Acadia women’s basketball has added another piece to its puzzle.
Kristy Moore has committed to attend Acadia and play for the Axewomen next fall.
Moore, a native of Shad Bay, is currently in Grade 12 at Halifax West High School, an honours student in the International Baccalaureate program as well as a talented basketball player.
Moore had been heavily recruited by schools across Canada, but has determined Acadia and the Axewomen are the best fit for her to fulfill her academic, athletic and personal goals.
“I like the coaching staff and the girls on the team,” Moore said in a Dec. 4 release. “I’ve watched (the Axewomen) improve over the season, and I think I can learn a lot from the coaches.”
Acadia, she suggests, “is a good distance away for me; it’s close enough that I can go home to see my family when I want to, but far enough away to get the full college experience.
“It wasn’t hard to sell me on Acadia: it’s a great university, and I’m very happy with my choice.”
Moore has had numerous highlights in her basketball career, including being part of the Basketball Nova Scotia provincial U-15 and U-17 teams and representing Nova Scotia at the 2009 Canada Games, where she served as team captain and was Nova Scotia’s leading scorer.
She is arguably best known for scoring. She broke former CIS national Player of the Year Joanne Wells’ Nova Scotia high school record for points in a game with 56 in last year’s NSSAF provincial qualifiers. She averaged 32.4 points per game for Halifax West in 2008/ 2009, with five games of 40-plus points and 15 games in which she scored 30 or more; and led her team to NSSAF D-1 girls’ provincials.
Axewomen head coach Bev Greenlaw expects Moore to have an immediate impact.
“Not only is Kristy a great team leader, she will also bring additional quickness, athleticism and scoring to a young team,” he says.
“She gives the Axewomen an immediate long-range scoring threat, and adds to our perimeter quickness on defense.”
Greenlaw adds, “our current freshman and sophomore classes are developing nicely, and we’re hoping Kristy’s decision to join our program may help influence other outstanding student-athletes to seriously consider Acadia for their own academic, basketball and personal dreams.”
