Tourism champion retires

A longtime manager and champion of the tourism industry in Queens Co. is retiring after 30 years at White Point Beach Resort.

Having been part of White Point for 31 years, Fawthrop admits White Point is and will continue to be a part of his family. "Over the years, as the Managing Director, I've had the privilege of working with some of the most amazing people in the hospitality industry. The respect, commitment and dedication of our team at White Point and the support we enjoy within our community is the envy of many," says Fawthrop. In a press release from White Point, they said Fawthrop’s presence will be missed at the resort. “As Mr. Fawthrop turns the page to write a new chapter in his career and life journey, he leaves the Resort and related companies on solid ground and in good hands. The philosophy of continuously reaching beyond, to be bold, dynamic, creative and innovative is one that has transcended through the years and will continue at White Point Beach Resort.”

In his time at White Point, the resort went from a seasonal operation to a year round business under Fawthrop, now is one of the largest employers in Queens Co.

He also started the only international time-share east of Montreal, which draws in tourists from around the world to White Point.

Fawthrop was very active in the promotion of tourism, and was one of the instrumental founders of Destination South West.

He’s also been active with South Shore Tourism Association, Hotel Association of NS and one of the founders of the Nova Scotia Tourism Partnership Council, which is a partnership between the tourism industry and the province of Nova Scotia.

In council on Oct. 19, Mayor John Leefe said Fawthrop’s contribution to tourism in Queens Co., the South Shore and of Canada has been immense. Council voted to send a letter of recognition from the Region of Queens for his work.
