Peter Millman and Chelsea Whalen made it close, but Andrew MacDonald held off his two closest competitors to capture the 2009 Field of Dreams throwing series June 20 in Port Williams.

Needing to throw 13.56 metres in the shot put to clinch the overall series title, MacDonald responded to the challenge with a 13.92 result to claim victory.

MacDonald, a Bridgewater native and Launchers Athletics member, finished with 2,476 points for top finishes over the four meets of the series.

Millman was second overall with 2,385. Whalen placed third at 2,317, with Garrett Ramey fourth (2,299) and Nathan Burris fifth (2,026).

At the June 20 event, the fourth and final meet of the series, competition took place in shot put, discus, javelin and hammer throw.

Sarah Millman won the bantam girls’ discus with a throw of 24.71 metres.

Drew Erskine won the bantam boys’ with a new provincial record of 32.74.

Kayla Gallagher won the midget girls’ discus, Peter Millman the midget boys, Whalen the juvenile girls, Cameron MacLennan the juvenile boys, Nicole Larade the senior women and Seth London the senior men.

In shot put, Sarah Millman won the bantam girls, Erskine the bantam boys, Mariele Guerrero the midget girls, Peter Millman the midget boys, Whalen the juvenile girls, MacDonald the juvenile boys, Geoff Myatt the junior boys, Larade the senior girls and Myatt the senior boys.

In javelin, the smallest of the four competitions with just two divisions, Mallory Taylor won in midget girls and Whalen in juvenile girls.

In the hammer throw, Sarah Millman won in bantam girls, Erskine in bantam boys, Gallagher in midget girls, Peter Millman in midget boys, Kayli Gault in juvenile girls and Burris in juvenile boys.

In related news, Launchers head coach Steve Wohlmuth learned following the meet that Liverpool native and Launchers member Chelsea Whalen had been selected to the Canadian Youth (U-17) Track and Field Team.

Whalen, 16, will represent Canada in women’s shot put and javelin at the IAAF World Youth Championships July 8-12 in Bressanone, Italy. She is also scheduled to compete for Nova Scotia at the Canadian senior track and field championships this weekend in Toronto.
