaret (Darren) Hennessey, Kingston; three brothers, Jack (Gail) Buckley and William (Rhonda) Mitchell, both of Spryfield; Timothy (Kathy) Mitchell, Coldbrook; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his step-father, George Mitchell. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. April 22, 2007 to April 28, 2007 continued CAPT. LEONARD HADLEY EARLE - 83, of Houston, Texas passed away on Monday, April 23, 2007 while visiting family in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was respected and loved by all who knew him, and he was a friend to all he met. He will be missed by those whose lives he touched. Capt. Earle was preceded in death by his father, Leonard H. Earle and his mother, Elsie Ann Sutherland Earle. He is survived by Charlotte Deming Earle, his loving wife of 62 years, and his three children and their spouses; Dr. David and Martha Earle of Austin, Texas, Douglas and Ellen Earle, of Sugar Land, Texas, and Christine and David Siegel, of Ellicott City, Maryland; granddaughters Rebecca Smith, Katharine Wilson, Courtney Siegel, Sara Siegel, Hayley Siegel, Ida Earle, and Kara Earle; and also by his brother, Dr. John Earl and wife, Eleanor; his sister, Barbara Hunter and husband Eugene; and his sister Dr. Brooke Sheldon. He was born March 24, 1924 in Medford, Massachusetts, and later moved to Nova Scotia where he graduated from Yarmouth academy. In February 1941, at the age of 16, he began 13 years of service in the Merchant Marine as a member of the crew of the SS John D. Archbold, a tanker in the Standard Oil of New Jersey fleet. During World War II, the War Shipping Administration assumed control of much of the American Merchant Marine fleet, and Mr. Earle served his country as a Merchant Marine in several war zones. In 1944, his ship, the SS E.G. Seubert was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Aden. Mr. Earl survived and continued his service for the remainder of the war. In 1946, at the age of 24 he obtained his Master Mariner's License and became the youngest captain in the history of the Standard Oil fleet. He maintained this license for the remainder of his life. In 1954, Capt. Earle completed his service at sea and enrolled in the University of Connecticut where he was named to Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated in 1957 as a Distinguished Scholar with a degree in Economics. Upon graduation he continued his career in Standard Oil of New Jersey's Marine Department where he held a variety of positions including; Labor Relations Officer, Chief of Ocean Operations, Chief of Inland Waterway Operations, and Port Captain for Houston. Throughout his life Capt. Earl demonstrated dedication and commitment to Christian service. He was a devoted member of St. John's Presbyterian Church for 46 years where he served as an elder and member of numerous committees. He also was active in supporting the ministry of the Seafarers Center at the Port of Houston and he was instrumental in organizing the Braes Interfaith Ministry (BIM) where he volunteered faithfully in its vegetable and produce garden for many years. Worship service that celebrated the life of Capt. Earle was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2007 at St. John's Presbyterian Church, 5020 W. Bellfort, Houston, TX 77035. Memorials may be made to the ministry of the Seafarer's Center, the Braes Interfaith Ministry, or the St. John's Memorial Fund all in care of St. John's Presbyterian Church, 5020 W. April 22, 2007 to April 28, 2007 continued DONOFRIO, Gail (Walker) - Mississauga, Ontario, formerly of Windsor, Nova Scotia passed away April 23, 2007. Gail was born and raised in Windsor, the daughter of the late William (Billie) and Vi Walker. She was a graduate of the Windsor Academy and the Windsor School of Business. Gail was the beloved wife of Marcellio (Marc) for 25 years, dear stepmother of Phillip Donofrio and the late Mary Lynn Hughes, and the cherished grandmother of Amy, Taylor, Desmond and Madeline. She was the much loved aunt of Kathy and Keith, Peter and Mary, Richard and Sue Thompson. Gail was also predeceased by her sister Helen and will be sadly missed by her brother-in-law Gordon Thompson. Gail will also be greatly missed by family and friends in Nova Scotia. April 22, 2007 to April 28, 2007 continued CLARKE, Earl Franklin - 73, Lower Sackville, died suddenly at home, Thursday, April 26, 2007. Born in Annapolis Royal, Earl was the son