Girls who participated in an after-school teen fitness class at Liverpool Regional High School had an opportunity to get a full body workout.

“I think I’m in better shape than I was when I started,” said student Sarah Mason.

Marcia Pierce Harding, who has 30 years of training, taught the class this past fall.

Harding’s goal is to share the knowledge she gained from training sessions with Dancefit Canada, YMCA and others over the years.

Sponsored by the Queens Community Health Board, Harding said the class exercises help with flexibility, coordination, cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength.

They move and dance to various types of music. “The girls can perform these basic exercises throughout their lives,” said Harding.

She noted studies show regular exercise not only promotes good physical and mental health, it helps foster a positive self image as well.

School principal Terry Doucette purchased equipment for the class, said Harding. “It’s fun and it’s good exercise,” added Mason.

This “pilot project” wrapped up on Dec. 20.

Harding hopes to offer another program in the New Year.