of the late Frank and Rhea (Guest) Clarke. Earl grew up in Dartmouth and Eastern Passage. He is survived by his wife, Pauline (Wamboldt), who he married in 1954, as well as sons Terry and Bruce (Virginia); grandchildren Matthew, Jennifer and Heather, and great-granddaughter Rheanna, all of Lower Sackville; brothers, John (Sheila), Edmonton, Alta., Murray (Sandra), Miramichi, N.B., Eric (Jean), Nictaux, NS and sister Dianne (Alan) Brady, Dartmouth, as well as several nieces and nephews. Earl retired from the Royal Canadian Air Force after 35 years of service, serving in St. Jean, Borden, Greenwood, Gimli, Baden-Soellingen, Summerside, Cold Lake, Trenton and Halifax. He was employed with IMP for 10 years. He was a proud member of the Boy Scout movement for more than 50 years, serving as a leader and on district and regional council. He was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters serving at the local and regional levels, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Calais Branch 162, and was involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Earl was a member of St. Francis by the Lakes Anglican Church, First Lake, Lower Sackville, where the funeral took place on Tuesday, May 1, Rev. Mark Kingsbury officiated. Interment in Fernwood Memorial Park, 1800 Sackville Dr. A reception followed the interment at the Royal Canadian Legion, Calais Branch 162. April 22, 2007 to April 28, 2007 continued Harry Cleveland Freeman — 82, passed away peacefully at home on April 27, 2007, following a battle with leukemia. Born in Greenfield, he was the elder son of the late Harry and Leda (Wile) Freeman. He received his early education from the one-room school in Greenfield. He then answered the call of his country and at the age of 17, joined the RCAF (serving from 1942 to 1945). With unusual aptitude for all things mechanical, he won his class gold medal as aero engine mechanic and was promoted to crew chief at only 19 years of age. When discharged from the RCAF, he enrolled at Acadia University where he achieved his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees. He worked 35 years as a Government of Canada research scientist in Halifax and was bestowed the honour of Scientist Emeritus. He authored, co-authored and refereed countless papers in leading scientific journals and pioneered many laboratory techniques still used today, including sublethal testing on fish while others focused only on the lethal effects of pollutants. His research concerning the impact of acid rain on Atlantic salmon is internationally recognized. In 1985, he was awarded the Government of Canada Award for Long and Efficient Service. He lived and breathed the Forest Industry all his life with his family and his partner, Harry Freeman Sr. They incorporated in 1975 as Harry Freeman & Son Ltd. Actively involved in industry associations, he was a director of the Forest Products Association of Nova Scotia, Maritime Lumber Bureau and Independent Sawmill Association. He was a member of the Wildlife Advisory Council for the Minister of Natural Resources. He held offices in numerous volunteer organizations — many of these reflected his life-long interest in sport, environment and the outdoors. He chaired the Building Committee and led the effort, which built the Greenfield Recreation Centre and the Greenfield United Baptist Church. He was driven to provide recreation and other facilities for the young and old of the Greenfield area. He was an active member of the Greenfield Recreation Association, Greenfield United Baptist Church, Greenfield & District Fire Department, Royal Canadian Legion and Jolly Ponoquers Senior’s Club. He leaves to mourn, his wife of 60 years, Elfreda (Slauenwhite); sons, Charlie (Linda) Freeman and Richard (Annette) Freeman, all of Greenfield; daughters, Charalyn (Jerry) Kriz of Whistler, BC, Heather (Sam) Arthur of Surrey, BC, and Marianne (George) Morrison of Fall River; 12 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; four chosen grandsons; sister, Alean Freeman; and brother, Walter Freeman. He was predeceased by sister, Roxie Freeman; brother, Richard Freeman in infancy; and infant grandson, Craig Freeman. A celebration of his life was held Thursday, May 3 in the Greenfield United Baptist Church; Pastor Dennis Nickerson officiated. A reception followed. Memorial donations may be given to the First Settler’s Place Society or the Greenfield Recreation Association.
